  • WTF would we want with Wayne Bridge?

Whoever kicked off the rumours and hysteria must be having the biggest giraffe imaginable.
  • blockquote rel="Davali"> how can Brighton pull off a deal for Wayne Bridge and we are not at the races.
    blockquote

We don't want to be another portsmouth

The paper reveals that defender Tal Ben Haim is still earning a staggering £36,000 a week, while the club has 10 players on their books that are costing them a total of £11m a year .

  • What did i miss?
  • Or that we have 2 good left backs.

Bridge was pony at West Ham last year. I'd rather have Wiggins or Evina, let alone both of them. Why covet crap but famous players?

Just a Bridge too far for us. Or perhaps we had burned our Bridges?
  • So it appears in many people's eyes that PV is the hero, fighting for what is right, the only voice of reason in the boardroom. A charlton man. However let's not forget his involvement in some of the worst decision making in our recent history as well, as well as the good times. Perspective. It seems that over the last week emotions have run high and many here are so quick to judge the new regime. PV was part of it but the indications are that he was not central to the new direction in which we are heading. I think we need to stop this PV hero worshipping like he has single handedly saved our club. He hasn't. A good man, a talented leader at times - but like all of us prone to errors of judgement. Let's give Mr Slater some of this respect and get behind the new board.
    Egh??

Or as we used to say Stu.."you WOT?

  • I'm sure Bridge will do very well for Brighton, but we have Wiggins and Evina, two young players who were part of a successful squad last season. Why jeopardise their development by going for a player on massive wages? Whilst Brighton aren't likely to be covering much of his £100k a week, how would a CAFC player on £6k a week who played a big part in promotion last season feel if we bring in some big name who is being paid 15 times as much to play for Charlton (albeit even if CAFC aren't paying that whole salary)?

I think most CAFC supporters are glad to see the club living within their means, investing in youth and young players, and back in the Championship. People thinking about promotion this season should be grateful for what we have. We are a club so nearly in crisis, who were close to administration and points deductions. I'll take a 15th place finish in the Championship next season all day long, thank you very much!

Just relax and let the club get on with it. The current regime hasn't let us down yet. I'm sure we will be competitive. We don't need to sign a huge load of new players, just 3-4 to freshen and strengthen what we have. I don't care if we sign those players on august 31st if that's what needs be. Kermorgant wasn't there for pre-season and soon became a pivotal member of the squad.
  • I'd be more worried about our club if we were signing loan players from the prem on £10k a week.

I think we are all underestimating the strength of our current squad. We my have had a few better individual players during our two years in the championship but I feel we currently have a stronger squad overall currently than in either of those years. My view is that if we added 3-4 quality players to this group we would make the top 6.

Looking at the teams in this division probably every team has a "star" player that is better in his position than what we have but generally I think there are probably only 8-10 squads stronger currently than ours. The majority of these 8-10 all have issues. All three demoted teams are in this group and are all weakening their squads as they try and shed costs or deal with player expectations. Then you have the group that finished in and around the play offs last season. These have either ownership issues (Birmingham, Cardiff), or budget issues (Borough, Hull). Leicester seem to have waken up to the financial reality of the division they are in, which leaves Blackpool who I think will have a good year.

The championship last season from positions 10 to 21 were Brighton, Watford, Derby, Burnley, Leeds, Ipswich, Millwall, Palace, Peterborough, Forest, Bristol City and Barnsley. With our current squad I can see us nestling near the top of this mini group i.e. comfortably in mid table.

Shudders and the Massive are both strengthening, but they are playing catchup on us in any case.

We are right to be concerned about ownership issues and potential infighting at board level and I'm as frustrated as the next fan that we've not added to our squad. But what I think is being underplayed is the fact that we've not lost any of the "dream team" i.e. those that played 30+ games for us last season. A lot of teams that are active in the market in our division are largely active in order to replace first team regulars from last season. We can all point to areas of our team that could do with strengthening, but from our dream team are there many, if any, that will be found majorly wanting in this division? I suppose only time will tell :o)
  • That's a key point. We might not have signed anyone, but neither have we lost any of the key players who were attracting attention last season - Morrison, Solly, Wiggins, BWP, Kermorgant in particular, and also Jackson & Hollands. All of these players would be attractive for other Championship clubs who perhaps pay bigger salaries, and Celtic were linked with Morrison and Yann

Personally as of today I would be happy to start and end the season with the current manager, the current squad and finish 21st. However, that isn't living within our means, it will require funding.

Does that mean something bad has happened?

Which is the point spelt out that I just don't think a number of people are getting, whilst accusing those of us trying to make that view a little clearer of 'hysteria' and 'doom mongering'.

Alright! Just asked a question. I thought things had got better.
  • Sorry, didn't mean to come across that way !

When RE is worried, I worry...
  • I meant, has something else happened to put things back in doubt.
  • when did we come out of the doubt?

might be more a point that in the short term money has been put in to cover costs but that wont last all season.

I would think that it's more likely that any differences at board level can't be resolved or TJ is throwing his weight around regarding player recruitment and CP don't like it

when did we come out of the doubt?
I probably know as little about the inner workings of the club as is possible. I have no contacts.
But I thought in recent days there had been some stabilty (from posts from those in the know and Slater's statement).
I interpreted Airman's latest post as there had been a turn for the worse.

Fair point VM. I wish we knew as all I keep doing is trying to work out what is going on.

    Ah I see. Thanks.

That is only an idea VM makes a good point.

    As cryptic as ever.
  • Sounds like CP is going to have to follow the Curbs text book more closely than we'd have liked... hope he likes bargain hunting!
  • Things were seemingly OK.
Then things became frightening and unthinkable.
Then things got a little bit better.
Now things have got bad again.
..at least thats what I think is going on as of today.
  • Finally people effing get it!
