See this is one of the reasons why we get the reputation we do amongst other fans. Moaning about not being able to go home at 4.45PM on the dot.
You reckon you don't need police protection from Millwall fans. I disagree personally. If they let elderly people out, how is that going to go down with everyone else who can't be let out. Not very well.
This is a huge derby for us considering we rarely play Millwall, and the big talking point is about what time the bloody gates open at the end!!
We rarely play Millwall....what are you on about? Been to their place more times than I can remember. How about yourself son?
Bluddy stupid part was holding us for all that time and then letting our coach out without a police escort (in contrast to the convoluted journey in). Being stuck at the traffic lights outside the home pub was hairy and made a total mockery of all explanations that safety was top of the agenda. Absolutely bloomin' farcical in fact. Hopefully the club will ask for some assurances but there's no way I'm going to miss seeing WSS's demonstration of climbing skills, seriously impressive it was. Also enjoyed the impromptu game of hatball ;-)
What happened to the coaches then? Anything? Or just a few gestures, abuse and taking the piss?
I am certainly no wolly thinking liberal (quite the opposite - right wing Daily Mail reader) but I still think it is an infringment of your civil rights that you are kept behind for 30-45 mins. No other sport or pastime are you not allowed to leave the premises when the entertainment ends. I realise that it is supposed to be for my safety and I have no problems behind for 5-10 mins whilts the old bill make sure anu hoolies have dispersed - but last time we played them it was gone half past 5 when we finally were allowed out.
There weren't any "hoolies" waiting for you last time. It's wrapped up down there nowadays and the only mugs who would be waiting are stupid little kids from Kent who think they're hard who want to pick on an innocent Charlton fan. If you turned round & shouted BOO they'd be on their toes the little scrotes.
The main issue as far as I'm aware is not mixing 3,000 Charlton fans with thousands of Millwall on packed trains going back to London Bridge. Whilst most would be light hearted banter & piss taking, there will be some on both sides who take it too far. Also, they couldn't lock the gates on Millwall for 30+ minutes to let you lot disperse on the next 4/5 trains that were due in at South Bermondsey as that would just piss those off even more. The easiest solution was to wait unti the station was clearer then let you lot go. Not ideal for those who live nearby or have parked, but then as a football I've long got used to the plod making life hard.

You're a different generation, for many of your younger generation Charlton fans we ain't played regularly at all considering your relative success over the past 15 years or so.
It's a shit hole of a place. Both old and new. Been more times than I can remember and victories have been few and far between. We owe them for the 4 - 0 and I wouldn't miss it. As for the fans...well no one likes them.
You mean as a Spanner you've long been used to the plod maklng life hard....there's quite a difference.
Didn't take anyone long to pick up on that....have a read of the FSF women/man on Twitter who deals with cases of plod being unreasonable with football fans up & down the country. Not just with Millwall.
No matter our role in the way the police treat us, some forces manage it a lot better than others & help to prevent rising tensions, whereas some relish it (GMP & SYP being prime examples). No arguments with some of their tactics though.

I've been there many times as well, but hardly recently. We've played them only twice competitively in the last 16 or so years. Regardless of age or generation, I'd deem that to be pretty rare.
Rising tensions ? Nine out of ten clubs don't have rising tensions. The old bill treat your fans with caution precisely because your fans cause at least as much trouble as any football fans in the country.

Suggest you talk to other fans who follow clubs up & down the country. I'm well aware of the perception the police have of us, but I've also dealt with many police forces over the country and some approach us & deal with travelling fans much better than others. If you're completely unaware of the way certain forces like to behave then you must have your head buried in the sand.

A very small number of Milwall pissheads tried to get on the coach and when they couldn't force the coach door open they went to the back of the coach and a pedestrian then alerted the driver to their behaviour. I don't know what they were doing to the coach, I just found their behaviour out of order and threatening. There wasn't a policeman in sight, and although no harm was done, it nevertheless left me a bit shaky.

It's a cliche of course but "You reap what you sow" I've been to dozens and dozens of away games and I have never been treated badly by the police. Perhaps it's because I'm not a snarling, chanting labled up moron.
What Sparrows said about the clearing of the away end makes sense ,I spoke to my mate this morning and he reckons that we would not be treated the same as Palace unless we only took 2,000 . He hates the fact that home fans are often left outside South Bermondsey .
From a risk assessment point of view I can see why home fans would be held back given the location of the station and Millwall's history particularly following the play off with Birmingham ten years ago ,but it grates on them .
I think the problem is Sparrows is that Charlton fans are not used to the sort of heavy policing away from home that would be second nature to Millwall .
Especially over the last three years with the smaller clubs we visited in L1 , I have merrily travelled up and down the country with no hassle whatsoever .
I suspect that the Spanners wouldn't have the same freedom that we have in towns such as Exeter and Yeovil and would be policed heavilly wherever they go .

yeah but it's only banter and come on they had only won 4-0 , salt of the earth , right laugh down the boozer and all that , proper fans

Charlton fans never snarl or chant. See FoD's video for evidence.

Or just very lucky.
Possibly but I doubt that. I think Richards post just above is about right.

I'm not talking about what reputation we have. You pulled my comment about rising tensions & implied only 9 other clubs in the country would ever be dealt with that way. It's not the case.
You're comparing your experiences of Charlton, which are probably in the bottom 10 clubs in terms of threat/risk, with the other 80+ clubs in the league. The stories from that FSF link and numerous other boards, articles etc show that police very often play a big part in stirring things and making things more heated.
I''ve been to places where the local police have treated us with respect, let us have a drink and get on with our day & there's not been any trouble, I've been to other places, just as un-threatening, where police are constantly trying to get you to bite, feed you lies, bully, etc. If you can't see that some methods of policing work better than others then not much point talking.
If we're talking about going Leeds, West Ham, Birmingham etc then I have no complaints with police being in big numbers, restricting our movement etc, but I won't accept them taking their ID numbers off their shoulders and being baton happy & bullying as soon as you've got off the train - that raises tensions.

Sounds like they just wanted a free lift back to Kent.
I think as Addicks most of us have had the odd brush with the law at away games where we as a group feel we've been treated unfairly.....but one has to say you have to think long and hard to come up with more than the odd occasion....we have no reputation to speak of nowadays and I'm honestly struggling to think of an incident where we've been badly mistreated other than at The Toolbox. Cue one or two posters who can come up with something.....but as I say, those occurences are pretty rare. Millwall a few years back being the worst that I (we possibly?), have ever been treated by the Old Bill at an away game. And I simply wont have it happen to me again.....it was disgusting to detain us like that.....not a word of explaination or some idea of when the gates would be opened....absolutely nothing....we were just locked in and had no one to converse with, simply zero information. So this time I want it BEFORE I go there...I don't think that's unreasonable. And finaly I'll say again.....I don't need protecting from a bunch of f'ing Spanners........never have and never will!
i'm gonna eat some prawn sandwiches at millwall fook that for a game of marbles
Probably the best bet oohaah....though there has been trouble in the directors boxes/hospitality areas both at The Old Den & The Valley over the years and I've sort of ended up in it (by proxy I have to say) both times! So you're likely not going to be able to celebrate any goals that we smash in!

The problem was even if you got over the gates further along were still locked
