Questions for Powell

  • I wonder how many people asking about why Clarke wasn't brought on are the same ones calling him pony across various other threads? I doubt he would have added anything differnt to the team that was out there and that's why he wasn't brought on. Looking at our bench only Waggy is a player you'd bring on to really get at them and we'd already made that change

Clarke needs to play. He proved he can score for fun at Chesterfield - 9 in 14 and with a much inferior supply source. Attitude may be his Achilles Heel. Players need to play to be sharp - just look at Hernandez against Bilbao - classic case of confidence destroyed by lack of play. Why not try 442 with Clarke & BWP up front?

The problem with starting the game like that is that you are taking a few risks and settling down slowly hasn't done us any harm up until now. Having said that, I think County were a team that we needed to have more of a go at from the off. Some teams are going to sit back and you can afford to be a bit careful.

With the lads tiring and County spoiling (as is their right) I think we needed to freshen things up with 20 to go. I'd have taken off a defender for Clarke and brought Russel on for JJ to inject a bit of energy in the middle. I think County had decided to keep us out so wouldn't have been too great a risk although Chrissy was clearly looking on building on a 2-4 confidence wise and didn't want a 5 or 6er against us for the damage it could do down the line!

I'd very much like to know whether the thought of next season is unsettling some players. I've been pondering my observation that the players who I feel pretty sure will play for us in the Champs are doing reasonably OK, but the others have dropped off significantly. It's a funny and rather unique job really, a player works really hard, helps to get us promoted but the consequence is that the player may end up sidelined or have to search for a new job next season. Surely it must have an effect both on individuals and the squad?
  • Doesn't seem to get subs right enough? We all make the perfect decisions when it hasn't happened. I agree that most managers seem to be much too cautious about changing early in the second half, especially when the game pattern isn't right. Wasn't at the match but from what I've seen of his subs, they're alright.
  • Have commented on other threads about how fit the players have been this season.

However, I wonder about JJ. Has he been rushed back too soon? He seems to be walking through games rather than running.7

Is Ben Hamer's ankle 100% too.

That just doesn't make any sense in my opinion I am afraid. Whether people think he is not good enough is one matter. That Powell bought him but didn't use him in a situation when we needed to have a right go and get goals back is another. Whether people rate him or not his job is to score goals.

stilladdicted - wise words, indeed! I've been saying that very thing about my local Club, Ipswich Town for several seasons.
Stopped going because of it and just recently they have had a decent run to get themselves out of relegation battle.
I thought about this issue only yesterday on the train home from London (I was not at the game, as much as I was itching to get there!) and the other school of thought is that hopefully a lot of the players are improving under Powell and his team and would like to test themselves at the next level.
But I think, in reality, you are bang on the money - several of the players know in their hearts and minds that it will likely turn out to be a bridge too far.
Also, must be difficult to know how much pressure to put on the accelerator when you are 13 points clear.

I'm more interested in why SCP didn't feel that having some fresh legs on the pitch when many of the team were clearly exhausted would have been a good idea.

Am I allowed to ask that? I've not managed a team I'm afraid. I think the admins should perhaps mention this prerequisite when you sign up for the site. I also didn't realise that Off_it is Sir Alex Ferguson, still you learn something everyday...

If he can score 9 in 14 at Chesterfield, one would have thought that he could do equally as well with a better team behind him. Of course, CP knows whether Clarke is the right man to play alongside BWP in a 442, should they play that formation.

  • Defeats can be valuable if lessons are learnt.

The midfield has been lacking energy for the last few games. The game was lost yesterday in midfield. Jackson may be carrying an injury. Isn't it the case that both Dale Stephens and Danny Hollands have new babies in the house ? Is it any surprise if they are getting a bit tired ? Dale Stephens in particular off the pace.

Why no changes after Colchester ? Hughes may be injured, which is a pity, but there is Pritchard and Russell who can do a job alongside if necessary.

Chris Powell still needs to improve on timings of substitutions and maybe consider tactical changes. After the penalty appeals went down, the team went flat and Notts County broke up the game. Another substitution on 70 mins could have been tried. Darryl Russell in midfield or Leon Clarke up front.

If neither of those players were deemed right for the job, why are there on the subs bench ? It would have given them both an opportunity to stake their claim.

Lessons - better use of squad and substitutions

I know the management lark is not as easy as all that, I hope CP can develop these skills.

If the energy in the squad can be maintained and the team works hard, we can win the league. No re runs of 1980/81.
  • Think we've got to take into account
    1) we had an Incredible amount of games in a short period player were bound to start getting jaded and or have some bad games

    2) this is powell's 1st full season as a manager he's still learning so will make mistakes how he reacts to them is what counts for me

    3) we're top by 10 Points - 7 if SU win game in hand and its taken until March and we've lost 2 games at home

The other thing to learn which may help us, in teams of the owners of the club is that for this team needs strengthening if it is to cope in the Championship.

Right back, another decent goal scorer, left wing / midfield, and right midfield / wing at least.

It appears to me that investment has gone in at a level to get promotion from league one, and I am hopeful that the owners have a plan for a competitive team in the championships.

Some of the players have been brought in to be able to do a job in the Championships but if they lack the quality, they need to continue to work hard so they can get a spot in another decent league one team. They have chosen a difficult and competitive field and need to deal with it.

Defeats are never enjoyable but can be blessings in disguise if it highlights things that need to be improved and worked on. For both manager(s), owners and the players.

    Onwards and upwards.
  • I think that this coming week the way the players react will tell SCP all he needs as to whether we need a couple of loans to haul us over the line. I think the management at Charlton are very focused and won't allow sentiment or anything else get in the way of promotion. I think the players step up to the plate or find some padded shorts for the bench. Eyes on the prize chaps. Eyes on the prize.

Surely if you are right this raises even more fundamental questions about the management. We have brought in 20 plus players since May last year, if none of them are going to make an impact from the bench then what is the point of having them?

Anyway, in reality I think the team are pretty tired when you look at the number and intensity of the games that we have had, a weeks rest and a a bit of time taking stock by the management should help. there is no need to panic, just a clear view away from the maelstrom of Tuesday / Saturday football which we now have

  • What is the beef with hayes
  • Not sure there is any "beef" as such. I just don't think SCP fancies Hayes.
  • First off, lets get this straight, I do not think Chris Powell is shit! I think he has been quality and he is a Charlton legend...here comes the however....however I think sometimes he is tactically naive...I still dont think hes shit and he is still quality.....I would like to know his thinking in the last 20 mins yesterday when at 4-2 it slowed down, County were on the back foot, why not go 3-5-2, push them back and push Solly and Wigs forward, we had nothing to loose and all to gain, ImHO, Powell will need to address this part of his game if/when we get in The Championship....I still dont think hes shit and he is still quality.....!
  • He's a new manager ... still learning so no surprise he doesn't get it right all the time ... he'll get there and he'll take us up
  • My problem with this thread is the original poster. He doesn't post much on here anymore. But his choice tv video at dagenham last season was pretty grim. He threw loads of abuse at our manager on video and why he shouldn't be our manager. He ain't been on here all season... but just after our worst loss he pipes up.

Erm i think you were after the scratchcard thread Offie?

  • Maybe I should have made my comment clearer. I'm not saying I think Clarke is completely useless, nor do I think Powell does. It's just about the impact that can be made at that point. I don't see Clarke as an impact player, it seems to take him quite a while to get going and he's not a player with a lot of urgency in his game. That's why he wasn't brought on if you ask me. Yann can get you a last minute header or a free kick or win a pen. BWP is always sniffing around the box. Clarke is more about hold up play and build up. Contrast with Waggy who is all bustle and industry which was perfect for that scenario. I think him not coming on was more about the right player for the right situation rather than a lack of faith on Powell's part

Is there anyone else with a username that ends in "it" that wants to talk bo****** ?

Don't jump on the bandwagon of this thread and question my right to post on this forum ! Iv earnt my right over the last 32 years to pick and choose when I post, yes I havnt posted much this season but iv been reading the forum constantly. I also know a lot of people that do the same, are you saying that these people arnt welcome and their opinions don't count because they don't kiss the clique arse every day.

Also FYI I havnt made any personal criticism of CP, the video you refer to is a bad example....it was a time when virtually every Charlton fan was unhappy at the state of our club...there are cafc fans all over the world that wouldn't of been able to get to dagenham that would have valued that video because it gave them a very clear idea of the feeling amongst that fans. I'm sure at that time also there were threads on here about whether CP should be sacked, at that moment in time that was a fair question.

As far as the videos are concerned you have to play devils advocate to a certain degree, to provoke reaction, to ask questions and voice an overall opinion..

I hope iv earnt the right the post this response, just to add I havnt earnt any coaching badges since Saturday night also......I also hope that your comments havnt put off any other Charlton fans to contribute that maybe don't post on a regular basis but do read the forum every day.

If the CL management feel that my meagre contribution this season is worthy of a ban then please feel free to let me know when we next see each other at the valley or an away game.

(walks away shaking his head to check his cafc supporting career and his total amount of posts compared to days as a member of charlton life to get an average figure)

  • I thought the idea of a forum was to debate with people with people who have different opinions, the name calling is embarrassing.

    Idiot. ;-)
  • Indeed.

Im not sure what bandwagon ive jumped on. I didnt question your right to post and I've no interest in how long you have been supporting Charlton. Im sure i would never tell someone they could or cant post on here.

I just find it odd that you haven't been on jumping up and down with ecstasy like the rest of us, but have appeared when the chips are down so to speak and seem to have a personal issue with Powell. Maybe i imagine that.

As for if the CL management feel you should be banned for your meagure contributin, what a hissy fit.
  • Only question I'd ask is the lateness of his subs, maybe he doesn't feel like Clarke etc can make much of an impact hence why he only plays for 5 minutes, if that's the case then why have him and the others on the bench.
