Is RD going to invest heavily in the summer if we stay up? (Genuine question, think I've missed this being talked about).

Cawley at the SLP has hinted that we will (via Twitter). I know some don't rate his (Cawley's) posts, but lately he's generally been on the mark

  • How do we let good quality young players enter the final year of their contract? Even before they reach the first team we must know they're quality.
  • How do you know it was the club? Poyet may have not wanted a longer deal. Look at Ajayi, different in that he wanted a longer deal, but he thought he could do better and got a 2 year deal at Arsenal.

By not signing a longer deal he keeps his options open. If he's here on a long term deal he'll only go to a club that can afford to pay a decent fee. As it stands clubs will only have to pay compensation of a few hundred thousand for him.

I know many have decided we have no chance of keeping him, but if he does stay he won't want to be playing in League 1. I won't completely write off him signing a new deal after the season has finished if we stay up. Still hopeful we'll get at least another season out of him. With the right signings he could be a key player in a team in and around the playoffs.
  • If we do stay up, then surely he would be crazy not to sign a contract - if he were to go to a Premiership club, then he would more than likely be in the reserves or even loaned back to a Championship club, so what would be the good of that?

Better to play for a Championship club that he knows and where he is clearly well liked.

At the moment he is a talented young player, but unlikely to break into a Premiership team, so why not give it a year to see if he could get there with his first club?

My guess is about £10,000 a week. I know it shouldn't be all about the money but if he signs a four deal deal with a top side and then gets loaned back to the Championship he will be playing at the same level with a much bigger wage, access to the resources that his parent club have, that few Championship clubs have, and he is guaranteed the higher wages for the length of the contract - irrespective as to what happens with his form, injuries etc.

If we were to offer him a small fortune on a long term contract with a guaranteed sell on fee written in, then I can see how it might work, but I think he is good enough to command the kind of wages that we just can't justify.
  • realistically we'd get 1 more full season out of him at a push (yes he's that good) so hopefully (and assuming we stay up) he signs a 3 yr deal with a gentlemans agreement to go for a decent price at the end of next season....or he's sold in the summer on the proviso he's back with us on a season long loan next year
  • I think its nailed on he will join Sunderland if and when they are relegated, gets to still play in the champ and gets to play under his Dad. Will probably sign for them on a 12 month contract so he could leave if his dad gets the sack.

If it was me and I was his age I would love to play for my Dad in a league where I could win the league. So I would chose that over staying.

    Just a thought
  • But then his father doesn't stack shelves in Tesco or work on a building site, so shouldn't be swayed by the short term financial rewards that have made other young players "do a Bostock".
His father is a rich former footballer and current manager, he can afford to play the long game, and can plan next season based on footballing reasons. Staying in the Championship, playing regular passing football on a lush outfield against decent opposition will be attractive, whereas 3rd Division hoofball won't help him.
  • He needs a haircut

  • I think both he and his dad have indicated this is not what they want.

Dowie wanted to move up north to be with his family. Don't always believe what footballers say

Yeah, fathers and sons eh? Personally I'd have rather poked my eyes out with a sharp stick than work with my Dad. It was difficult enough just having him do some practice sessions for my driving test for a few hours let alone taking orders from him 24/7 - nightmare!
  • can have done the contract possibility no harm having RD at the match last night
  • all the cards are with him, hopefully it will be :

stay with us at treble his money for another couple of seasons with a get out clause if a prem team comes in with an offer over 3/5 million------possible transfer to Sub Standard Liege and games in the Champs league.

  • Sunderland have Bridcutt who plays a very similar role to Poyet. I can't see him going there to be honest. Diego and Gus have both spoken separately about proving himself away from his dad's shadow.
  • The ideal situation is that he is just waiting for us to confirm safety, as surely he does not need an extra few grand a week as he already comes from a rich family thanks to his dad's success.

He needs to be playing football, stay here where he is now one of the guaranteed starters, as no matter how good he is, your always running the risk of it not quite working at another club and the last thing he needs is his career stalling by being lost in some rich clubs huge youth setup.

Hopefully we can come to an agreement maybe with a so many millions release clause, so he always has the option of making the move if one of the rich clubs is serious rather then just looking to take a punt on another young player they can steal for a pittance.

We really can't blame Diego for waiting to see what division we will be playing in next season, and possibly whether Riga will get the head coach role longer term. If we stay up and Riga stays (and Diego like him) then hopefully he will sign up for a couple of years - with a minimum release/Prem club clause that gives him a hefty slice of the fee. Everyone wins then.

  • why should he sign now as he won't know in which division the team will play, who the manager will be or the future plans for the club.
  • Think Shelvey signed up so we could make a fee out of loyalty totheteamthat bought him up, I would hope Poyet does the same.

I hope so too, young Diego did seem a bit disillusioned in the immediate Post-Powell fallout (like most of us) but I reckon he'll do right by the club and the academy who taught him so well. To be honest I would be okay with selling he OR Cousins as long as we kept hold of the other for another year or two, losing both at once would be heartbreaking. And whatever faults he may have I don't think RD would happily see two excellent prospects go cheap if he could help it!
  • We've had him since he was a kid so in an ideal world he would do a shelvey! Show some loyalty to the club that made him. Its called pay back!

I think it would show a bit of class from Diego if he signs a new contract on significantly more money with a 5 million release clause, and if he's as good as we keep saying he is he's going to end up playing Champions League football a lot quicker with a move to Standard Liege, than he is playing in England, where he'd be wasted.

Also a la Owen Hargreaves, playing in another league shows you've got transferable ability, then coming back here shows your a more complete person and player, go on Diego , sign up son!

Personallly I am a little miffed he hasn't signed a contract. I'm led to believe he has had a couple of offers - one of which was very generous. Surely he owes it to us - the club that has guided and coached him since he was 9. If he wants to go that's one thing - we get a fee and everyone is a winner. If he stays he gets regular 1st team football, a tidy wage for a 19 year old and we would get a fee if someone came in for him.
As people have said it's not as if his family are on the breadline

I understand his father is also his agent (i may be wrong on that) so again there is no point in him dictating that he move just for a quick buck.

As I see it he could easily be in the premier league within 18 months - just put pen top paper now and concentrate on the run-in

He owes us as much as we owe the kids who joined us at 9, whose dreams we built and then along the way we discarded. It's a business on both sides. He owes us nothing.

  • Those kids have quite a lot of money invested in them and are given every opportunity to succeed though so I don't think it is quite as sip less that Kap10, but then I have a certain bias!

I think he does owe the club something - yes it is his talent that has got him where he is, but the club has supported it. I think he will sign a contract - the big thing has to be what division we are playing in - if we are in League one, I fully understand him being reluctant. That prospect became a lot less likely after Tuesday and apart form loyalty - which should be a factor absolutely - He is probably the first name on our team sheet, he is impressing and being allowed to play his game and develop further - why risk that, he is at the perfect club in terms of selling him when he is ready.

I would always advise a player of Poyet's quality, that another season at Charlton will enhance his reputation - so he won't go to a club taking a punt, but a club who really wants and needs him, a Premiership club where he will walk into the team. That is more likely to happen if he continues his stable path with us.

Another scenario is that he and Cousins will flourish with experience- Charlton strengthen and we get promoted - he could then enhance his career with a season in the premiership with us, in teh knowledge that that big club will bite.

This could happen if he leaves, but there is more of a risk. If he goes to a bigger club, he may not get in the team - then he has to go on loan somewhere and that is always a risk. The reason he will sign is that it is the best decision for him as well as the club. I think he will get an improved offer when we are safe - probably as much as we can afford and he'll take it.

And we are talking about one season, when he will be 20 or 2 when he will be 21. No age at all.
  • We demand loyalty from players but never provide it back to players of any age, it would be nice to have the jenkinsons and poyets to sign up but clubs have little loyalty to players and despite sterling service as youngsters or maturing players will discard them as necessary for instance kinsella and kiely both of whom stated they did not want to be moved on. Poyet could easily develop with another championship club via a season long loan from a premiership club and if he wants to do that he has the power to include that in his contract negotiations. I hope he does stay but again I say he owes us nothing as we owe him nothing.
