  • set up like the away team and sat off first 20 but eventually it worked as they ran out of ideas. May have backfired had they scored first but once we did it enabled us to do what we're good at - working hard and grinding out a win. The line up played to our strengths - 3 in midfield suits us, waggy back is a massive plus with his workrate and pace and kermo is getting back to last seasons warrior like form. Saturday home win at last, only 5 points behind millwall, palace on the slide, Wiggins and Haynes to come back in. Things are looking up.
  • Just to echo what's been said, the most pleasing thing about yesterday was that 10 of the 11 were here last season and they ALL performed admirably.

Powell got it spot on. Pack the midfield with 2 pacey wingers.

Hamer was a spectator for most of the game and didn't have much to do. He had no chance with the goal but his kicking was a little bit wayward at times. I think that was due to a combo of poor back passes and good pressure from them.

Solly is so calm and personified it's cool. If we can keep him till the end of the season I'll be thankful and amazed. It was so nice to see Taylor step in as if he'd never been out. I thought it wasn't going to be his day when he had his head wrapped up but he battled through. He made a superb tackle to dispossess their winger in the 1st half and then played a nice ball through. Morro was back to his normal self too. I thought Evina was good. They couldn't get down that left hand side and the Evina/ Waggy combo worked! One criticism though would be there was too much hoof in the first half. Second half he got it down and was so much better.

Wilson had a good game. Perfect cross for the 2nd. The 3 CM's were dominant. I haven't seen them that dominant this season (haven't been a lot due to work but this was my 10th game). Stephens did lose the ball on occasions but worked so hard to get it back which was pleasing. Pritchard's first touch let him down a few times. When he gets that sorted, he will be a top top CCC player. JJ led by example. Scored, tackled, ran and controlled the game. Waggy (my MOM) was superb. Taking into account that he was out of position on the left, he intercepted the ball for the first goal, should have had a penalty just after that (the ref's only mistake) and then scored the second. He ran his socks. Closed down well, put their defence and GK under so much pressure. If was odd seeing him warm down when off the pitch. He just looked knackered!! A rare sight.

Kermorgant had a hard job in leading the line. He done it well though. He played players in, he was winning headers and defended from the front. They countered late and Kermo sprinted back to win the ball. Warrior.

A mention to Harriott. That skill was immense! He is still a bit raw and you could see his inexpereince. A better option with his first shot (which won us a corner I think) would've probably been to play it back to Stephens who was in more space.

I can't see why Powell changed it to a 4-4-2 in the end by bringing on Fuller. Kermo looked knackered and I would've thought a like for like would've been better or just to bring on a defender (Fox/Ajayi).

All in all, a great performance.
  • I thought we looked good when we had the ball but struggled at times to get anywhere near it.

Yann gets much less of things his own way this season vs last.

The kid Harriot seemed to enjoy himself when he came on.

  • 6 points from the play-offs. We can dream

7 points behind Watford and we've played a game more but yes we can still dream.

Certainly better to be looking up than down.
Watford are on track for 76 points - assuming the team that ultimately finishes 6th reaches that tally, it implies we would need 40 points from 19 games, equivalent to 97 over a full season.
Nobody seems to have picked up on your point here, NYA. You imply that it is already pretty much a fantasy to suppose that we can realistically make the 6th spot.

    Nobody tell TJ, ok...

  • Most has been covered well. I enjoyed Henry's report except that I didn't think CP took a risk. I asked last week what we had to do to win at home and Powells answer was to play at home like we do away. For me, very reminiscent of Curbs. JJ answering people who said that he was too slow, with a MOM performance. I would love to know what is going on behind the scenes.
  • Great support today especially north upper who never stopped and well done for that and yes it does make a difference without doubt especially as we started so poorly. I thought Wagstaff man of the match mainly because he has in him the desire and determination and persistence to chase every ball and this isa what tipped it today for charlton. After Haynes he is the fastest established player and it made sense to play him as up front we lack pace. I thought Harriot brilliant for the same reasons we think Haynes is great; pace. Everyone played well and again Jackson our talisman is proving everyone wrong. Powells team selection really worked today and depending on his hunger to establish a place I would play wagstaff again, sell bwp, and give Harriott more game time. I was half expecting a new signing announcement but Wagstaff and Harriott's performances outshone all expectations such that it was like two new signings. Great stuff!
  • Just a comment about their goal. That was the third time I can remember where an opposing player has picked up a headed clearance on the edge of the box and scored. Huddersfield and Sheff Wed being the other two I think. Need a midfielder there to stop this from regularly happening.

Udders scored a pen didnt they.
    in the cup
The pen udders scored was in the league game and the one they scored in the cup was just a ball over the top but may be mistaken as I wasnt at the cup game.

Thought matty taylor done well yesterday. To come in after not playing for a long period and be put up against ince, phillips and tayler-fletcher, I thought he put in a very good shift.

Indeed. With the risk of relegation now much reduced, but with little realistic chance of a Play-Off place, it must now be tempting to minimise short-term costs and then go again next season. It really isn't obvious why the Board would sanction expensive loans.
  • "Little realistic chance of a Play-Off place" - Really?

We're only 7 points off at the moment and there's still plenty to play for. We've already seen that this division is pretty open - we've beaten two of the top three and drew against the other, whilst getting dicked at home by second bottom - so I would say that anyone in mid table who puts a run together could have a realistic chance.

Will that be us? Maybe not, but I don't think we can write ourselves off just yet (for promotion or relegation) as you never know what the transfer window will bring.

Exactly, i doubt we will get a chance at promotion but so often any team can nick that 6th place and then the football gods can shine on any club.

Still think we will finish about 11th(which is great) but with so many games to be played and only 7 points, no need to throw in the towel just yet.

  • Not going down = good season. Mid table = great season. Anything more and SCP should get manager of the year!

As they say....This^. But that's too realistic for some.
  • We would need at least three new bodies to come in during the window to have the sort of team capable of making a serious push for the PO's, if we had a 20 goals-a-season striker then we'd have a shot but we are probably going to draw too many games through lack of firepower.

A trip to THE Palace, surely !

  • Good win in which Powell got the tactics and team selection spot on. Much like the Brighton game we went 4-5-1 and made sure we were difficult to break down. We can't pass the ball like some teams in this league, but we seem to know how to defend against it.

Solly was good as usual, Taylor looked solid as he did in most games last season. Morrison doesn't seem to be as comfortable/confident on the ball as he has been. Evina did well enough and should improve with a run of games.

Was surprised to see Waggy start, but not surprised to see him score. He's never going to be the type of player everyone wants t to see, but he did well - scored while playing out of position and having only made a handful of appearances all season. Waggy, Wilson and Pritchard's energy is just what we have needed in midfield and it's something that should get more out of Stephens and Jackson.

Nice to see Harriott make an appearance, hope to see him gets a few more chances. Thought Jackson had a good game. Hasn't always stood out even in the middle for me, but as well as scoring he got some good tackles in.

Yann kept battling away despite not always having a lot of support.

Some may point out too much long ball/lack of quality on the ball, but we played to our strengths of solid/organised defending and working hard as a team. When the space opens up we do play some decent football.
  • Good result, back to back wins, our first league double and our first win on a Saturdays! Happy days.

Thought they looked dangerous at first but when we woke up we took new control of the game. Although the game was very much a midfield battle.
I don't really remember them esting Hamer too much.

Was glad to see Waggy starting and said he'd score.

I think hopes of play offs are unrealistic tbh, but it's all about opinions. Will be happy to just stay up!

Thought the atmosphere was quite decent and was quite proud of myself for starting the 'one Scotty wagstaff' song.

Can't afford to go to Blackburn but I'm looking forward to our next game, hopefully them team will be brimming with confidence

Might as well get in first. Song for the lad:

    "Shoot low, sweet Harriott,
Comin' for to score at home......."

    Erm, sorry.

  • Well firstly a very welcome 3 points and a Saturday win, we haven't seen too many of them this season. This was a good battling performance for the first 15-20 minutes I thought we were going to get a bit of a Football lesson as they had all the possession but gradually we settled down and then JJ popped up with a goal and we never looked under threat from that point in fact Hamer had nothing to second half (except pick the ball out of the net) which was encouraging.

Notable performances for me were Taylor who played very well, with a second minute goal line clearance, JJ, Stephens, Wilson and as ever Solly. It's funny how one player can polarise supporters and I refer to Waggy who I really like for his committment and effort and as we have come to expect he pops up with a goal when needed. But the rest of his game for me consisted of running around a great deal, losing the ball and not making too many telling passes. Sorry everyone despite the goal I just don't see him as the quality we need at this level.

Loved Harriots cameo now ther is a boy with a few tricks and plenty of pace let's hope he is not another LLoyd Sam who promised much but in the end didn't deliver.

Special mention for Phillips real quality the way he peeled off for his headed chance ion the second minute was class, his distribution and general positional play is still exceptional I would have loved to have had him at our place a few seasons ago what a difference he would have made. As for Tom Ince it may have been a quiet day but how anyone thinks he is worth £7M is beyond me.

Great performance from pretty much the whole team, with the unfortunate exception of Stephens (again). Great result.

    ???
Thougth he had a decent game, don't get why he has become the scapegoat week in week out. I think he is a decent player and can get better in a Charlton shirt. If we were to lose him we would struggle to find a decent replacement on our budget
  • A slightly interesting point to make is that all 11 starting players were playing in L1 last season, 10 with us (+ Wilson).

Can anyone shed any light on (unused) sub Ajayi? Never heard of him but guessing he's a youth product?..........................

Saw Ajayi play in the youth cup at Soham last season, along with Sho Silva and Adeez stood out
  • I remember Powell mentioning what Poyet said to him about regretting keeping faith with the players who won league one for so long, and thinking that Powell had actually gone too far the other way. The last two games have seen the spirit of that team back, and it's been rewarded with two hard fought wins.
  • Agree with that we looked like a TEAM on Sat not the bunch of past talented misfits all just past there sell by dates with nothing to lose! Every one worked their nuts off on sat fought for every ball realy pleased for everyone of them.

Agreed AA...some very blinkered eyes looking at what he does for the team and how they look to him, for the most part, when playing through the middle.

I'll agree that his performance has improved since the last home league game but then I, and many others, rated him pretty low for that game so that improvement was needed. I still felt that he lost possession too often, often turning into trouble whilst looking for a pass and whilst it was nice to see him tackling again I always worry when he does that as he has a touch of the wild Scholes-type tackle about him, especially after losing possession, and we cannot afford to go down to 10 men.

  • Good three points. One thing concerned me. From the Covered End Upper - the kit Hamer chose made it look like he was playing for Blackpool. Did anybody else notice that?
  • my mate has missed 4 home games, the 3 midweek wins and this one.....thinking of confiscating his ST !
