  • When I said he is not Charlton man, I meant we are hardly falling over him with his constant valley attendance. He,s far more likely to take up his free seat at Chelsea. Yes, he turns up for the anti racism stuff, and that's obviously close to his heart. But that does not make him a Charlton man.

Having Had the pleasure of spending the day with him earlier this year I can assure you he is very much a Charlton man. He knows the inner workings of the club and has been on very good terms with numerous members of the board in the last few years.

He is very knowledgeable about the club and the game and is also very well connected I would also point out he's not exactly hard up the cash - Certainly not in the multimillionaire bracket but he is no peasant

  • The more football men involved rather than suits the better

Although without trying to sound stupid, and a genuine question, can anybody tell me exactly what a chairman does?
  • Personally would be delighted if this come's true as shows we are a club looking to the future.
  • Only taking positives out of this. Slater is articulate and intelligent, but so are most of the lawyers I work with. He has been OK in fairness, but as with SCP, I think Paul Elliott will better connect with us the fans and that is no bad thing, as we, like all other passionate fans around the UK are a needy bunch and don't take silence too well....
  • Is Paul black then? its unclear from that article.

Rob you miss the point it HAS to be true its a labour supporting tabloid !

Although i was more gutted he left us for peanuts than Paul walsh i just dont see what either party gets here? Elliot has no experience at all that level, and im sure he makes good money from his Journo work why would he want it?

    Anyone fancy a Black Russian

Is this a 'Would Ya?'? Needs a picture.
  • Serious question. How close is Paul Elliot to Abramovich ? Close enough to be recommended by the Russian to a couple of fellow countrymen associates ?

  • It's no surprise to anyone that we may end up with a new chairman in the near future.

If you had to choose someone with the right qualities to represent the club at a corporate level, then he ticks all the boxes. He is intelligent, articulate, knowledgeable and, by all accounts, a rather decent sort.

He also happens to be black, which is significant to the wider sporting world, I suppose. If I thought that a black person were to be appointed simply as some sort of PR attempt at tokenism, I would be concerned ('positive' discrimination, is after still discrimination). However, if you ignore the race factor and look at his qualities (see above), he is basically an ideal candidate and would deserve the chance on merit; I'd go further than that - we'd be very lucky to get him. If (and it's a big if, of course) it comes to pass, I won't be unhappy about it at all, quite the reverse.
  • I was at The Valley Superstore this morning.

There were two or three strange looking men walking into the Club with snow on their boots.
  • I think my dad tied him to the radiator at school

It would be good to have a black chairman to go with our black manager and black players. As for the jerk chicken, would make a welcome variety to the match day offerings. Still i won't believe it till its in the Mail.

How do you know he has no experience? He's involved in all sorts of things with uefa, FIFA and more recently the olympic committee.

He has made a large amount of money aside from football so has obviously been doing something right

He goes to every Charlton game when his work permits and takes Charlton over Chelsea every time

Good question, it seems to vary greatly......
They normally have a financial interest in the club, and in most professional clubs transfers are dealt with in the details, after the manager/club have identified them. In some cases the chairman get's involved with identifying possible players.
It is essential that chairman and managers have a good and close relationship with each other, and a clear structure of who does what. The chairman is there to oversee the governance, and proceedure matters are carried out with the running of the company rules. Chairman I feel should be there , but not heard. Tottenham's chairman seems to be a frustrated wanna be manager, and get involved in all sorts of football team selection, and even tactics. To me that is the managers role. But it seems that each club defines it's role, and being a chairman years ago, is very different from these day's.
I have no idea about Paul, having not dealt with him on any level, or even met the guy. But he sees to speak with sense, and is involved with football. Hopefully he can give the owners a good charlton steer, under his chairmanship.
  • Mmmmm

Automatically apprehensive of the mirror Source. But it is a strange one to leak if it has no substance. I believe it could well happen. Any change behind the scenes would Result in a change in puppet and Elliott would be an amazing coup in my opinion. Dont underestimate slater's fracas in Madrid as a factor in this.

    Paul Elliott is a Diamond
  • WOW ! Didn't see that coming ! Paul was in the Directors' Box for the Blackburn match , sitting alonside another very smart black guy who was obviously known to the fella I believe was Martin Protheroe ( hope that makes sense !) But I'm guessing he is often seen in that area of the ground...

But as someone in the clique is known to say ( yawn) I won't belive it until it's on the OS ...

I wonder if it had anything to do with this...?

"Charlton To Become First African Owned Club? (article from 2007 http://www.footballeconomy.com/archive/archive_2007_aug_05.htm)

Charlton could be the first African owned club in England if a bid led by an influential Nigerian businessman succeeds. His group has already inspected The Valley and is also believed to have had access to the club's book and carried out the process of due diligence. A deal could be concluded in a few weeks with the businessman being represented by Chris Nathaniel of the London-based NVA management group. However, sources close to Charlton suggest that there are a few sticking points and a Russian consortium is hot on the heels of the Nigerian led bid. £50m is a good price for Charlton given their London location which usually puts a premium on the price. The club is run on a strong business footing and a number of initiatives such as the Valley Express coach service have built up the fanbase. The training ground at Sparrows Lane covers a large area. Given the government policy emphasis on building houses, it should be possible to get permission to build on all or part of it. The Valley itself is designated for recreational use, but is in a good location close to Charlton Station. The designation could be changed if a greenfield stadium site was found elsewhere in Greenwich, e.g., on vacant land next to the Dome and North Greenwich tube."
  • Could get Rob Elliott back from Newcastle as well.

Also, I'd like to see Billy Elliott on the wing and Matt Elliott as defensive coach.

This is the modern way whereby the 'owner' and 'chairman' are two different people. Managing Director would be a more accurate title rather than chairman.
I know little about Elliott. If the people with the cash (if they exist) appoint him ... so be it

Perhaps we could get a whole team of Elliots. We could make a start by calling in Elliot Ness to track some more down.
  • Not on newsnow or the os.
  • I can say that the colour of Paul Elliott's scarf is certainly red and white. In as much as any pro/ex-pro supports a club in my view Paul Elliott is an Addick. Many footballers find an affinity with the local club of their childhood and community once their playing days are over. Even that West Ham total legend Billy Bonds was wont to turn out for Charlton Vets, and their are examples everywhere.
I have met and spoken to Paul when he was a very young player at Charlton, he is a product of Blackheath Bluecoat school (Rio Ferdinand too), a local boy. He struck me then as a very articulate intelligent young man...far from a monosyllabic youngster responding and never initiating in conversation. Paul struck me as an enquiring, interested and engaging person, and always very positive about Charlton. I can say with confidence that Paul Elliott would make a top five of best ever Charlton central defenders.
Any time I have come across Paul as a pundit or in an interview (infrequent) he has shown care and respect to us. I remembering him describing Rufus as a 'collusus' in one game, and most poignantly of all, as a member of a radio discussion group he described the most disappointing moment of that season as being 'The relegation of Charlton Athletic' (note the 'athletic'!) when Parky took us down into league one.
Times have moved on, and I don't know what Paul has been doing of late, or what motivates him, but I could say that of Michael Slater in recent times. I do know that if their is any truth in this story, then our figurehead would be a Charlton Athletic fan, not a fan of Manchester City.
  • easy top five charlton defender

Well I don't have a clue whats going on as usual, I'm just going to watch it unfold but whatever happens I hope it benefits the club greatly.
  • Always see Paul in the board room/with slater And Jimenez after the games from outside the west stand - have a peek into the windows

Looks like we're gonna be the first club bought with the proceeds of credit card fraud too! Great!
  • A very interesting artical by the mirror. We are all aware newspapers sometimes produce stories from snippets of info, but this reads a bit different. Was M.S. talking to a Mirror reporter? It could be part of a plan by the current owners to raise the club profile by appointing Paul Elliot. I doubt that a take over is about to happen because (as others have said) the new owners would appoint thier own chairman.
  • Glad to see the back of Slater being the mouthpiece for the money man who pulled out he has no one to front anymore. He has no interest in CAFC and I would question his professional lawyer status.
