If a referee does not influence the outcome of the game, what's the point of having him ? He has the most influence ! If you wanted to fix a game, who is the most obvious candidate to approach ?
How about the keeper? But not Bruce Grobelaar who was entirely innocent of such a terrible accusation:-)

Nope, because even if the goalkeeper throws them in his own net, the ref can still disallow it :-)
I'm sure Chelsea, or whoever won the league that year had similar, or worst decisions go against them around that time. Strange how they didn't get relegated...........oh, hang on, they'd won enough of their preceding 30 odd games for it not to matter!
Ashtray I respect your general stance, to try and stick up for a group which gets a disproportionate amount of unfair criticism. However I'm bothered by your argument that nothing should be done to help referees do an even better job, thus reducing the number of bad decisions which have consequences. Your argument seems to be, we all get some things wrong, live with it. Sorry, that argument won't wash at a professional level. Take airline pilots. Highly trained, specific personality and mindset, expected to make cool key decisions under extreme pressure. Yet all the time technology is being introduced to help them, to reduce the number of accidents caused by pilot area. And it works. The same approach is needed for professional football, and referees should welcome it. Hell , they already do it in rugby.
I don't think I said that Prague. I'm in favour of tech, but sceptical about how to apply it. I just think blame would shift to the fourth official.

Just looked it up, it was Man Utd as it happens, and if they did drop two points due to an inexcusable error from a linesman, I think it would almost certainly have been the worst decision that went against them that season, don't you?
I will just have to accept that you believe "kick in the nuts" results like that have no psychological affect on players, staff and fans of football clubs. Others can make their own minds up.
Yeah, you're right. I remember that same season up at Everton I think it was, we should have had a throw in on the half way line but the ref gave it the other way. We could have scored from that possession and I reckon we could have got a point, which would have been the springboard we needed to go on and win the league.

I am now watching Chel v F'Ham. Meireles just committed the season's most cynically blatant trip and all he got was a little heart to heart with the referee Mr Clattenburg ... personally, I can forgive referees their mistakes, I can't however tolerate their 'big team favourtism' and lack of consistency

We was robbed...
Seems there is an unwritten rule that you can clobber the hell out of Jann and nothing is done
That's unfair on the lino on the East stand side. He was 14 and had a note from his mum to prove it.
