  • Not only played well since return but cant underestimate the impact of someone out there who can galvanise the team.JJmay be captain and always leads by example but good to have someone else out there to rally the troops.

That is my only criticism of Jackson. Can't question his leading by example it's well unbelievable but I think as captain he lacks the vocal aspect needed to drag players into the game. Hughes has that but Jacko must remain captain. Think Hughes will go on to make a fine coach / manager.

  • A Cliff Holton for the 21st Century.

Won't play many matches in total for us but a tremendous impact in helping shape our destiny both this season and last.

For the youngsters: Cliff Holton joined us at the age of 38 or thereabouts when we were looking relegation in the whites of the eyes with about 10 games to go c1965/6. His goals and general influence about the place played a massive part in saving us and he moved on during the summer.

Sounds a bit like Maurice Setters Len lol
  • Top bloke is Hughey.

We never lose with Andy Hughes !

If it's not a song it should be (to 'when the saints' tune)
We never lose with Andy Hughes
We never lose with Andy Hughes
He's full of red white & Charlton
We never lose with Andy Hughes :-)
"He wears the red & white of Charlton" may flow a bit better :)
  • Who else is now unable to stop singing the new Andy Hughes song?

Don't give me nightmares by mentioning names like that! :-)

That bloke's legs were the bandiest I've ever seen. Hard to believe that once upon a time he was a decent player for Man Utd when you think how he played for us.

For the youngsters he made Gary Doherty at his slowest and worst look good!

Definite candidate for my worst ever X1 in 50 years.
  • Absolutely love the guy. Was gutted when he was dropped last season for Darel Russell as I think we played our best football with him in the middle. Danny Hollands was able to push forward more and scored a few in that period, and I think Jacko is being able to do the same now.

I also think with him being in the team, we are able to get the best out of Solly and Wiggins on an attacking front because they know that if they bomb forward then Hughesy will be there to fill the gap.

Think it's a testament to the guy that even when he held off a Leeds player to get us a goal kick rather than give away a corner, the Leeds fans still chanted his name.
  • Type of player who is often taken for granted yet makes a significant contribution, and isn't easy to replace. Someone else mentioned Keith Jones who would fall into the same category.
  • Kinsella said that Keith Jones made him the player he was.

  • So the big question - has he got the legs for another Championship season?
  • edited April 2013
I would think so, Weegie ..... Even though he was 35 in January, he's only played a dozen games in 2 seasons.
And 3 of those were last week.

Compare that to 31 year old Johnnie Jackson!
  • Interesting to note that Hughes has never been in a losing Charlton team when he has started a game.He has only played half a dozen times but still an interesting fact...

Nice fact. Unfortunately it doesn't work for cup games but long may it continue in the league. 22 points from a possible 24:

    22/10/11 Charlton 4 Carlisle 0
    25/10/11 Wycombe 1 Charlton 2
    29/10/11 Hartlepool 0 Charlton 4
    05/11/11 Charlton 5 Preston 2
    19/11/11 Brentford 0 Charlton 1
    30/03/13 Charlton 3 Bolton 2
    03/04/13 Brighton 0 Charlton 0
    06/04/13 Charlton 2 Leeds 1
  • So the big question - has he got the legs for another Championship season?

He's a fitness nut. I bet he still holds his own in training and experience will tell him when and how during a game to conserve energy. One more year deffo.
  • Andy hughes the 2 dog

SHG you are not wrong. I am led to believe its between the 2 dog and the scotty dog in the bleep test.

  • Sorry to fart at your party but I just can't join this Hughsey the hero /old dog/big dog/top dog love-in.

He sounds like a decent fella / experienced pro to have around the dressing room etc etc but having heard him jabbering on while commentating on Player and trying to impress that female commentator with the annoying voice, he would irritate the hell out of me.

I thought he was possibly our worse player last season and mostly memorable for his super athletic 86 minute warm ups and brylcream slick hairstyle. I groaned out loud when I saw him on the team sheet for Bolton and after 15 minutes thought he should have been dragged off. He was nearly as far behind the play as the ref and that was saying something.

Yes he ended up having three half decent games by keeping it simple and that's to be admired at his age but I would still rather see Hollands or Gower in central midfield and don't see him as the great missing link.

Not slagging him off just saying he ain't Patrick Vieira.

Hughes is a continuity player, he knits it all together in midfield, wins possession and brings everyone into the game. When the opposition has the ball, he protects the back four, breaks up the opposition build-up through midfield and keeps the team organised. Hughes has done a fantastic job since his return and filled a big hole in the central midfield,

    This ^

and this > "To his credit at the age of 35,and after being out for so long, has played three games in a week.Has played very well and its no coincidence that with him in the team we have gained seven vital points.... "

Even only partially fit against Bolton he showed why lightweight posing shirkers like Dale Stephens have no place in the side.

If AH is happy to stay darn sarf I'll ne happy to see him in Charlton red next season. We might not get a full season out of him but in 3 performances in 8 days he has proved his worth unequivocally.

So how do you explain the fact that we won the 6 consecutive games that he played last season & have won on 2 consecutive Saturdays at home now, drawing at a rampant Brighton in between ?

It is no coincidence. It is in part down to his passion & enthusiasm. It's not just his own play. He inspires the others.

agree with SHG but obviously entitled to your opinion
  • He has to be THE definition of a 'limited player'
  • Don't think you always need masses of ability to be a good player. He knows his limitations, does a job and does it very well.
  • I don't give a toss about whether a player is limited as long as they know their limitations and work around them, or to overcome them,. Hughes is no Del Piero or Iniesta or Mascherano, but doesn't pretend to be. Just keep it simple and do the job the manager wants you to do. I much prefer players who will pick a simple pass and keep possession over ones who will constantly attempt 70 yard pinpoint precise long passes... onto the opposition defenders' foreheads.
  • in the leeds win, hughes covered both fullbacks very well. Inside the first 15min alone, hughes was going from touchline to touchline containing the wingers while our fullbacks got forward. He naturally just drops into the defense to keep our defensive lines sorted.
  • After the Leeds equaliser - big windmill arms to the younger players saying "come on, lift yourselves, we're still in this fight".

I'm sure many of you saw it, but have you seen it much at any other games this season ?
Not saying we should play an arm-waver every week, but he obviously brings something to the party.

Gower is 34, so not sure what folk think he is suddenly going to do that will change anything for us !
  • He was fuming last season absolutely fuming about being dropped (he told me as much), not just from the XI but out of the squad all together. A lesser pro would have been straight on the blower to his agent and done one but he has gone through 12 months + of injury at 35, fought back and now he's got the shirt and giving it his all.

    Top top guy.

So he's a "limited player", aged 35 who has played less than 10 games in two seasons at Charlton but he is suddenly a top dog super-hero and I am the one talking bollocks.

Good luck to him. Obviously a decent bloke and pleased to see him have a few decent games but the hero worship is a bit over the top for me for a player of his ability and contribution.

I shall withdraw and allow the love-fest to continue uninterrupted. Enjoy.

You didn't respond to my point. Do you think our impressive results when Hughes plays, are coincidence ?
    Genuine question.
