Two things from me: first, and oddly, I was thinking just the other day that our badge was begininning to look a little tired and dated. We do have to recognise that tastes change and unless you go for the very traditional "coat of arms" style which probably has that heritage look that stands the test of time, then a logo has to be regularly refreshed. I can see that in the next few years we will all be thinking that it's time for a new badge. Second, a badge, logo, call it what you will, needs to be readily identifiable. In my opinion the best company profiles are unfussy, either just the words or just the logo, not both. (Again it's just my opinion but the ultimate and most instantly recognisable logos have no words: Nike's swoosh; Apple's, well, Apple; the leaping Puma; and the Mercedes star.) The Merc one is quite interesting. It's changed eight times. Here's the 1916 one and the current one: So, it seems that our style of logo is around 100 years out of date!
How can it be more easily-identifiable than it already is? Surely changing it makes that more difficult.

Not sure you can compare a local football club to brands that are trying to sell high end luxury products. Also all of those brands you mentioned have a need to be contemporary and cool to continue to sell to the ever-changing consumer. Football clubs predominantly live off their heritage and pull in fans from their local community. I do believe that the logo/badge could be developed and adapted to create clothing ranges that feel more modern but the badge on the shirt shouldn't change, especially because we have a strong one. I think Palace's recent upgrade of their logo was right fior them, their original one was s**t (new one is only slightly better!)
I've always found the sword in hand a bit naff and have to agree with the OP that if we move on to bigger and better things our badge shouldn't still be saying "Nice little Charlton"

Looks like the OP was still using the sword in hand though.

Yes but it's a much bigger one. I think that's what maybe_baby likes about it ;-)

Agreed about change...not the sword. Sorry, should have worded that better.

Nah...crossed AK47's would be my choice, now that's what you call ULTRA!
Didn't our hooped socks from 2005ish have just the sword in hand on them? Thought it worked quite well there but don't want to change the badge. As well as ruining tradition, there's absolutely no need to change. Our club badge is strong and simple. It'll stand the test of time and I can't ever see us being in the scenario Palace and some other clubs have where we have to try and 'modernise'.

We laugh at palace for their new badge and people now want us to lose the sword?! We live by the sword! (dont we?)
But the sword I thought was to compliment our nickname - The Valiants. But seeing as no one uses that contrived nickname anymore, what relevance does the sword have in relation to our identity now as The Addicks?

not many clubs have badges that represent their nicknames these days. Think of both as a bit of Charlton history that we should want to hold on to. If we change the badge completely we may aswell change the colour of the kit and call ourselves Greenwich United.

What should we do then Threadkiller? Shove a lump of 'addock in its place?!
Badge we should have but with Addicks, not valiants
I just think it just doesn't sit right to have The Addicks alongside our sword. I love our nickname and like our badge but they don't really go together

Edit: It didn't carry the picture of the badge
