Palace and Europe ?

Losing out on a place in Europe to the team who got everyone banned must've stung a bit.Chizz said:MrOneLung said:I know it is Palace, but really snidey by Forest
Nonsense. Remember what happened in 1991?
Palace's best-ever top-flight season came in 1990–91, when they 'challenged' for the title, but fell short, finishing in third place behind champions Arsenal and runners-up Liverpool to achieve the club's highest league finish to date. Palace were denied a place in Europe because although the ban on English clubs following the Heysel Stadium disaster had now been lifted, it resulted in England being unranked in European competitions which meant there was only one place available in the UEFA Cup, and this went to Liverpool rather than Palace.
Palace screamed, threw their toys out of their pram and threatened court action against UEFA, Liverpool, the Football League... who knows?
If you think that Forest have done the wrong thing by writing to UEFA for clarification of their rules, then Palace's behaviour following the lifting of the Heysel ban was much worse, much more petulant and much more "snidey".1 -

It did for Everton!2

If it means palace don’t get into Europe, I’ll happily write a letter as well2

Oh do fuck off. It's Palace we're talking about. Quite apart from them being stripey Nigel mugs, they've already abused the bankruptcy process twice, knocking all their creditors in the process and using it to secure a steady Premier league presence for the past decade. Of anyone deserves to get made an example of, it's them.MrOneLung said:

And remember that those small creditors included charities like St Johns Ambulance who received 1p in the £ owed.Leroy Ambrose said:

Going off topic, but that Everton side would have been serious contenders for the European Cup.YTS1978 said:It did for Everton!0 -
Forgetting which club it is, if there are rules they have to be applied or why have them?7
-
Personally I hope they play.
not sure they have a squad that could cope with Europe and a premier league season 😉0 -

That's a shame0

Drogheda United who won the FAI Cup in November to qualify for the conference league Q2 are part of a multi club ownership group along with Walsall and Silkeborg in Denmark have just been informed they will not be able to take part in Europe as Silkeborg also qualified. I dont know if that is indicative of anything for Palace.
They are appealing to CAS but its not looking likely.

Would be incredibly difficult for them to then not kick Palace out on the same terms, without looking shady as fuckDyerConsequences said:

Drogheda one is interesting because they actually qualified first of the two clubs with the same owner so it’s slightly different from Palacesam3110 said:

Even more bang to rights then, Drogheda qualify of first but kicked out based on the co-efficient and where teams finish in the league, both of those things work against Palace and with 2 different teams and 2 different owners they have.fenaddick said:

UEFA would never make such an unpopular decision (unpopular outside of this forum), they don’t have the cajones.Palace will be in Europe next season, we’ve just gotta hope all this palaver ends up with them crashing out with a whimper.2
-
It’s a win-win in my opinion.
If they’re allowed to play, it’ll always be tarnished and there’s a reasonable chance that playing in Europe will negatively affect their league performances too.
If they’re kicked out, there’ll be a lot of angry virgins in Surrey vowing to do something about it, like make a flag, or sing a song.

Delighted with this sentiment, but aren’t you a Spurs fan? Has Charlton life managed to brainwash a dislike for Palace into you?JohnBoyUK said:I would piss my pants with glee if they get booted out lol1 -
It's not quite the same though. The same group (Trivela) own 100% of Drogheda and 80% of Silkeborg, so are the majority shareholder of both clubs and clearly there is a conflict.sam3110 said:

Textor isn't a majority shareholder at Palace and doesn't have the final say on any decisions.0 -
There's no win-win. Them being in Europe won't be tarnished at all, they'll still be there earning the £££ and enjoying the European away days. The Premier League is so fcked these days that there's no way they go down, even if they struggle, as the promoted sides will come straight back down again without a whimper.lordromford said:It’s a win-win in my opinion.

Yes, Spurs fan but Charlton have always been my second team, purely because @AFKABartram used to drag me to games over at Upton Park and the Valley when I wasn't going Spurs.paulsturgess said:

In my view, this whole drama they’re having around being allowed in or not is a silver lining to the ghastly cloud of the pyjama wearing gimps winning the FA Cup.
When they actually won it, I wouldn’t have dreamed they’d have to go through such hand-wringing, so I’m viewing it as a positive. If you want to be miserable about it, that’s your call.
Having said all that, them being chucked out is my preferred outcome! 😎0 -
The main thing that should be taken from this is that multi club ownership is awful and shouldn't be allowed9

I can't see the prem relegation being so simple next year.Croydon said:

Leeds and Burnley have a decent chance of survival while sunderland certainly won't roll over like the three that went down this season.0
