Not being a mug and believeing all the rumours, but lets say two signings of the profile's of Jackson/Gradel came in, that alongside the current crop and upcoming youth is the way to go. We don't need (or in my opinion) want a team of 'star names,' we've had that in this league in the past and that went terribly...
I'm fairly certain this is the way the new board are gonna play it based on what we've seen and heard so far. Yes, you can argue that interview is quite neutral, but not sure why some aren't all happy with that. The bloke's pratically said he isn't gonna raise the ticket prices substantially - that should be enough to keep some smiling.
keeping the faith that a couple of half-decent household names are gonna come in before the end of the month
The video worked fine and i liked what i heard but i'm amazed that the interviewer never asked the most important question. What about the contracts of the manager and the half of the players ?. We're still none the wiser on the future of the squad or SCP and in my opinion , unless we tie up Chris to another contract we are going down.
Seriously, haven't had time to view the footage yet so really appreciate your report.
All sounding pretty positive to me and a great PR exercise at a time when the silence was beginning to become deafening - for those of a nervous disposition anyway.
We have our next FF meeting on Thursday evening and it would be great if Katrien could be present. I hardly think that our new owner himself will be there, but you never know....
I'm hoping that, in time, once RD has met some of our supporters face to face, he will fully appreciate what a special Club he has purchased. The passion that Addicks have for our Club cannot fail to impress him and I have no doubt that in the not too distant future, he too will be referring to Charlton as OUR Club.
Took me half an hour messing about with Flash Player installations and plugins but finally worked. If transfers is what "he/they" mostly talk about but doesn't know Chris well, who is he talking with? Is it because Chris is having to talk to Katrien who, she admitted, is RD's "eyes and ears".
RD seemed to imply that our academy is what made us attractive. I like the sound of us being able to hold onto our young players longer and getting full value when they do move on.
Just finished watching it on player. I have felt reasonably comfortable about the new ownership since the takeover and felt better about them following this video.
Yes, of course they will be judged by their actions and, ultimately, by results on the pitch. But a few things struck me:
- in this short video alone there has been a recognition that this sort of communication is required and they addressed, as far as they can, the right things.
- we know that RD will be more remote and the faces we will see/hear from the board are KM & RM which is fine. It's all been set out early so we know what to expect.
- they understand the dynamics and don't appear to be chancers or mugs. The idea of improving the matchday experience is a very valid one - some may say 'we'll just get more 'plastics' ' but that means more income to sustain the cub which is what we all want (although I'm disappointed he didn't mention personally refunding my petrol money from Nottingham for the Barnsley game but I'll let him off for now!)
- The earlier promotion of good youth players came across loud and clear. If I was Paul Hart I'd try and get a few early successes then tap RD/KM up for a juicy pay rise. Clearly we will be selling the likes of Cousins at a relatively early stage but not in the desperation we did with ,say, Jenkinson.
- KM seemed nervous in her new role but I'm sure she's very bright and will soon find her feet. She made no pretence that she is RD's eyes & ears and confirmed she is working with CP on strengthening the team (I assume on the contract side, not as some sort of conditioning coach)
- I would contrast the communication with the early days of Slater who, at the time, seemed to tell us everything we wanted to hear. RD is not promising to spend loads but has given two clear changes of direction - use younger players more and improve the matchday experience. We also know they are addressing the pitch issues. I'm sure there's more that hasn't been said but these 3 things give me the impression they have more substance than the previous lot (not difficult, I know).
For now, I'm happy with this and would hope to see quite a lot of activity in the next 7 days
RM 'The Championship is about many clubs trying to gamble to get to the gold from the Premiership, and I think we have got to do it carefully and cleverly, and with the TV money increasing over the next few years and players salaries becoming more appropriate for the div we're in, Champ clubs should be able to exist without losing money'.
Thanks for such a thorough report, Exiled - much appreciated. It all sounds vaguely reassuring, if a bit short on excitement; I suppose that was inevitable. Transfer moves and improved performances on the pitch are our immediate concerns.
RD Q = How has it been 4 u? 'Well it's a challenge obviously, to the extent that the Championship is a very difficult Championship, and indeed many clubs are spending too much money, in the hope that they will go to the PL, and the challenge is to succeed in staying, that is our objective this year, and to later on, possibly build to going back to where this club needs to be long term.'
All generally a positive vibe but overarching all of this positiveness is the crucial matter of maintaining our Championship status this season. No amount of prudent business growing, match day experience and blooding of youth is going to make an atom of difference this season. We need some decent championship standard players in pdq or all of the that interview will amount to Jack Sh1t.
Just watched it. It was a good thing, no doubt about that. The interview has been 'prepared' somewhat, however it made a very good first impression of both Mr Duchatelet and Ms Meire on me. I gather that Roland is positive about Chris Powell, wants to help, and wants to try to stay up, he didn't give details, but did not obfuscate the need to sort out contracts and so on, he simply seems to want to manage that kind of stuff well, intelligently and realistically. I didn't get the impression for one minute that he intends to throw silly, panic money around, and I hope that he can collaborate well via Katrien, with Chris, to help to improve things. I also expect Katrien to approach her job in a common sense problem solving manner. She described an open door policy to her style, and the value of internal communication amongst staff. One aspect of things that I liked was evident in different ways from both Roland and Katrien, and that was a sense of pleasure and enjoyment. Katrien sparkled when she described her experiences at the club, including the Oxford home game (!), and I got a real sense of how much enthusiasm and fun she is having. Roland on the other hand described how attending matches at the Valley should also aspire to being a pleasurable experience in all aspects, especially in terms of building our community of support. I was impressed he should say that rather than emphasise ambition and money. The Academy was emphasised as a very significant feature of our club, and I reckon that is a wise move. if we can at least hold on to players there, rather than lose the best ones to Chelsea and Arsenal then that will be a step forward. Very good interview.
Thanks very much to those who have summarised. It all sounds quietly and reassuringly positive. I only hope they are not under-estimating the real danger of relegation this season. That would be a catastrophe, and what they collectively do on contracts, transfers and loans in the next few weeks will be critical. If we can secure safety this season, I for one will be relishing the close season to see the pitch fixed and hopefully some significant long term strengthening of the team.
I suppose some will be a little disappointed as since the Zabeel no-deal many have been thinking that we'll be the next Chelski/Man City - throwing money around like confetti. Well it's not to be. But it does seem as though we have some very genuine people on board who are not here to fleece the club or asset strip - but to try and grow it sensibly and prudently from the youth academy up. And to grow the business side by making the day a better experience for us fans.
It is all very much what we would like to think of as the Charlton way. Nothing to dislike that I heard - unless you want to be the next Chelski/Man City - but we know as a club we're better than that!
My only slight question is will the desire to grow the business side and improve the matchday experience make a move to the peninsular a potentially attractive one?
Positive interview. Lots of talk about the academy and developing players but being in a stronger position to keep them for longer and sell when we're not desperate for money. RD spoke of improving the whole matchday experience and not making it too expensive. Has spoken with Chris regarding players and hope to improve squad. Katrien Meire came across well, seems to want to include staff on the ground and get their thoughts on what can be done to improve things. Overall nothing to be worried about sounds like the plan is to grow organically can't see bundles of dosh being thrown around, still we tried that when we first got relegated from the PL and that worked out well.
thanks for the précis .. seems rather bland and non committal, am I right in assuming this ? .. anyway, actions speak louder than words
Yep, pretty bland I guess, not really going to make any bold statements at this point that might come back to haunt them. I would say though they came across as professional and thorough, and not that they have some dark plan for Charlton Athletic being a feeder club for SL. Next couple of weeks will show if they mean business, we still need 2 or 3 decent players in, and no key players leaving if we are going to secure Championship status. Relegation doesn't even bear thinking about.

Haven't fought the technology to view it yet, but ... I think the most important thing is that they did it and saw the value of doing it. It's about tone and attitude, and it's a big positive in my book (all good bookshops £9.99).
Thanks gents .. let's hope the ventures up north over the next eight days are more successful than the CAFC attempts to 'inform the masses' ..have a nice weekend
RD Obviously with the FFP, there will be more need now for teams to be smarter in terms of what players they have, especially homegrown players will become much much more important in the future and I think that Charlton has an incredible position today and can leverage much more from its home grown players, that will certainly be an important thing for the future..... Commentator talks about Poyet and the Academy, RD calls it the recipe for success.
Haven't seen it so thanks for all the reports, keep 'em coming SA.
Sounds like a considered and not over ambitious plan with no headline grabbing titbits to placate the fans. So far, so good.
The proof of the pudding is, as ever, in the eating so we shall see how it all pans out but I particularly like KM saying that she is consulting with staff and listening to their ideas. Simple but so important.
No mention of the museum though so only 8/10 ; - )
Well done the Comms guys and to RD, KM and RM for realised just how important communication is. More of the same please.

Onwards & upwards with Roland & Chrissy !

Liked the whole tone, seem genuine people.
