Scottish Independence.

  • I think it will be a huge mistake for Scotland to vote yes. The electorate are by default feeling that independence would be the right thing. We all want and aspire to stand on our own two feet. It's our natural inclination to want to be "independent" it is our default position.

I hope that the average Scot can see past that and make a decision based on pure economics and not on some romantic ideal.
  • "the nation state is obsolete" so devolution for Wales ,Scotland and NI but the nation state that is to be split up into regions would be England then ? how that Labour hatred keeps peeping out.

Just been announced that Cameron is skipping PMQs to go campaigning in Scotland. Oh well that's another couple of percent for the yes campaign then.

Cameron, Clegg and Milliband are all going to Scotland tomorrow.

Someone's worked out that every time Ed Miliband crossed the border from South to North, the No vote has suffered in the polls.

Maybe someone needs to take him to one side and politely advise him that he's about as likeable as a brick that's been thrown through your window that has an overdue gas bill attached to it.
  • Evening Standard tonight reporting that Milliband wants us to fly the Scottish flag all over Britain to save the Union.

I don't know. The sight of him trying to eat a square cut sausage sandwich could be just the boon that the No vote are looking for

I saw that on the news earlier, I think it just shows how badly the Unionist campaign has misunderstood what Scottish people actually want.

What, and you think the solution is to send David Cameron? A bloke less 'toxic' to the average Scot you'll struggle to find.

Tbh I'm not sure they truly know what they want.

More say on Scottish issues - they have this - yet they want spending and fiscal policies governed by a currency union aligned to the BoEs decisions.

It's not like the ERM and Euro has worked out that well for smaller economies trying to align themselves with larger ones

This! By waving the Scottish flag, they'd see it as being in support of their independence - those cretins masquerading as elected politicians are so far away from the common person in the street, so far away that's real scary that they speak for us...
  • Get Farage and Boris up there at the same time. So many blocked arteries north of the border there will be carnage.

It was more a comment that there is a direct correlation between Ed Miliband visiting Scotland and the No vote losing support.

But when you look at the numbers, Ed Miliband has a worse approval rating than David Cameron in Scotland:

    David Cameron: Minus 29
    Ed Miliband: Minus 42

    As of 4th Sept 2014

Interestingly, in March 2014 it looked like Ed was twice as unpopular as Dave north of the border.

There you go again, letting facts get in the way of one-sided opinion.
    Tsk.

The Labour Party has requested that the Scottish flag is raised over council buildings in England FFS ---really. Yes of course any flag to be raised but the English one----f==K off to Scotland and stay there
  • Thank God that Muller scored that winning goal for Germany against them at the weekend. Imagine the pissed up fervour of an average teenage Scottish football fan asked to vote on independence had they got a result.much more important and significant a development than any opinion poll ,political or economic reasoned debate and the only time that the English might be truly grateful for what a kraut with his socks round his ankles might have just achieved for the no vote.

Not really. It was a response to Fiiish's ongoing attempt to disproportionately lay the blame for the narrowing of the polls at Labours door rather than the government and particularly David Cameron for offering the thing in the first place.

I made a light-hearted reference to the connection between Ed Miliband and the narrowing and eventual wipeout of No's lead (I never seriously suggested that the gap narrowed purely because Ed kept going over Hadrian's Wall) and then followed it up by correcting your inaccurate claim that the PM is more toxic in Scotland than Ed. I've never claimed that Labour are more to blame for the Government for Better Together's incompetence, please don't use me to deflect attention away from people questioning the basis of claims you make in your posts.

Have you considered that perhaps personal Miliband's ratings in Scotland are more a reflection of his failure to provide effective leadership against such a deeply unpopular Tory led government? There is after all only one Tory MP in Scotland, that's a fair indication to me that the leader of the Conservative Party may not be universally popular up there.

Anyway we're moving off topic, suffice to say it's my opinion that none of the mainstream parties have made a decent fist of getting the No message across but it was always going to be more difficult to 'sell ' a negative.
  • I did not know that Cameron was Scottish, although to be fair he is really about as Scottish as Tony Blair, he would not have a great deal in common with your average Glaswegian.

Just seen the latest polls, neck and neck with 23% undecided, going to be all about who gets their vote out and who can push their message hardest in the final 48 hours.

I don't think the presence of either Cameron or Milliband is particularly relevant up there at this stage, its a bit like the Old Bill turning up to a domestic and then getting turned on themselves.
  • The old bill getting turned on by violence? Never!
