  • Green strikes a good dead ball too !
  • Yep, good call.
  • And Stephens!
  • Another professional job. Our defence is rock solid. Hamer needs to command the box a bit better i think and be more assertive in the air when collecting high balls but his distribution is first class. How Pritchard was playing non- league football so recently is a mystery. Absolute gem of a find.

Thought the atmosphere was immense at times and it certainly swayed the ref and seemed to boost the team in parts. Not seen MK Dons yet but still think we are the best footballing team Ive seen so far. We also seem to frustrate opponents leaving them to resorting to hoof ball and finding themselves even more frustrated when our defenders comfortably deal with it.

Great day and the spirit on and off the pitch amongst addicks at the moment is priceless.
  • Well done Charlton. I thought both sides played good passing football, and that a draw would have been a fair result, apart from the free-kick (wrong decision), I thought there was very little between the two teams. Also considering we were the away side we pushed forwards at very regular intervals.
20,992 with 3,000 away supporters, I thought this would have attracted more Charlton fans, bit surprised at the low home turn out and how subdued your support was, although at the end of the game there was some singing from the home sections with good volume.
All in all a good day out, hope we can get up with Charlton (cant see you blowing it now), still a 4 way battle for the second spot.
  • @Wiltsblade If you play your passing game for the rest of the season, there's no reason why you shouldn't go up automatically. You impressed up until the final third of the pitch but didn't really test our back four or keeper.
  • Mate you lacked penetration at the important interval, your work rate and organization was 2nd to none and you will beat most teams with the amount of possession you have. Would much rather you lot than the maaaassssive or the 1man terrier go up

Good luck for the remainder nick points off the other 3 and see you in the championship next season
  • I keep saying this about Dale, but we do miss him when we're under pressure, cause when the ball drops and he gets it, he's got the composer and quality to take a touch, and pick a pass. I like Bradley Pritchard, but Stephens has a load of quality on the ball
  • so we're not missing andy hughes now................
  • What a game, what a goal that settled it. I mean the power and accuracy JJ got on the ball was unreal.

Our defense is the best in the division and that showed yesterday as we where un-passable.

a tip- top performance from the whole team.

I also thought Russel good the ball in what was a great tackle.

Haynes also looked good in the one attack he had.

  • I think the point about dale stephens supplying bwp is relevant as Yann and bwp dont seem to connect that well even though both are playing well. There needs to be more understanding between the two where yann knows where bwp is going to make his run as he heads it forward; it just was not happening yesterday.
I thought ben is a good goalie and did play well against wednesday ; its up to him as to whether he'll be in the team next season but we should always get behind him as we all want a confident keeper.
I liked haynes a lot; thought hughes would have been a safer midfielder for last 20 mins.
We all underestimate the talismanic effect of Johnnie Jackson but he makes so much difference to the side by his mere presence and confidence.
BWP will probably start scoring again against the weaker defences and I would not want a replacement up front as he has definitely upped his work rate .
Charlton thrive on big challenges and we need to aim to break the points record to keep motivated.....just a few points to consider

A fair view on the match Wiltsblade, after the goal you had to come at us but our defence was equal I thought our support was alright mate have a think about it, look at gates at this level and I note that you also float between 16-20,000 this season.
  • A great performance by our back 4. Evans and Cresswell were no match for Morrison and Taylor and our full backs are consistently excellent. United didn't create very much and their one real chance came from Hamer's error in the second half, which Evans skied over the bar.

We did look a bit "leggy" in the second half and, as others have commented, I suspect that Stephens may get a run out in the near future ( maybe in the Bury game ? ).

On the basis that no one fails to go up with 90 points ( save for Sunderland, I think, in 1998, which was a freak year ), we need 30 from the last 20 games, 11 of which are at home. We also have a depth of squad which is as good, if not better, than any of the others in the top 5 - plus a tough and streetwise team that know how to grind out results.
  • A great defensive display from us with little pockets of good football. I really think its time for BWP to have a rest though. Give Haynes a start and let BWP come off the bench for the last half hour with fresh legs to get a goal. He's not a threat at the moment and i really think we needed to bring Haynes on for him earlier. The Russell change also should have been done earlier in my opinion but CP clearly knows what he's doing, so what do i know. He's very like Curbs in that he likes to see what the opposition are doing sub wise before he does his. Hamer did fumble one today but i think he's a good keeper. Hollands was back to his best and pritchard was good but need Stephens back to get the football flowing again. Whether we play well or not - the result is always the same. As they say, strikers win games, defences win titles. The ginger fella for them was good and i can see why they've been rolling teams over but we needed to 'break' them and we did. In fact, that's huddersfield, sheff wed and utd all beaten recently without a goal conceded. Champions, champions, champions.....
  • Agree 100% about BWP coming off the bench, Dan.
  • I often wonder with regards to substitutes if managers wait to see what each are thinking or is it just demonstrating faith and trust in his men , to deliver and achieve what is set out to them all week

, I think powelly falls in that category, I think he looks at the players, trusts them implicitly as they do him and together they achieve,

fergie is the master of this, sometimes watching man yoo on the box I find myself thinking why is he on why has he not made that change, and then bingo the player I have been thinking was having a poor game he either scores or sets up a goal

Powell does this especially with his strikers
  • you must have thought that about welbeck today !!
  • I agree that he has done this with BWP for the last few games but i think it's reached a point where a change of tactic may be required. We had the rub of the green yesterday but wouldn't have needed it if our frontline was working more effectively.
  • Wiltsblade, you have to bear in mind that the South Stand amplifies the sound significantly and if you are in there, its hard to hear anything from elsewhere. Many of us have been asking the club to put away supporters somewhere else because of that. The club say that it can't be done due to a number of factors.

Thank you for coming on here and giving your honest view. The general consensus is that Blades were the best opposition we have faced. Best of luck for the rest of the season.
  • i just ignore any away fans views regarding crowd noise - it's very rare i ever go to an away game and think the home fans are loud for exactly the reason you state bing. Sheff wed are quite renowned for being loud but i could hardly hear them last week.

  • Blades disallowed goal - I sit North Upper in the middle. I had a 100% clear view.
The ball was hitting Hamer's 2 hands as the Blades player pulled the back of Hamer's shirt. He consequently pulled Hamer backwards, just as he was about to catch the ball. Definite 100% foul, even if it couldn't be seen on TV, which it couldn't.
  • BD, I remember at Wembley, I could hardly detect the Mackems singing. When I got back and watched the highlights I could hear they were pretty noisy. I acknowledge that could have something to do with where they stick the effects microphone.

  • Further to what Covered End said and I think someone else previously, there was not one serious protest from the Sheff players re the Hamer decision.
To me, that is extremely telling.
  • agree CE - I had a good view of it and was surprised their player wasn't booked - it was a blatant foul and if it hadn't been spotted, they would have prospered greatly. He should have been carded.

I saw the pull back too, as did the ref - just shows you that a poor Tv angle sometimes lies- reminds me of the Exeter home game when I saw the ball didn't cross the line but on tv it looked like it could have. Now people can say it didn't happen but I saw it! Everybody who seemed to sit around where I was sitting called it the same as wit the hand ball.

We had 2 tough games and have come through them with 6 points. Yes the p[alyers had to dig in but they did that and some. The best teams can be a little off and still win which is what we have done.
  • Not been able to get on here before tonight and too many comments to read through so apologise if I'm just repeating what anyone else has said..............

Thought luck was on our side a bit during the match. Didn't really see much contact with Hamer when he fumbled the ball into the net but glad the ref did. I personally like Hamer and think he's a decent keeper but thought he had his worst game in a charlton shirt this weekend.
My take on Russells sending off was it was a tad harsh. What didn't help him was that he momentarily slipped when approaching the ball, thus delaying his contact. Clearly saw Beattie throttling Kermogant and noticed straight away that the ref hadn't seen it. Thankfully, his assistant did and duly "grassed" up JB.

JJ's free-kick was nothing short of sublime and was even better than the one at wendys house.

Another great solid performance from the back four. Taylor made a great interception, sticking his head on the end of a blades boot to clear the danger and despite everything they threw at us, simply couldn't find a way through our rear-guard.

Note to any wendys who might be reading this. You keep banging on about us having a blip and how we'll react to it? Well, this is our blip and we react to not playing great by grinding out the results. UTA

  • I had a grandstand view and Hamer was fouled without question.

That said many refs would have put it down to "normal" jostling and allowed the "goal" so we did get lucky.
  • A Fantaaastic result, ugly but gutsie. But that's the Addicks of old ...beat any of
the great opposition and find it difficult against the lowly teams...on paper we should beat. Been the same with The Addicks since my 1st game I watched back in 1947. More unpredictable than most footie teams and that's why we love them so much.
  • watching Chris Powell and his interview .. he is just spot on... His comments over Danny Wilson of "move on, no problem" just calmness personified ... and his own ethos as a defender is accross in the team... Very very impressed... and what a goal from Jacko... In about 8 weeks if we are still doing it I will put a couple of bottle of champers in the Fridge ....
