Yes some people are too negative, but it could be argued that some people are too positive, as shown by some of the score forecasts before the Notts County game! We're having an excellent season, but not so good that anyone making any constructive criticisms should get stoned as a disbeliever.
As long as the arguments have some degree of coherence, and aren't just so and so is crap or so and so if better than Messi, then boards do need some degree of disagreement.
Fans who have never played in goal before and know nothing about keeping, slating an up and coming keeper........people should take it with a pinch of salt and perhaps even smile at it. Yes, it's a Forum and people have opinions. The opinion that count, however, are at the training ground and in the dug out.
Interesting thought Man About Town although I did actually play in goal and as it happens my Dad was one of Sam Bartrams deputies when he was first at the Club.
However, if we follow your thinking what is the purpose of this Forum ? Are we here only to endorse the managements decisions ? Sounds a bit Mao Tse Tung to me.
And it sounds to me As if people like whingeing for whingeing's sake.....blame culture is never pretty. CP and the coaching staff will sort it out.......meanwhile I will carry on with my pinch of salt and have a little smile at the whingers.
NOOOOOOOO! Grapevine is one of the best things about this site in recent months, what a shame (
Spot on, Rothko.
I haven't always agreed with everything Grapevine 49 has posted - but always found his posts thought provoking and well reasoned; he certainly helped lift the level of discussion on this forum.
If he decides not to post again, I for one will miss his contribution. I hope he will reconsider.
It is with great regret that I too must publicly announce my reluctant withdrawal from Charlton Life after 72 years of loyal online support.
It is very tragic that over the last season far too many Charlton fans on this forum have become just overly optimistic, cheerful and generally positive.
Too many times I have read silly talk of "the championship", "promotion" and "winning the league". There are even a hard core minority who seem to think that Chris Solly is a quite a good full back. If it's not amusing anecdotes about away victories in some remote crap-hole of the UK its an affectionate comment about Chris Powell and his latest suit.
Quite frankly it disgusts me.
This offensive language is effectively inciting football hatred and in my view the organisers of this site may be vulnerable to legal action from hardcore pessimists groups (grumpybasterds.org and miserableoldgits.com).
Anyone would think we were 10 points clear at the top if the League.

How you can describe my reasonably worded argument as whingeing I will never know. Perhaps you should check on it in your Little Red Book.
Incidentally Man About Town, the first 30 marks on another thread awarded total 120, an average of 4/10. Do you really think that my comments were so unreasonable ?
Supporting Charlton has bought me loads of pain over the years and given me plenty to moan about! I would hope that our supporters are thick-skinned enough to laugh at the numerous setbacks and enjoy the rare moments of success.
Most people on here talk bollocks to some extent and I include myself in this but it does serve as an outlet for people's frustration.
If you want real negativity listen to how pathetic the fans are of some of the bigger prem clubs if they actually lose a game.
If there seems to be a lot of whinging, moaning and negativity on this site (and other similar ones) it might be because dissatisfaction has more causes than happiness. As Tolstoy (nearly) said, all happy fans are alike but an unhappy fan is unhappy in his own way.
Back to Granpa's original point (if I can remember it) I think it is a bit naive to think that Saint Chris can just step up the microphone at a press conference just after a home hammering and say..
"Yes I thought Ben Hamer had a crap game and lets face it, he was the main reason we lost. I brought him to this club and put great faith in him but it turns out he is complete rubbish and should pursue an alternative career at the earliest opportunity. I pay him a bloody fortune and even had to take his agent out to dinner twice (and he is a bigotted old bore by the way) and Hamer keeps performing like a harpooned dolphin on acid. Its pathetic quite frankly and I can assure you he will be dropped for the next game. In fact, I would rather put my pet cat in goal against Scunthorpe than put my faith in that imbecile."
He might be thinking it but it tends not to be what club managers say at live media conferences or to build team loyalty and motivation..

(Bit late for panto season).
I agree on the one hand and not on the other.

For 40 days and 40 nights you will suffer torment, until ye emerge chastened unto the light of promotion gained in the name of Saint Christopher.
