Fully agree and that's why I've always been fairly relaxed since he took over ...but whether or not he has plans to expand the Valley, I have no idea

I imagine we'll need to consistantly sell out matches before RD thinks about expanding capacity.

Then again, promotion back to the Prem changes all that.

  • Very true
  • The current capacity is adequate for the PL. There is some scope to redevelop the Jimmy Seed Stand. From memory, the overall design of the redevelopment of the ground would be enclosed, that every stand was different, with potential to expand where necessary. Should Charlton buy back the land on Lansdowne Mews or use this money to invest in the academy and the team to bring the fans back?
  • I wonder if future owners/tenants of this property in Landsdown mews realise that there is a large football ground at the bottom of their garden. I say this as I'm sure whoever moves in will start complaining that they have nowhere to park on match days and it can be rather noisy at times.

Noisey? It's behind the East stand.
Oh yeh, forgot about A block.

Not sure the two issues are one or the other.
On the valley : I can understand that the issue of redeveloping the ground, either Jimmy Seed or the corner infill is not a top priority at the present moment in time. The issue becomes one when we do enter the higher league. First of all Charlton have to buy back the land, or at least get planning permission for either of the proposals I have mentioned. Again I repeat according to the planning officer at the time..... Jessica Li ( hope I spelt her name correctly) Charlton would be unlikely to get planning permission again, for the renewal on the plans they had submitted, and been granted, as the planning laws would require significant modifications. Of course the developer may be prepared to accept an offer on the land?
( which when I last heard had Japanesse knot weed on it!) Charlton could, and may for all I know have ideas of submitting a new planning application on the Jimmy seed stand, with appropriate costings. But there are a few obstacles there to clear. The financial probably being the most significant.
On the Academy: The Academy is a joint application, and various funding is, and had been secured for this. Of course if plans are submitted, different from those approved ( as enquired) then investment from CAFC will depend on what those plans are. As RBG have denied any revisions to the plans as passed has not been submitted, let alone passed/approved ( at the time of the FOI request) we shall have to wait and see what RD changes, (if any) the two parties submit. Of course the Community Trust may wish to revise the plans?.

The current capacity was adequate during our last stint in the Premier League. As things stand only 3 teams in the Premier League have a capacity less than 25,000 so the way I see it all depends on RD's plans. Would he be happy for us to potentially yo-yo between the Premier League and Championship with our current capacity this would be adequate to do so or would he be looking to secure a long term future for us in the Premier League? In which case we would need to then be looking at a 40,000 stadium which would be currently the 9th biggest capacity in the Premier League. That's before you take into consideration West Ham moving to the Olympic Stadium and Tottenham building a new ground, both of whom happen to be London clubs. Once work is completed on both grounds 40,000 would push us down to having the 11th biggest capacity. That's before Everton consider ground expansion or a new stadium too which if happened would nudge a 40,000 capacity down to 12th place. And when you consider the teams all currently with 40,000+ capacity are stable Premier League clubs barring Newcastle and Sunderland the odd year in the Championship and usually bounce back while receiving parachute payments it would seem 40,000 would be a requirement for a long term stay in the Premier League.

So in short i'd say The Valley for now is fine but if we want a long term sustainable future in the Premier League then 40,000 it is but all depends on RD's vision for the club.
  • I don't think we'll ever need 40,000. Of course, there will be the odd game where we could sell that number, but they'll be very rare.

The East Stand boxes and corporate facilities do look a bit inadequate, a main driver towards the second tier was to build much better corporate facilities

That was one part of the design I didn't quite get, it looked as though the East second tier would only hold a few rows, now the East Stand boxes could be improved, i've been in one before back in 2001 so if the East was ever going to be worked on, why not knock down the boxes and just add the extra rows of seats to the current design so it stays as one big stand and then build new boxes again at the top?
