Ultras

  • I went to Roma V Lazio a few years back, it was a fantastic experience, all be it very intimidating. I remember a group of Lazio ultras walking towards us with sticks and weapons, with scarves over their faces looking for a tear up. I got tear gassed and the shock of my life when bangers went off next to me. Our tickets didn't turn up from some online ticket office so we ended up buying tickets from a tout outside the ground. We asked for Roma end and when trying to get in was told they were Lazio tickets much to my frustration. However my mate who speaks a little Italian managed to talk to a steward who just seemed to let us in, slightly different to the security at the Valley lol.

The Athmosphere was unbelievable and really enjoyed the experience despite the earlier issues. However under no circumstances should we copy this scene. It is unbelievably corrupt in Italy and most clubs are pretty much run by the Ultras. There was talk of the Lazio ultras turning up at training and threatening the players after a poor performance & threatening the manager because he tried to sign Cafu and they didn't want a black player (let alone manager). Does anybody else remember when the Roma Lazio game was abandoned because their was a rumour circiling the ground that a child had been run over by the police outside. The Roma Ultras decided to walk on the pitch and told Francesco Totti to tell the referee to abandon the game. Unbelievable scenes, ones that are better off in Italy and not over here.

On a lighter note Roma won 2-0 on my visit and now have a real soft spot for Roma.

    Forza Roma

How about when the ultra's caused £100k of damage when they sold Nesta to Milan, cheeky.

I have been to Parma a few times to watch them and the Curva Nord there is fantastic. The banners and artwork is amazing, how that works for Palace is anyones guess though.

possibly the same game we went to. there were fans setting fire to opposition teams flags. empty plastic coffee shot cups all over the floor, mopeds everywhere, dust, police, batons, masks, flags, this was all 3 hours before k/o.

We wanted to sit in lazio end, but got tickets from a tout in the Roma end. managed to perch on a step for the duration of the game - had some 80 yr old woman with an orange baton and a whistle behind me. there were fans climbing over the plastic fences at either end of the curva getting into the 'best bit' we had the megaphone in front of us and helped unravel the banners on the instructions of the leader who barely watched the game - what a silly job he's given himself!

an amazing experience, would never happen in England.

to see if it was the same game - was totti paraded on the pitch in a golf buggy as he came back from injury? the game we missed was CAFC v Aston Villa so this was probably more years ago than I originally though although it was definately 2-0 to Roma.

Exactly, all the scene here will ever be is a cheap imitation.

I'm not sure whether the fans running the club to that extent is a good (right-wing politics aside) or bad thing!

I don't mean to drag up on old thread, but I thought this was worth sharing. Basle did it this weekend and it's close to being the coolest tifo I've ever seen.

    Now THEY are Ultras.
  • At one point on Saturday I stood up and gesticulated angrily towards the ref, so I guess I am an ultra now.
Ah, but did you Swear at the same time ?
I think I might have used the word 'twat'. Pwoper nawty!
He stood up, which is not the act of your average Charlton fan

Not too sure Mancini and Emerson scored Mancini with a flick through his legs from a corner.
  • I don't remember anything about the game or the players! too taken with the spectacle of it all! :-)

  • their flag is pathetic
  • Thats the lamest thing I've seen in quite some time.
They went to an under 18's match, they didn't fight in a war.

That video is laughable. It has however reminded me of another Ultra video involving Tottenham...
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26Ju8-AzH6I
It gets especially OTT at 6 minutes.

I'm a bit jealous of the Rome derby stories, it was pretty non-eventful when I went and the game was 0-0.

I also spent 11 games in South America trying to get tear gassed but to no avail, though I was witness to a near riot and stadium fire at Peru's Clasico, Universitario-Alianza Lima. Was kinda my fault for going in the away end (albeit by accident), we had to run out the stadium covering our heads as home fans were above and pelted us as soon as the final whistle went. Ahead of us, others were legging it out to collect the leather belts which had been confiscated on entrance, then went round the stadium trying to get the Universitario supporters.

Alianza fans also have a habit of bringing a huge banner down from the back of the stand, covering a couple of thousand people for a minute or two during the match. And everyone under that is doing a quick line of coke.
  • Anyone covers me with a huge flag during a match is soon going to have a flag with a hole in it.

    That's just plain funny.

    "The passion carried us through".

    Oh god.
  • I wonder what would have happened if they'd bumped into Palace Ultras at London Bridge. Would they,
    1. Embrace in a group hug?
    2.Sing at each other?
3.Stand around nervously playing with thier bollocks?
  • That's hilarious. Red army 1 fighting cock 0.
  • Well made and edited, good video in that concept, but in reality.. embarassing lol
  • The most pathetic thing is these self styled 'Ultras' seriously think that scouring Youtube for the latest European chants, copying them (badly) and parading some shit home made banners is somehow saving the soul of English Football.

The reason Ultra culture works in places like Italy is that it's their thing, it's part of their culture, comes naturally to them and like it or not has an edge to it. I find a load of English nerdy teenagers trying to replicate that from their bedroom in their Mums house deeply embarassing.

If anyone is guilty of selling the soul of English football it's these muppets, no suprise to see Croyden's finest are at the forefront of this.
