  • Just home after a bit of a treck.First game Ive been at since Sheff Utd away and the difference was night and day. Where has the pass and move ball on the deck gone.Twice someone in front of goal looked for a nothing pass instead of taking responsibility and hitting a shot.To me that looked like two third division teams having a crack at each other. The ref was also third division, felt he had parked his car somewhere that Huddersfield officials had to let him out of to get home.It maybe nerves but if we do go up there need to be some changes.Plenty of honest endeavor but a few that are not keen on getting stuck in.Even we cant blow it,can we?
  • I think some on here need to take a chill pill. When I read the negative comments I have to wonder what would be posted if we were 9 points outside the playoffs instead of 9 points clear of third.

    Keep the faith!
    Amen!

Not sure what has gone wrong, but over the past five games only Orient, Bury and Exeter in the entire division have taken fewer points than us.

There are 21 pts left to play for and we are 8 pts clear. Sounds like a near-impregnable position - except that we've taken only four pts from the last 15. Wednesday and Huddersfield (clubs we all said were insane to sack their managers), are both hitting form under new bosses. Shef U will be only six pts behind if they beat bottom club Chesterfield on Wednesday.

I think we will still scrape our way over the line. But anyone who isn't now feeling nervous has clearly not been supporting CAFC for very long!
  • we're doomed!

soon to be 6 points clear. anyone else feeling nervous? (i know i am. yellow belly wuss)

lets hope our new home form holds out.
its annoying when we could of sorted this league out by now but that aint our way.

    average game.
sending off obviously didn't help us. if we had the full eleven we probably would of got a draw. not that either team shined.
  • If one thing has happened, blind panic has set in. Everyone in this league has had ropey runs, including the suicide squad appointed Champions and runners up from Sheffield, and the play off winners Huddersfield.

The thing is, all those who went seems to be of the mind that we played alright, got the rough end of the key decisions, and a draw would have been a fair result, and that with the same application we'll get results to win the league and get out of the division.

If you want to be nervous, then fine, be nervous, just don't sit there edgy next Saturday, and then get on the players backs after 20 minutes. This is a good side, who will get us up, but yeah, the results aren't coming in the last 4 or 5 games, but they will get back on it on Saturday. The Sheffield clubs and Huddersfield with have the odd weird result between now and May 5th.
  • Got back about an hour or two ago.

Apart from Hamer's save from Rhodes early on and the penalty, neither keeper had anything to do. I expected it to be tight and tense but it really was a very poor and disappointing game of football, with very little quality on show.

Huddersfield had the edge and just about deserved it - put bluntly, we just didn't do enough to take anything from the game and looked nothing like league leaders. Lots of honest endeavour but no fluidity and absolutely no end product.

I've no complaints about the penalty ( clever play from Roberts ) and I was told afterwards that Russel kicked out at their guy on the floor, in which case he had to go. However, the ref really was an extremely irritating "homer", which just served to compound a frustrating afternoon. I was able to offer him my personal congratulations at the end of the game as I was sitting just by the home dugout and the tunnel ( with a mate who supports Huddersfield and another who lives up there ). We all need our scapegoats.

On the positive ( non-football ) side, I enjoyed the pre- and post-match beer in "The Head of Steam", the free Rugby League Museum in the George Hotel and the statue of "Darling Harold" in the Square. Alas, the game itself will not live long in the memory but at least we have given ourselves a very substantial cushion and I expect us to get something out of all our remaining games. It will be ok.
  • It's always the people who were excusing the last few years (the worse in my lifetime of supporting CAFC - since '89) of dross with their rose-tinted arrogance who immediately jump on people's backs. Anyone who's been on this site more than a couple of years just will have ignored you/ stopped taking you seriously a long time ago.
  • The loanees have been brought in for cover. It makes sense.

I know it's in the heat of the battle as it were but Russell getting sent off today was inexcusable imo. That, more than anything, lost us the game today.
    did same vs. Bury too

  • Hope Powell now puts Hughes back into midfield, as I think he should have four games back. We need all the experience, nous and commitment that we can muster in the run in.

2006/7-We're not going down from the prem, don't panic -we were relegated
    2007/8-We're still fifth, don't panic- finished 11th
2008/9-We'll stay up , pardew was what's holding this team back, don't panic- we finished last by a country mile
2009/10-We'll win the play offs, if we don't make the automatics, don't panic-play off failure
2010/11-as if we're in that much financial trouble /We're in the play offs/ just outside the playoffs , don't panic- we nearly went into administration but for the takeover/ we finished 13th
2011/12- we'll still win the league/ go up automatically dont be a yellow belly, don't panic

Some people would rather stick fingers in their ears and say la la la la and refuse to remove the shit from their eyes than open them and see what's under their nose
    FACT

And for the record I thought for the majority of last season we'd get into the play offs and we will get promoted this season

And just cos people offer the opinion that if our current form continues we could fook it up does not mean that when they're at the game they're not getting behind the team , I'm pretty sure any freak that spends time on here is passionate for their team at the ground

  • I thought Huddersfield body language at start said they were really nervous and were there for the taking. Down to ten men we looked more likely to nick one. We had some decent possession without enough domination. Opened them up only a few times, but always by passing, not hoofballing. Draw or narrow win for us definitely would have been a fairer result. Not worried about character of team, we just need to show more than odd glimpses of quality during the 90 minutes. BWP rarely picks up any second ball from hoof tactics, can't understand why we persist.
Didn't expect a win but in the end dissapointed we got nothing and cos not much went our way and we seldom looked like we were the losing team. As CP would say "move on".
  • I love this place come in for a pick me up leave as suicidal as steve

For the record we will win the next 2 games 3- 1 and 2 nil what will you be Saying then

  • I bet Sheff u will be feeling the heat now the deluded have leapfrogged them. Their game with Chesterfield on tues might not be a forgone conclusion.
  • Some people got well ahead of themselves a couple of weeks ago, thinking it was job done. Older supporters know that nothing is ever that straight forward with Charlton.
It wasn't last night's defeat that is the cause of our nervous state, it was the two home defeats. The draw at Scunny was ok and then the good home win against Yeovil.
So putting aside those two home defeats, our form in the last three has been OK.
It's too soon to panic, if we keep playing as we have in the last three we should be OK.
But we need to get back to basics and Powelly needs to stop meddling and play players in their best positions and go for experience and steel. It's not the time to start trying to replicate the attractive football that we were playing early in the season. It's time for the battlers and the experienced to get us over the finish line.
  • If the ref had done his job, would the outcome have been different, the answer is often know but yestreday was clearly yes. When you realise he is from Yorkshire, well the league has to look at themselves!
  • It was a match beyond belief, the referee got one decision right and that was the penalty, other wise if he had played in blue and white it woulod not havre been inaccurate.

Russell had almost an excellent game, but his mistake up field resulted in him giving away the penalty and he is too experienced to have reacted in the way he did, although a tv view would be appreciated.

Although neither side fashioned many opportunities it felt that we had much the greater share of play, but Huddersfield always looked dangerous in our third of the field.

Our team were superb in adversity, play wit this intensity for the rest of the season and the only way we will play them next season will be if they win the play offs.

Shit happens and today it was in black
Completely agree, I've already said my bit on this game but one thing that struck me this morning is that the whole of Huddersfield were scared stiff of our team, the injury feigning, wasting time and whistles from the crowd. Huddersfield had a game plan and it worked, that plan was to bully us out of our comfort zone, they did that but I can't see CP allowing that to happen again. With Yann back to health (what is wrong with him?) and JJ in the team we shall do it, it is just up to us to keep supporting as we did yesterday.

  • I always try to be objective in my comments but reading some of the stuff on here and witnessing how your fans reacted at the final whistle, some of you seem to live in a different reality. I can understand your frustration to a degree because your lads have clearly gone off the boil but to place the blame for an average performance at the door of the referee is wide of the mark. I'll admit the you could be left thinking the referee allowed us the rub of the green at times but in my view, the 50/50 challenges went to us because we looked more determination to play the ball rather than the man.

We weren't spectacular yesterday by any means but compared to how we've been playing lately there was a renewed determination and desire. Apart from the chance near the end your lads created very little in fact. Even so I commented to my mate that Charlton were one of the better teams we've played this season. You looked very well organised and showed a few glimpses of what might follow, in fact I feared that in the second half you'd open up and show us some serious attacking intentions. That didn't materialise and while its true the sending off totally disrupted your game you can't deny he deserved it for retaliation. I'll admit Novak was lucky to say on the pitch after his push on Russell and one of your players had done the same we'd have been screaming for him to 'walk' too.

It might not have been the football spectacle we'd all hoped for but it wasn't short of excitement. Your fans did you proud by creating a great atmosphere and that always spurs that little bit extra from the Galpharm faithful.

Good luck form now on! See you next season - hopefully!

So by your own admission the ref gave you, rather than us, most of the 50/50 decisions and he should also have sent off Novak!
I'll add to that the fact that Kay should have been on a yellow by the time he chopped down Russell for his first half assault on Wagstaff. That seems to be the general view.
But Charlton fans have no right to blame the ref? That doesn't make sence. Playing with one player less away from home does make a big difference, as does having most decisions given against you. But hey, we're used to it.

  • carefull Oohaah or Off It will be round with his baseball bat!
  • People moaning about people moaning.....dont get much muggier than that. Why can't people be concerned ffs.
    Are you moaning about that?
  • If Kaye had received a booking first half for his tackle on Wagstaff, he would have been unlikely to clatter Russell second half, and he would have had to reign in his 'enforcer' role to legitimate tackles, Russell would then have not been put in a position to react.

The referee was also soft on Kaye in that Russell was tackled from behind, that is outlawed as well as Lee Novak pushing Russell to the ground. So if Russell was to be sent off, Novak and Kaye should have gone as well. In the European championship, x3 players would have been sent off in that incident, if Kaye had been on the pitch after the first half tackle.

The way that Kay, rolled around as well clutching his face, was ridiculously out of proportion to what happened to him.

It is a shame when referees completely ruin a game by inept and bad referring. There may have been some better football played as well.

What goes around, comes around. Charlton will get the rub of the green and benefit from poor refeering decisions before the seasons out.

I am reassured that we have enough determination in the squad to get sufficient points for promotion.

Lets get behind the team for the Orient game. One last good sequence of results and we can enjoy the end of the season with a deserved promotion.

  • I was pleased to see Daryl Russell, say he felt bad for the sending off yesterday on Twitter.

Good, to see that he is able to take responsibility and show that he cares. Good response. Players make mistakes, and thats fine, because we all do, it is how you respond to the mistakes that is important.

    Well done for that.

Some thoughts on yesterday (in no particular order)

    1. The referee was absolutely horrendous - the drop-ball after Kay's lunge on Wagstaff was a disgrace, it would have been a red card in the PL or at a UEFA match, to not even have a free kick was laughable; every 50/50 went their way; there was a nailed-on clear penalty for a foul on Hollands after Wiggins' late free kick completely ignored (bottom corner of screen on FLS highlights last clip of our match); how was Novak not sent off for violent conduct for his two-handed shove on Russell

    2. Anthony Kay behaved like an absolute moron in both of the two incidents of controversy

    3. Definite penalty, Russell gave the ball away when we were exposed and then left his leg there, of course their fella is going to go over it

    4. Russell I'm afraid should not be playing for the club again regardless of how apologetic he might be, he will have spent 7 games suspended this season from 2 entirely preventable incidents and is a liability. He is also prone to calamitous lapses in concentration. Goodbye.

    5. This long ball style we seem to have adopted is absolute garbage and it most certainly does not work without Kermorgant, we made absolutely zero effort to modify our game for Hayes' involvement and zero effort to get the ball down and play. Unfortunately either Powell's tactics or our execution yesterday were well below par.

    6. Wiggins has gone completely off the boil in respect of his defensive qualities.

    7. Wagstaff unfortunately is simply not good enough with his decision-making or his delivery on a consistent enough basis, he had 4 or 5 opportunities yesterday to get quality into the box or shoot himself and cocked it up every time. Against quality opposition you need to seize the moment and most of our promise was along the right and we just did not get end product.

    8. Hollands was immense and Stephens made a difference when he came on with his passing.

    9. Dispel any myths communicated from Huddersfield about them deserving to win and controlling the game. We were away from home at a very solid well-organised side without several key players (most felt in my opinion with no Green, Jacko or Kermorgant for set-pieces). We had ten men for 37 minutes including injury time. We had 54% possession, one less shot (bearing in mind they had a penalty) and more corners. Apart from picking the ball out of the net and a great save from an early header, Hamer was sat in his deck-chair. We were as fluent as we have been in weeks in the last half hour with ten men. Huddersfield edged a scrappy game so fair play to them but we deserved to nick a point particularly with how we dealt with the sending off.

    10. The conduct of that police officer pushing that young woman up stairs after the final whistle and moving to strike her was absolutely despicable and I hope he is reported and punished.

In spite all of the above it is well in our hands and will be for at least another fortnight. If we win our 4 home games and park the bus away from home we are champions END OF. Forget the records and the stats, let's just get the job done.

    COYR
  • I'm not making excuses here, I can see why you feel the ref favoured us but apart from that Kay tackle in the first half his 50/50 decisions didn't influence the game that much and the sending off was a dead cert! I do find it strange that some of you thought we're a physical side, with a 'game plan' especially to upset your play because if I'm honest, I thought your lads 'put it about' quite a bit, particular in the first-half. We hardly ever worry about the opposition at home, we just try to play our normal game. The only think I'd say is we had a renewed desire, probably because we were playing the top of League One team. As I've said, we weren't at our best football wise either and when you played your passing game you looked like a very good side but it was far too rare an occurrence yesterday...And that's why we ran out winners.
