Charge to use Blackwall Tunnel

  • People who live east of the city will have to pay a toll to cross the Thames, its only fair that those living in the west of London should do the same.
    This.

I wonder when Sadiq Khan will bring in a toll to cross Hammersmith Bridge, Chelsea Bridge, etc etc
He has to rebuild the farking thing first…
  • The elizabeth line to Custom house and whitechapel (change for one stop to Stratford) etc, is a public transport option for some.  Can see this reducing to £2 rather than £4 in the way billymix suggests above. Still would prefer either all crossings or none to be taxed. Can't see the Woolwich ferry being free for much longer either.

i still think residents living within a 5 mile radius of the tunnel mouth either sode should get an exemption/reduced rate

Ah the Fuck South London Toll I see, I get the toll for all the lorries and vans etc driving all the way through London to get to the Blackwall but £8 a day for someone who lives just South of the river and has to work just to the North of it is extortion
    That's why there's a consultation
There's a facility to appraise the proposer of issues and apparent unfairnesses.
Raise your matter through the channel provided and with your local political representation - it's guaranteed to be a voter issue next time around.
Maybe Sam3110 could spruce up their delivery a bit, profanity and paranoia don't go over well.

Devil's advocate and Sadiq Kahn will point out the public transport alternatives to being 'extorted £8/day' especially for residents close to the tunnels.

Unless Kahn really is the car hating uber-woke pro-cycling loony who is desperate to lose the next mayoral election, I'd venture to suggest that this initial 'proposal' is the worst case/maximum charges scenario.  Any operator with any nouse will initially offer up something nasty so they look attentive and considerate when they enact something sweeter come the time.
If you believe the consultation will change anything I would remind they also conducted a consultation for the expanded ULEZ…
  • Apparently electric cars going to pay ulez after 2025. I think rickshaws will be ok though
  • http://www.standard.co.uk/news/transport/drivers-to-be-charged-2-to-use-blackwall-tunnel-under-tfl-plans-8252941.html £2 fee proposed to use the Blackwall Tunnel. I give up. What are these ********* going to charge for next?
    Breathing.

Which makes zero sense as the name is Ultra Low Emissions Zone, and whilst the electric they run isn't emissions free, the cars themselves are

It's going to cost £250m to fix, it'll end up with a toll.

Coming to a town/city near you soon aswell.
  • I guess the Dartford Crossing will be increasing prices to fall in line with Blackwall Tunnel

An utter f***ing joke - the Silvertown tunnel is a ridiculous idea thought up by a bunch of clowns. Local residents get tolls and more pollution.

Whatever way they try and dress it up, it's a complete and utter piss take.

Tunnel had to happen imo. its the funding from central govt that pushed them into this position. This is why we are so behind on infrastructure. Getting anything funded let alone built is impossible.

As I say this as someone who until fairly recently lived on the peninsular and was affected by the works.
  • Out of interest where exactly is this new tunnel ?  Where does it come out in South & East London ?

It's a ludicrous idea. Will lead to more traffic in a polluted area.

We don't need another tunnel in this area- nobody can justify it. Khan made no attempt to do so and local opposition has simply been ignored.

We don't? Blackwall is running well over capacity every day. Dartford crossing is the busiest stretch of road in the country also well over capacity. We need one there and one at gravesend imo in order to have any chance of future proofing.
  • The Silvertown tunnel is much needed as pointed out above.

Sadly the tolls will be here now for the foreseeable, regardless of how quick it takes to cover the costs from the paying road user for that new tunnel.

The Dartford crossing is a prime example of that

Should have built a crossing further down to spread out the load, Dagenham to Crossness/Thamesmead would have made more sense IMO, and there's lots of distribution centres on both sides of the river there so they could have made them commercial-centric

Yes but when enough money has been collected it will go back to being free.
    Just like

We don't need two river crossings in the same area - even more pollution.

It's a f***ing disgrace and crap for the local area. A mental idea but par for the course.

TFL are utterly clueless - not sure how this will meet their pollution goals.
  • Apparently electric cars going to pay ulez after 2025. I think rickshaws will be ok though
Not the ULEZ just the central congestion zone.

Electric cars were except from the congestion charge for a couple of years as an incentive to get people to change.

These road improvements will lead to more people driving so won't improve the traffic. In LA they have 10 lane freeways at a standstill, although in fairness their public transport isn't great, unlike London's.
