Andy Hughes

edited August 2012 in General Charlton
What is the deal with Hughes? He was doing a decent job as a holding midfielder last season, then vanished from 2nd Jan onwards, never to be seen again. He's still under contract but hasn't even played in a friendly as far as I can tell. Is he injured? Is he a trouble-maker? Just seems hard to understand.

It's a pity we have accumulated 3 players that SCP doesn't want to use but can't get rid of (Hughes, Hayes and Clarke). Their wages would probably allow us to stretch to another decent signing.

  • Didn't someone say that he is injured?
  • Didn't someone say that he is injured?

    CP said he was

  • Apparently he has a thigh injury, sustained whilst playing golf with his Dad in the summer!
  • Bumped this because I think the bloke deserves some discussion. I think his inclusion versus Bolton surprised a few people, I for one certainly never expected to see him in battle for the Addicks again. I liked him a lot when he was in the team last season. I thought it was when we were at our best and it seems the lay off hasn't taken away the blokes fitness or attitude. He will be 35 before Christmas. Doubt he either currently or would cost a fortune to retain. If Gower also comes in on a free which I think might happen he too would be 35 next season. Captain Fantasic Jackson a sprightly 31. That midfield would have a combined age of 101. Discuss.
  • Thought he was superb against Bolton and we always seem to play better with him in the middle of the park. He is also apparently an incredible character to have in the dressing room.

Personally I'd be happy to see him in every match.
  • Hope he stays. Great character and attitude and has the ability to get players around him to knuckle under and put a shift in.
  • The next manager when Powell decides to take on a new challenge/is given the elbow? Would appear to have the motivational skills at least.

Type of player you need involved with the youth coaching setup (if he isn't already that is).
  • Heard a funny story that one time during his spell out with injury, he sprung out of some bushes wrapped in bandages whilst Powell was taking a training session declaring himself fit! He seems integral to the morale of the current side and his comeback should be used as an example to all in the future who are out long-term injured that with hard work and effort you can get back into a starting XI.
  • very important player because he is selfless.

he knows that his job is to stick in that holding role and that is exactly what he does.

reason he's important to a team like ours is because we work bloody hard for our results with quality thrown in here & there. the players around him know where he'll be and his presence allows other midfielders in particular to recover their positions. on occasions, he may hold play up for that extra half second just by being where he is or having the ability to move left or right to cover others.

much prefer a proper 'holder' to a midfield pair/trio in the middle taking it in turns to get forward/back.

Must admit he didn't set the world alight for me in league one and Wycombe away immediately springs to mind as do the early season cup ties and the Kent Senior cup final at Dartford. However it's not always about what is seen on the pitch and after the first 10 mins on Saturday he did well after such a long lay off and did a good quietly efficient job last night. Tempting to give him one more year but whether the finances allow is another matter.

  • Andy Hughes is our team personified.

In terms of talent, not on the same level as many players in this league, but he makes up for it with commitment and team spirit.

The sort of player that the likes of Harriot and Pritchard will look to for guidance when the chips are down. Plays the game with his head and has great positional sense and allows players around him to be better able to express themselves. It was noticeable how many goals Hollands scored whilst playing alongside Hughes.
Shame he hasn't played more this season as I think we could have been pushing for a play off place.
  • Gets the ball, gives the ball, makes himself available for a return. Too many of the others get it, give it, vanish!
  • He's a massive Leeds fan isnt he?? Going to enjoy his game Saturday no doubt!
  • Interesting to note that Hughes has never been in a losing Charlton team when he has started a game.He has only played half a dozen times but still an interesting fact.
Anyone who listened to his interview on Charlton Live would be very impressed by his attitude and commitment to the club and Chris Powell.
  • A good player - sadly thanks to injury we haven't seen the best of him.

I seem to recall one of the best spells of results last season came when he was playing behind Hollands in midfield, the latter pushed forward and we won several matches by decent margins. Then he got injured...
  • Unselfish, keeps the game simple, good positional player ...... provides the platform and tracking back, that gives team mates the confidence to get forward and perform.

    The Kish role.

    (Ain't that right, Len?)

Didn't get injured, he was dropped for Russell against Udders at home last season, after winning the previous five games. Still a good decision by SCP at the time, as Russell was very good in that game, but was replaced at half -time with injury, Hughes came on in his place..
  • Our best period last season was with Hughes in the side in CM. Our results were if I remember correctly: 4-0, 2-1, 4-0, 5-2, 4-0 (Halifax away) , 1-0 and (for second half) 2-0. So scored 20 and conceded three in six matches .

I walked by the team bus after the Brighton game while they were waiting for some kit to be loaded.
Hughesy was inside joking around with the other players, ruffling their hair and being loud.

It looked a very happy bus.

Also, I noticed as he was substituted he went to the bench and shook the hand of every one of our crew - backroom boys, the lot.

    I like him.

  • Do you remember how pleased scunny fans were to get rid. Horses for courses.
  • Great character to have around. thought he was MOM against Bolton for his verbals alone!"

Hughesy was a cult hero at Leeds.

  • The first 20 minutes against Bolton the game passed him by and I thought CP had made a mistake in bringing him back but a few clattering tackles later he was up for the fight and was a big part in our victory. Great to see him in the starting line-up.
  • So pleased for him that he's making his mark again in a season when we 'd almost forgotten he was still around.

Said to be a fantastic character to have in the dressing room.

Keep on keeping on , young Andy !

    THIS

There are certain players who become part of the 'Fabric of the Club' and in my opinion AH is one of these, a great mentor on and off the pitch to all the academy players and a true gentleman in life, it is a pleasure to see him back on the pitch and I hope he remains part of the club when he eventually decides to hang up his boots...not yet though mr Hughes :)
  • Always been a fan of his and great to see him back.. His cameo in the Christmas vid, plus his Twitter 'banter' with Hamer and Jacko shows exactly what 'extra' he brings to the team.
  • Definitely the sort of person you'd want helping to coach the players, the good cop to Powell's bad cop :-)

Having him (or Russell) in the team last year gave it better balance. Perfect for those battling games where you want to keep it tight and nick a goal...
  • His commentary with Emma was unforgettable - I reckon they would also make a good central midfield pairing.
  • Welcome back. I haven't seen either game but I'll wager you have made our midfield a lot more competitive Mr Hughes
