Sorry Chris I have to disagree.

CP has done a terrific job for us this season, and he's a lovely guy. I have to disagree however with what he was saying after Tuesday's game that Ben Hamer is a very, very good goalkeeper. I understand that he was trying to build the lads confidence, but what Ben is in my opinion is a young man who still has a lot to learn about his job. I said in January that we should find an experienced goalkeeper, perhaps at the end of his career to take us to the end of the season on loan. No more Mister nice guy please Chris, pick the team with your head, and not with your heart.

  • Think hamer has saved us more points then he's lost us this season
  • Possibly Beckboy, but right now his nerves must be in pieces. In my opinion CP would be kinder to give him a rest and give Sullivan his chance.
  • Sorry Granpa I have to disagree.................

I think for his age and for this level, he's a very good keeper although I'll admit I was concerned on tuesday against Colchester before we'd even kicked off as he was standing in the goal constantly rolling his injured ankle, confirming to me that he wasn't fit. With hindsight I'd say he was still nursing his injury on saturday.

As the season has progressed I think he's grown in confidence but that was evidentley lacking in the last two games. We have a very competent keeper on the bench and if Hamer isn't fully fit come Saturday, we can't afford to risk him becoming a liability (and come to think of it, the same goes for Jackson).
  • He has pulled off some really class saves this season and kept us in matches that we have gone on to win....his distribution is outstanding, nearly always picks out a red shirt, and sets us off on attacks.

This, plus swap Cort for who Taylor needs a rest after his showing on Saturday. He was as culpable as Hamer for 3 of the goals IMO.
  • I think any more Hamer house of horror shows and its got to be sullivan. Powell is not afraid to drop out of form players so I would expect sooner rather than later if he can't turn it round
  • Nothing wrong with praising Hamer and trying to give him some confidence even if some fans dont agree with him, Fergie is a master of it.

I trust Powell and hopefully once we stumble over the line I am fairly hopeful he has his eye on a better bet for next season, bloody hope so anyway.

Unfortunately that still has to be 'if' we stumble over the line.
  • I think it's important that CP supports his players publicly what he says in private is between him and the player involved. For what it's worth I think Hamer is currently going through a confidence crisis that he needs to work out himself with help from the coaching staff. He is very young for a keeper, has had a good season but after Saturday could probably use a rest for a few games. Hopefully by losing his place he will get motivated and more determined which will only make him a better player.

Loss of confidence affects your ability to make decisions which is critical for a goalkeeper on top of that an uncertain Goalie then creates an uncertain defence so at this point in the season with it all still to play for that has to be restored. I am sure he will come good but right now he needs to be dropped...sorry guys it's a hard game.
  • I reckon Granpa is spot on, not specifically about Hamer but with the team as a whole. For me, SCP needs to use his squad more. Players need to know that if they don't perform well there are other guys waiting in the wings who will come into the squad if necessary. Up until now this has rarely been needed but we're at the sharp end of the season now and head needs to rule heart.

  • I think Hamer will be a top keeper and probably end up in the Prem.
  • I don't think it would hurt the team to give him a rest, but I worry about what it would do to his confidence if he gets dropped. It might make it harder to bring him back in.

This...... but he's nowhere near ready or experienced enough yet.
All keepers go through occasional bad spells.

Agree, Dave. Confidence is everything to a player.
If you've got it, you perform. And if it deserts you .........

A player is only human, not a character on a computer game.

Also a very good point that a manager should support his individual players publicly - although no reason not to condemn a dreadful team performance as a whole.
  • Is Pritchard injured?
  • A keeeper is not like an outfield player. Confidence is built up over a long period of time. You cannot just drop them for a few matches. You decide on your best keeper, then stick with them until it gets really bad. Hamer may have his ups and downs but he doesn't hide - he's proactive rather than reactive so if he gets his decisions wrong they are more obvious and that's more likely with a young keeper. Hamer should stay in the team.
  • no way hamer will end up in the prem, championship yeah but he is far too arrogant for my liking when he is nothing special.
  • The problem on Saturday seemed to me to be that the defenders didn't trust Hamer, passing it (very dangerously sometimes) across to each other rather than back to him to collect. That said Taylor played as badly as I have ever seen him play, and Morrison certainly wasn't on top form so they must take some responsibility here.
  • didnt ross worner get player of the month? maybe let him go to quick.
  • Couldn't disagree with Granpa more, and am very glad you are not my manager!

  • He's 22/23 no shit hes still learning FFs

    Sullivan ? God forbid

  • I like Hamer and think he will make a very good goalkeeper

His confidence may be a bit iffy at the moment but it's up to the defence and midfield to defend properly in the next couple of games and let him get it back
  • Matt Taylor didn't help at the weekend, and I don't think He's 100% fit, the ankle injury from Bournemouth is still an issue
  • Like Ledge said, I've never been hugely impressed by Sullivan, either, when I've seen him.

    This.

It happens to every team, especially at this time of the season ...... key players suffering lingering niggles that haven't time to heal and playing on with injuries, thanks to pain killing injections, etc.

They still play a valuable role in the team, but mobility and sharpness suffers.

To be honest, I don't think much of either Hamer or Sullivan. Hamer has great distribution and for that alone I would keep him in the team - as for any saves he has made this season.......I doubt they would fit into a 10 second montage. As I sit in the East Stand I can't rerally comment about whether he should have saved the opening goals from the last 2 home games, but I do remember a certain addick-loving goalkeeper who is now plying his trade in the North East who got pelters every time he let one in from 25 yards, and I'm sure Saturday's opener wasn't that hard to stop.
  • Unbelievable. Truly unbelievable.

    I'll go along with this.
  • Someone hit the nail on the head earlier with the fact he has saved us far more points than not.

His distribution is class, he is a bit shaky at crosses but he is learning. Good player and can't see the need to drop him in a panic.
