  • Young Diego is all over the sports news now.....and you can bet your life we're gonna lose him for peanuts. It's the Charlton way after all :/

... why on earth did Diego Poyett not get an opportunity until Dale Stephens was sold?

that does seem a very good question.

because there is a clause in Poyet's contract that his wages go up by 400% after a small number of games.

So under Jimenez we couldn't afford to play him. Under Roland we can.
So does his contract also have that if he passes this mark, he get an extension to his contract?
    Seems daft not to.

If Diego has any sense of loyalty towards the club who nurtured him through his early years as a potential professional footballer, he will sign a new contract. If he decides to leave, it will be for the wrong reasons, IMO.

I understand that and also saw somewhere that Powell said Stephens could go at some point last year. But in the bigger picture relegation is far more expensive than a youth player contract converting to a senior squad level. Are you suggesting they were that skint or perhaps they were that sure of selling and didn't care?

Perhaps they were distressed sellers but their neglect of the squad since the summer including this element has surely cost them millions.

Also under Duchatelet we were able to sell Stephens for £700K to Brighton and not feel the difference in midfield at least.

£700,000 for Stephens ? £400,000 for KMG. FA Cup run. I can see the books are balancing.
Yep...throw in £1.4M if we had beaten Sheffield United and we were looking at the smallest loss since 2008!
Success at this level pays and I really hope Duchatelet invests in the right calibre of player over the summer to prove this. I actually don't care where they come from and think perhaps good signings might convince Poyet and other prospects to sign up.

The wrong reasons? He's got the opportunity to play at some of the greatest clubs in the world. It's not just the money talking.

Being brought through the Barcelona academy will do far more for him than a season in the Championship.

Obviously it'll be wonderful if he signs a new deal with us, but with the caliber of teams coming in for him, I honestly cannot see a situation where he'd rationally choose us over them.
  • sign a new three year deal with a 3m get out clause. if someone wants him that much they will pay it and at least we get a half decent fee, well better than the 400k we will get if he joins a PL club or zilch if he goes to Barca.
  • Thanks Henry, bit of a counter-productive clause from his agent!
Fingers & toes crossed Diego signs up in the summer.
  • He's waiting to sign it along with Shaun Wright Phillips and the other "confirmed" signings them lot said was happening.
  • If Barcelona came in for me with a free transfer of my North Upper season ticket to one at the Nou Camp I'd do it. I can't think of a single reason why Diego wouldn't go there, I just hope he signs a deal before he does so we can get a half decent fee.

  • What I can't understand is why his contract wasn't extended when he first started showing potential and broke into the the 1st team?
Now he's showing real potential and the rumors that the like of barca are interested
You know we will get shafted and end up minus the player and only receive minimal tribunal youth fees?
Just why no one saw this coming I don't know?

He turned down an extension... Seriously, this has been mentioned in every page of every poyet contract thread :). You just need to read what people posted before you.
  • Yeh but if they claiming he turned it down and wasn't interested why are they now claiming to be sorting a deal out unless there prepaired to offer mega £££ now to keep the lad? What changed? Unless he didnt like playing for powell?

End of season was mentioned, I presume after safety etc. 'They' may be trying on a deal, but im guessing he will stick to his work. Poyet is the only player to publicly praise CP so I very much doubt, him leaving will help get a contract signed quicker.

  • Hardly surprising they may be offering a better deal, given a) he has to an extent proved himself and b) we have new owners with deeper pockets and a longer term outlook!
  • Desperately hope he stays, but you can't blame him too much if he has the likes of Barca and Arsenal sniffing around, it's good for him and at the end of the day he's got a limited shelf-life in this business. Really, really hope he signs tho lol
  • If he signs a new contract I would guess he'll become our best paid player.

The question of why he wasn't allowed to play until Stephens did one is interesting.
  • He'd be mad to stay - in a different league to the rest of our team.
  • I thought he was the best player on the pitch today. Better than anyone Burnley have, never mind us. Maybe we can negotiate one of those sale and loan back deals. The best we can hope for I would guess.

  • MOM again, real classy player.
  • Staying in the Championship and Poyet staying at Charlton would convince me to renew my season ticket.
  • Six more home games this season. I will miss one. I calculate that I have five more chances to see Diego in a Charlton shirt. He will be long gone by the start of next season.
  • Excellent today now that he's getting a bit more freedom to play the ball forwards. I'd love to see him play further forward in a number ten role. His passes to Church and Obika were superb. I could have cried when Riga replaced him with Sordell. What a bizarre decision.

I'm not s sure if the timings work out but didn't someone earlier say that if he played x amount of games it triggered an increase In money? If so do the timings work out that Powell only started using him after Tj and Ms left? Ie: he was told not to use him before then by tj, but free to pick him when Douchbag came in.

  • Been told he's not going to sign.

To be fair even allowing for your one missed home game you still have eleven "chances to see Diego in a Charlton shirt" - you're just choosing not to take them !

    :-)
  • I have been told that he "can't get wait to get away." Obviously hope it's nonsense.
  • Some idea of sources from CAFC & Red Robin would be good. It would be very sad not to see him stay and play.
