Just had a call from a mate up there. He reckons that from his viewpoint Hollands made a stupid challenge and probably deserved to go. He said their sending off was harsh, as was Wagstaff's.
He created a problem for himself by brandishing a few early cards then to be consistent he kept going with inevitable results. Steve Froggat on the radio commentary after Hollands was sent off said that it wouldn't be the last red and he was right.
Long discussion on the radio now from the two commentators....the game was played in good spirits with no agro between the two sets of players.......the number of cards was totally out of proportion to the spirit of the players and the game in general.
With the pitch as it was some common sense must come into his decisions, oh sorry he's a ref common sense doesn't apply.
Difficult really as the same people that call for common sense are the same people that call for consistency. Refs can't win.
Sounds like he shouldn't have sent Wagstaff off (although Sky say otherwise). Sounds like he got everything else about right. I trust Steve Froggatt's view above those of our own fans, players or manager as there will always be subjectivity.
Maybe he's the type of ref that applies the letter of the law, but that's his prerogative. It's up to the players to play within those laws, then there wouldn't be so many cards.
Ashtray. Just a question. Aren't you the one that sticks up for refs every game
I wouldn't say I stick up for them as such. I just think people get things out of perspective and fail to acknowledge their obvious bias as a fan of one of the teams involved. I am the voice of reason.

When both sets of fans, the players and managers seem to have fault with the referee I think it's reasonable to suggest that the fault lies with his officiating. Still pissing off both sides does demonstrate that he was consistent.
Leaving aside todays game, there are just far too many bookings and sendings off these days. More often than not it ruins the game as a spectacle for the supporters. Personally, I'm getting sick of it
Those are pretty shocking statistics re: cards etc. I can see where AshTray is coming from but that is just ludicrous. From what the Beeb said both sets of fans/players/managers were livid at different points. You can be shite without being biased.

YEs, but as I say, all those you mention have a vested interested in the game. The impartial outsiders watching have all pointed blame at the players and the pitch.
He probably is more picky than most refs and we all come across people like that in our jobs, but as I say, it's his perogative to apply the rules to the letter. His performance won't make the news outside the context of the game and he won't be criticised by his bosses because all he did was apply the laws of the game as they are written.
He hasn't affected the result - as refs don't in 99.9% of occasions - which is my point 99.9% of the time where refs are concerned.

Yes, me too. The rules have changed, but the players just fail to change the way they play. It's so frustrating.

You have also told us that you are a ref !
PS Kettle is inconsistent. He's always blown hot & cold.
Yes Clem, but I imagine Chelsea had the more clear cut chances throughout the game and, let's face it, the result went to form. There are always going to be mistakes made. What can you do? People say the refs in div 1 are bad, but thesse are mistakes by premier league officials. If you've run the line you will know that unless you have eyes like Marty Feldman, seeing the moment when the ball is kicked and the last line of the ddefence simultaneoulsy is impossible. They just have to do their best.

Trevor Kettle's refereeing stats this season: 19 games 86 yellows 8 reds! Ridiculous!

A competant referee doesn't hide behind his notebook.

Seems most people rate him on there as, erm .......incompetant.
Anybody who's lived in Scotland will know what l'm on about.
Wagstaff decision absolutely laughable.
Froggatt doesnt believe he will be able to find his car.
