  • Don't post very often but thought I'd share this footie supporter encounter.

I took the family to Whitby for a long weekend break when the internationals were on and we settled in the bar of the hotel to watch the England match on the Friday night.

We were having a chat with a bunch of blokes on the next table and at half time one of them asked who we support. When we told him he jumped up and said I must shake hands with a Charlton supporter, you are so rare and I've never met one before and then continued taking the piss.

I asked him who he supported and he said United and I responded Glory Seeker and we all had a laugh.

He got quite indignant and said I'm not a glory seeker to which I replied are you from Manchester or Salford. He said neither so another shout of Glory Seeker and a few other people including his mates joined in with the laughter.

I then asked him where he was from and he said Wigan, so I repeated Glory Seeker and we all pissed ourselves laughing.

I then asked him why don't you support Wigan and he said because their a shit team. I didn't say Glory Seeker as I started to feel sorry for him, dozy prat.

His parting shot was, well we like rugby better in Wigan.
  • Was only my 2nd away game of the season, the other being Bournemouth. But now I have a job and have to work weekends, I can still go to away games as I won't have to be at the place until 9/10pm, which is quite handy.

You don't have to justify to anybody but yourself!

Do about 10 a year. i am embarrassed about our numbers. Our away attendances are way below what they should be in my opinion. 200 supporters is pathetic( not talking about the ones who went) and there are no ways to put a positive spin on it even though many try.

People talk about away games as if they are a chore but to me its what football is all about. If i could afford it i wouldn't go to the valley and just do every away game always a lot more fun.

Our fans just don't care enough. Harsh but true.

So you care so much, you would rather give your money to other teams than us! That is what you are saying above! I think going to every away game is something for the young and the sad - well look at all those Newcastle fans that travel -they define sad IMO.

I will always be a season ticket holder and take my wife and son to games- As you get older you get other responsibilities that mean you can't justify well over £100 and a whole day to travel away. It doesn't mean I don't love my club!

We don't have the same away culture that some other clubs have. If you look abroad you see similar. It could demonstarte that we are a bit more like these and our home gates are better than our rivals!
  • A club that pays players thousands of pounds a week? I don't lose any sleep not giving them £20 a week, trust me.

I am in agreement with you though.
I believe its the younger element that do not travel. Lots of old people at away games.

I have heard a few people say we have an old aged away following. I have travelled away with other clubs with friends and there are old people at all of them. You just don't notice because they are diluted down by the abundance of younger supporters that we don't seem to have. Shame because when we have 1000+ we generally make lots of noise.

  • I usually listen to away games on CAFCPlayer. Win, lose or draw you I always enjoy hearing our travelling support make plenty of noise.
  • Just want to add that there is NOTHING like being at an away game and seeing your team win !!

Signed from one of the sad, old away regulars.

( What will happen when we fall off the perch ???)
