a) he's right footed playing mainly left so cuts inside b) once inside he rarely uses it constructively c) on right he is moderate at best d) Who do you want on left, Martin or Harriott?
Martin is a very talented footballer but lacks physical strength required at Championship level as well as being inconsistent with his final ball. Just stand next to Lee and you realise he's built like a bean pole - you could snap him in two, whereas Haynes and Harriot built like brick outhouses (or words to that effect). I watched him at Ipswich in many games and he's one of those players you know can do it, you want to do it, but he doesn't do it enough, if at all. If CAFC are looking for Premiership then they need to do better than Martin. I genuinely wish him well and hope that he finds a club and does well - he is good enough when he puts his mind to it and when he's not physically challenged.
Immediate thought was no thanks, but then I remembered I was forming that opinion on a young.lad who had had no consistent run of first team football. I've no idea if he gas progressed in the last couple of years.
Martin reminded me of one of those versatile, technically sound players, who lack having a definitive position. Joe Cole and Martyn Waghorn I would describe similarly.
I like a square peg for a square hole, and I'm not sure Martin is it.
Also i noticed ipswich released chopra too! I would have him here
Do we want players who don't really want to play football, let alone cherish the badge? Chopra has a severe gambling habit and his head is not in the right place. CAFC have flourished on players who battle and want to play for their manager and their supporters and who, in time, even if not CAFC bred, play their hearts out for the badge.
He played a lot under Jewell at Ipswitch. Enough said! put a good manager like MM in charge down there and he gets released...Emmm.
I don't want him, Why take a player from a team that finished below us who has been released on a free? Ipswitch will be a stong team next year. MM is off loading the rubbish
True - would be nice to have that bit of pace to outrun the fullback - need someone who can produce some magic once he's passed the full back - not convinced Lee is the man. He has an irritating habit of beating the full back and then pulling the ball back and trying to beat him again, instead of whipping in the early ball for the in-place front men.
Danny Haynes can provide pace down the wings, if required and both Solly & Wiggins can overlap well. Would be nice to have an out and out speed machine full time winger, though, for sure.
Martin can play central or right/left mid when he has a ball winner working in the middle with him - he's technically a very skilful player.
It's his thread, hence I'm surprised he hasn't ventured an opinion himself. Nothing wrong with that just find it a bit strange that he seems to do this on all the threads he starts.
To be fair Martin wasn't released, but failed to agree terms, as the new contract he was offered was a lot lower than his old one. Of course you could argue that he was indirectly released, by being offered a contract MM knew he would reject!
Truth is Lee Martin may not be a 'Mick McCarthy' player, but that does not mean he is not a 'Chris Powell' player or can't do well elsewhere.
I thought he was pretty good for us, was very good away at Orient - his flick for Waggy's goal was class - and he was superb at London Road in the 5-1 win.
No offence to Waggy or Green but Martin probably offers more than both of them.
If we are broke then we could do a lot worse than Martin but if there is some money I hope we can find someone better. I rate him higher than Kerkar, Green, Waggy and Jordan Cook.

wasnt released, couldn't agree terms. good enough back up imo

When their all playing to their full potential, Martin offers more than both of them imho. When they're all playing poorly though I'd rather have Wagstaff as at least you know you'll get energy and commitment.
Like I've already said I'd take him back at the right price, but based on his last time with us I'd use him as an impact sub to try and turn a tight game, at least to start with. I get why people don't fancy him instead of Waggy but really he'd be more of a replacement for Kerkar or and upgrade on Cook because Waggy has already been 'replaced' by Pritch and Wilson.

Problem with Martin, as I recall, is that he has no end product - he's not a good crosser of the ball - unlike Green who has a good end product (crossing) but lacks pace and skill to take the full back on - if we could combine Green's end product with Martin's skill then that would be an ideal signing!
I must by getting confused here , I though we were talking abou the Lee Martyn fella we had on loan from Ipswich that struggled to do the business in league one for us.
No that was John Martyn, "I don't want to know 'bout evil, I only want to know about love".
The Lee Cook and Lee Martin threads got me thinking in a different way. We have lost some players that were released, but in some cases they were not starters anyway. I see us needing maybe 3 players to go straight into the first 11, and then replacement 'squad players' for the squad players that left.
So maybe Lee Martin or Lee Cook for Salim Kerkar is not actually that bad a swap.

A good point, other than Fuller all the players we signed last season were squad players. We need to attract a little quality to strengthen the starting XI.

Some talent I suppose but I was never sure if he was a striker who can't score, a winger who can't cross or a midfielder who can't tackle.
He neither flattered nor deceived me. Good luck to him but not here or anywhere else in the Championship.

Seriously, I think we can do better than Lee Martin now. I liked him when he was with us but... we're looking up.
