  • Exactly what top players do we have that would stroll into Standard Liege's team right now ?

We've seen though movement already within the group of players that have not strolled into our first team, so i wouldn't rule out the same thing happening in the other direction. Of course, it doesn't really make sense, but a lot that has happened so far hasn't really made sense to me !

I think it will be very interesting what the summer strategy will be and whether it differs what division we are in. Certainly the efforts to try and secure Championship status have so far been limp at best.

You are right AFKA, it has been half-hearted at best with absolutely no urgency at all. I really don't think that RD will be that bothered if we do get relegated; he is more focused on his long-term plan rather than worrying too much about this season.
  • Stephens has been replaced with Ajdarevic and Poyet...Hamer is back...and Kermorgant wanted a longer, bigger deal to stay. We have signed one striker on loan.
Not really Rd signing loans though is it? A mix of Powell, Prothero Murray and Miere? We will know over next couple of days whether we sign someone in time for the cup.
I am glad we have someone with funds and vision looking at long term plan...about time! And I think Powell has the squad to deliver something this month...we will know over the next two weeks... Obviously easier if he gets a couple of bodies in.
The summer strategy is going to set the tone for the whole Duchatelet era - let's hope he is ambitious as the fans.
  • strange how this "we will know when--in etc" seems to be getting pushed further and further into the season ? It has been:

"lets wait till we get new owners"
" They have only been here a week---a month ---two months"
"lets wait until the end of the transfer window"
"lets wait until the end of the loan window"

    blah blah blah

the is one thing for CERTAIN we will all know if RDs brinkmanship has worked at the end of the season-----and what ever division we are then going to play in,

Seems there are some legs on the story. Can't see the interview from work. It is probably a good thing as it looks as from the trail it might upset my lunch. The trail suggests as though they are saying RD wants Charlton supporters to accept that RD will asset strip the best players from the club. I hope I am wrong.

am personally disappointed that more players haven't come in, and those that left, not necessarily with the ones that have come in. It's looking like a long term thing, nevertheless whatever the new owner inherited he had the opportunity to correct the course of the ship and so far in my opinion hasn't managed to, but as GH says we won't know that til towards the end of the season. Bottom line is goals win matches, we seem to be creating more somehow, although I feel we still lack a lot in the department in terms of quality and pace, we need to get them in the net..

    I take your point...
We will know in a couple of days whether we have signed anyone to assist making it to Wembley.
And we will know by results and performances at 5pm on the 15th March whether we can climb out of bottom three.
I am confident we can based on what I saw of the two recent wins but I respect those who are worried and who want to see more players coming in.

Duchatelet's network of clubs breaks no Fifa or Uefa rules, but if two of his clubs were to qualify for European competition only one would be allowed to compete.

Sorry Standard, FA Cup glory means we are taking that spot.

  • I didnt like what RD was saying in that video clip

Yes, I saw that and was worried more about this* than players going (which if we're honest we all expect to happen anyway).
Anyone know if this applies to both European competitions or they are treated separately.

    * For the future of course, though we can all hope.

  • The interesting bit in the piece to me alluded to the amount of money that would come from the Premiership, also consider RDs 'proven' strategy at Liege - value upcoming and young players, doesn't really fit with the comment does it. The problem overall will be keeping fans of different clubs happy, I suppose you lower expectations enough then if success comes..
  • Last week there were rumours of someone wanting to takeover Liege. We are unlikely to get any players good enough for the Champions League playing in League One or Championship. Only in the Prem could we attract that sort of quality and then the rewards for staying in the PL will be so high sending a player to Liege wouldn't make much sense

    Qualification for European competitions[edit]

For the 2010-11 season, the Belgian champion and the runner-up qualify for the 3rd UEFA Champions League qualifying round (of 4).[2] The Belgian Cup winner (or the Cup finalist if the Cup winner finished first or second in the league) qualifies for the play-off of the UEFA Europa League. The third-placed team (or the fourth-placed team if the Cup winner finished 3rd in the league) qualifies for the 3rd and last qualifying round and the winner of the game between the play-offs 2 winner and the fourth-placed team (or the fifth-placed team if the Cup winner finished fourth) qualifies for the 2nd qualifying round.[3]

Unfortunately I think they are treated as one, because of the fact that UCL group stage 3rd place teams end up in the Europa League
  • I really wouldn't worry too much.

At the end of the day, we can't hold on to players that are nowhere near Sandard Liege level. Stephens and Kermorgant certainly weren't and we couldn't stop other clubs taking them. I don't see there ever being a scenario where a good Charlton player goes to Liege that wouldn't have gone to another club anyway. At least this way we should get some players who aren't quite Liege level but are decent at Championship level in return, I.e Ajdarevic.

Well we have this situation and we have to make it work for us. That is what I took from the interview - that it is down to the management here - but RD is not going to throw money at the project. If Dave the pole turns out to be a success - I'm sure he will be off to SL. But it may mean we get more young hungry players. If we were to get promoted to the premiership, we would find ourselves at the top of the pyramid. As it stands, SL will be looking at our best players and we will be looking at their reserves and the best players of the other clubs.

Can see our pre-season friendly against SL having quite an edge to it!

Totally agree. We may also benefit from Charlton looking more attractive to potential academy youngsters with the prospect of playing for S.L. and Charlton.
  • This sounds like an angle to me. I'm pretty sure I recall RD making a comment in the interview that we would have to accept our better players would have to be sold to balance the books. That's nothing new and we've been a selling club as long as I've been a supporter. Now throw in the network bit and you get the angle.

It's nothing new, it changes nothing - except as RM suggested we might actually get fair value for our players. Assuming we've got them signed on contracts, of course...
  • My only concern with all of this is the fact RD will not only be the buyer, he is the seller as well. Whilst I understand we will always be a selling club it is nice to have a small crumb of comfort knowing when a club comes sniffing we can refuse the first offer in the hope they will go away, think about it and come back with a bigger offer.

This is not going to happen the way things are. Player X will be sold to SL at a price RD knows will balance both sets of books and it will be recorded as "undisclosed fee".

For all we know he could sell Solly to SL for a lot less than what we would get from a Prem club however it is a win, win for RD as SL do not pay a lot for the player whilst Charlton get a fee plus a reduction in wages etc which shows a saving.

The interview reads as very positive for me:

-He mentions that there is the possibility of our best players going to Liege, which is fair enough - we are essentially a feeder club and Liege is big enough to be a parent club for us.
-We will benefit from loans in, as evident by Astrit and co. coming in this year.
-RD wont force anything, eg. by pumping money into one of the clubs or completely stripping all assets into a single club.
-If we venture into the EPL, we could shift to become the priority. That would obviously be more lucrative than Liege in the Champions League.
-He will aim to break even and make profits at all clubs.

I would be more worried if I was the Hungarian, Spanish or German club! Even Liege fans are unhappy that we may become the priority...

We obviously sold Kerm and Dale to balance the cheque book. Really interested to be part of this project.
  • Surely a player has to agree personal terms before they move? They can try and sell Cousins or Poyet to Liege, but if the player doesn't want to move then surely the transfer can't go ahead?

Yes we have really benefited from the loans in so far haven't we, Astrit & co have made a big difference?
  • so players will be bid on by other clubs... hmm really, where is the value in that for the network? I guess they could be swap deals..
  • So if we win the FA Cup we don't get into Europe next year if Liege are in the Champions league. That's nice!

I didn't take to RD after this interview as well as I did after the last one. Despite all the guff about treating your kids equally, it is very obvious from this and from what the Liege coach guy said that we are second in the priority list and a feeder club for Liege. Our incoming transfers/loans are more than likely to be Liege second-raters. I can live with the theory - and in some cases its a whole lot more secure than having a nutter in charge who will splash the cash and bankrupt us - but just wait till Poyet has a blinding start to next season and heads off to Liege mid season and see how we feel. I'm remaining open minded for now. This could all work out and at least we are spared the danger of going bust even if we are relegated. There are some interesting things to come in the near future - will CP sign on? How much will STs be for next season? It will be a while before we see how all this pans out. Oh, and Roland - please, please stop fecking saying "Huh"!!!

    still do.

Just without all the other b***ocks of being part of a 'network'.
