It's always going to be tough, unless we get some new bodies in quick. But we celebrate another game unbeaten and go into the new year feeling a little less like relegation fodder.
Just got back. Lost my voice from screaming at the ref, and the 'Since I Was Young' after the goal - AMAZING Celebration by players and fans when it went in - made it all worthwhile. Otherwise I thought a pretty dire and frustrating game.
The refereeing was unbelieveable, and as the game went on was getting *almost* as ridiculous as the twat at the Leeds home game.
Think the penalty save gave us some belief. Glad we got some justice.
Just when you think old Jackson is past it .... !! .. 6 points over Christmas, just what I hoped for and expected .. if we keep this up we'll yet get in the play offs .. well done to the team and to the management and a Happy, Prosperous and Successful 2014 to them all.
Been back in an hour. Totally deserved at least a point. First 20 minutes Ipswich looked like the good side they are, but for the rest of the game we knock it around well and really battled second half when the only chance they had as the penalty.
Sordell did all right first half and so to lose him sums up his period with us.
Alnwick's save was brilliant. Jacko as always delivers with the goals when needed. Powelly chose the right team and his subs did work well.
Attwell is hopeless and always has been. I have never come across an official who gets the basics so wrong. At least twice in the second half Morro was being pulled over the shop at corners and Attwell was not even watching the game! Can't say he was biased, just useless for both sides.
Deserved a point, a much better performance than against Wednesday (a pitch that has grass on it definitely helps...)
Wasn't too impressed with Wood (even apart from the goal), but the defence was solid enough. Having Solly and Wiggins is so crucial, both for defensive strength and attacking prowess. Alnwick's save was splendid.
Cousins was very good, probably our best player. Stephens did well too. Stewart was frustrating, and even if it should have been a penalty I think he should have got his shot away before the defender got to him. Wilson, too, had a chance in the first half but decided to lay it off, unsuccessfully, when he could have shot.
Sordell wasn't too bad and there is definitely a skilful player in there somewhere, but apart from one shot wide didn't look very threatening. It is, however, unfortunate for him that his first start in ages was curtailed by injury. Kermorgant was excellent. Despite that, is has to be said that we didn't create too many clear-cut chances.
I was mystified as to why Powell brought Cook on rather than Church, but he did OK, even if he is a lightweight and underhits passes something chronic. The decision to bring Church and then Jackson on was fully vindicated by Church's assist for the equaliser, even if neither did much besides that.
I don't want to condemn the ref too much, but it was strange how on at least 3 occasions we were penalised for fouls in the box when we had a corner yet Ipswich never were. We may have had a let-off with the early non-penalty award for Ipswich but got little else throughout the rest of the game. I was too far away to tell if both the Stewart penalty/dive and Ipswich's penalty were the right decisions so I'll wait to see the highlights.
Ipswich were nothing special and tried to do the same as what they did at The Valley, and nearly did. But didn't :-)
Decent point, and a win and two draws from the Christmas/New Year period is about as much as we could realistically expect. Let's hope this result gives the players heart to pull away from the drop zone.
Good point. Deserved point in difficult circumstances. Both teams tried to play football, unlike our game against them at The Valley. Some good performances, but the penalty save was key. We would have been dead and buried if that had gone in, despite playing well. And what a save it was.
Alnwick, Solly, Cousins, Stephens and Kermorgant all good. Even Sordell looked decent till he pulled up. I think he brought Cook on as he was resting Church, who'd played a lot of games and run a lot of miles. The two chances Cook almost reached, Church wouldn't have reached either. A decent striker would have won the game for us.
Was in the home end so had to sit on my hands when JJ scored. Not easy.
Having thought about it for a while I believe attwell gueses decisions, based on crowd reaction. This man is absoloutely hopeless & I hope we never get him again.
The problem with Atwell is - if you are in a position where you have a shot at goal there is absolutely no reason to go down in the hope you get a penalty - Now you would expect him to apply intelligence to the situation but to be fair, maybe that is what he lacks. I don't like a lot of refs - when i played they were ar*****es and I know a few who are complete tw*ts and most I watch at Championship level are awful. They have an arrogance like they know the game and nobody else does- they know the rules, laws or whatever they want to call them (smug gits) but a lot of them don't know what it is like to play in a midfield having your ankles bitten and what goes on on a football field. The laws of the game don't help you there - because you can't read what is happening. What is the problem? I see it often when my son plays - a youngster who should be playing reffing!!!! If he wants to play then become a ref - great but learn more than the rules, learn the game. I'll get knocked by some ref sympathisers for saying this but they are part of a bigger clique than any in Charlton Life. The sooner ex players are fast tracked to becoming refs the better. Rant over - got that off my chest.
Funny game football. That's two games running I've seen a manager go 5 in midfield late in a game to try and protect a result and surrender the initiative. Only this time an experienced manager in Mick McCarthy should know better and came right unstuck.
Reverting to 4-4-2 was a no brainer for CP, as McCarthy is a 4-4-2 traditionalist. Sordell alongside Kermorgant was a strange combination, as both like to come off their markers into space rather than run in behind. There was no balance in attack. The result was a lack of bodies inside the box whenever we got the ball wide or into good positions. Cook did a better job in running beyond the Ipswich defensive line, but it wasn't until Church came on that we had the Ipswich B4 stretched. The full backs were then able to get forward to join in, as the midfield found space to play. McCarthy tried to flood the midfield and hold on for the 1-0, but came unstuck.
In the first half, Ipswich caused us problems with fast breaks from midfield. Wilson allowed his direct opponent to run off him on the goal. A lapse in concentration which gets punished at this level.
Great penalty save by Alnwick. At 0-2 we are dead and buried. It was the key moment of the game.
The Referee was a disgrace and shouldn't be operating at this level. His refereeing of corners was bizarre. Defenders were allowed to hold, grab & wrestle. Forwards were penalised for the slightest nudge.
Excellent away point, which sets us up nicely to finish off this mini-run with 3pts from the Barnsley game.
Despite not creating that many chances it felt like we should have won. I'm not usually one to moan about refs but today did seem to take the pee, scoring at the end it felt as though we'd won. We did look the better team in the second half but like at The Valley, Ipswich sat back and dealt with most attacks. Thank God for Johnnie Jackson (and Alnwick).
Unfortunately we had some real idiots there today, for the first time I got into an argument with a fellow 'fan' because he said my mates were "standing around like bellends," would yell "f****** s***" relentlessly whenever Sordell was near the ball, amongst other offensive nonsense. As I said then, if you can't handle alcohol or cocaine...

Well done for fronting up to him. We don't need fans like that although as you said probably the alcohol.
This wasn’t a game the neutral would have enjoyed, nor was it a game that saw an incredibly skilled Charlton performance. But it was a display of fight and determination against a resolute side in tough conditions with a painfully poor referee not helping Charlton’s cause.
It was the sort of game every Charlton fans has come to appreciate the most since our return to the Championship, the sort of game where the odds are against the Addicks but they run themselves into the ground and achieve a result in the process.
It would be interesting to see what his assessment was today - but he'll be reffing next week which pretty much proves refs look after their own. Mind you they kicked him out the premierhip because he was crap - it doesn't matter about the lower leagues.
Mick McCarthy said that he thought that both were penalties, theirs in the first couple of minutes and the one on Stewart. I thought their bloke stumbled on his own after Wood showed some really surprising speed to catch up with him. Would love to see the Stewart one again, don't know why he would have chosen to dive in that situation.
Wood fellow over, knocking their striker over. The ref made allowances for the conditions imo. They had a similar shout in the 2nd half. Most refs would have given them whatever the weather. Would have to see the Stewart one again.
Sordell 6 Not sure why everyone has given him shit marks, we looked more likely to score with him playing.
Except we scored without him...
Stop trying to be controversial you've been this way all of 2014 ;o)
On a serious note... He doesn't deserve to play for us IMO and has looked worse than church everytime I've seen him play which says a whole lot!
lol, I think we looked more composed going forward with him in the team. None of it really matters now, if he is out for 6 weeks he probably wont get another run in the team.

Just read a post game interview from McCarthy and he said it was Ipswich that changed to a 4-4-2 before the game as they were worried about attacks coming from Solly and Wiggins.

Understand your view but good luck getting any Premiership or even CCC players to become referees!
Charlton fans go ballistic, Atwell was atrocious (sung to the song from Mary Poppins) - crowd of 780 were immense today - went quiet for 15 in second half but the pen save ramped it up again... We deserved our draw. If only we could up our game by 10% we'd win these sort of games - keep believing as good things come to those who wait!! COYA
Been out all day, didn't go, posting without reading. Good point and deserved by the sound of it. Balanced line up and fair play to CP for dropping JJ instead of shuffling to accommodate him. Onwards and upwards. Will be interesting to see what happens if Sordell injured/departing and Stewart goes too. Reinforcements or just get on with what we have.
Funny old game as the man said many moons ago! Of course it's all about personal opinions.
I've read here that Sordell was total s***e, Cooky is a non performing lightweight and Morro was the main man! For my two penny worth I have felt that Marvellous should have been used over the first half of the season - he showed some good touches as a sub at Reading - and today he offered something that The Vicar struggles with, namely control and awareness. I felt for the young man having had to be patient and then going off with a nasty hammy.
Young Jordan Cook showed some spirit and turned the defence on a number of occasions. He deserves another run from the bench assuming that we are not able to reinforce the squad in this winter window.
Now I appreciate that Morro is an honest lad and an honest player but in my opinion (which has no greater credence than any other poster) he is a problem. Sadly he lacks the composure and this is seen in his poor distribution out of defence. I appreciate that we cannot afford a Bobby Moore type of defender in terms of distribution but opposition managers tell their attackers to close down Woody and the FB's which means that the skipper is responsible for too many passes out of defence.
But as I said it's all about opinions and I am not so precious to think that my opinions are the only ones that count ;-)))))

Too little cash for too much bother!
Too right - they get verbally and physically abused on the park pitches on a Sunday morning and they get verbally abused on the professional pitches on a Saturday afternoon.
The only way that you get both quality and quantity is to give the officials the respect given to Rugby officials but in reality this will never ever happen :-(((

Posting very belatedly but have to say it makes a nice change to read posts which on the whole show we watched the same game !
For what it's worth, I was pleased with the starting eleven, feeling Sordell deserved a chance to show what he could do from the off. Obviously ring rusty at first but thought he was starting to show some form when he pulled up. Very sad to read that certain "fans" have had a go from the safety of their keyboards - the lad hasn't been given much match time since he joined us for various reasons & whether he stays or goes back to Bolton, I hope he recovers quickly & forces his way back into first team football.
Decent performance from Cookie when he came on which is a positive, fantastic penalty save from Birthday Ben, strong showings from the usual suspects ( Solly, Yann, Morro, Cousins, Dale, Woody ) and an inspired move from the gaffer to bring on Captain Courageous. What did we used to sing about Stevie Brown ? JJ may not be the youngest in the squad but boy, does he bust a gut for his team just like the Ebbsfleet manager used to ! The goal was well deserved indeed - it would have been a travesty had we come away from this encounter with nothing to show for sheer guts & endeavour.
Others have pretty unanimously said it all regarding the man in the middle. Some unbelievable decisions inc our shout for a penalty with Stewart haring into their box. The silence from the Blues' fans behind the goal "shouted" loudly enough for us what they feared would be given....and the standard of decisions did not improve one iota. A risible display from an incompetent official IMHO.
A very encouraging team performance against an in form side who are used to a decent home pitch & play their successful passing game accordingly. Whatever the future holds for our Club ownership wise, I don't believe it will take a king's ransom to tweak the existing squad & enable it to be more consistent in terms of goals scored and hence, games won. The nucleus is there for all to see and the team spirit should not be underestimated. Some respite for tired legs as the heavy Valley pitch & number of games takes its toll, would be welcome & with the addition of a couple of players this month, a mid table finish ( or better) should be within our grasp come May. That's as far as this lady in red is looking at the moment...

Thought we were unlucky not to win, Attwell was atrocious.
We showed great spirit & Powell got the subs spot on.
A very hard earned point, which I am sure everybody would have been happy with at the beginning.
