Slater was asked about the auction, and whether the club would bid for items, by the Charlton Live radio show on Saturday, and responded: "We are aware of it, and it's something we need to look into because he was a bit of a legend.
"I remember his goals and his performances, and if someone from a distance, as I was at the time, knows the importance of Clive to this club, I can appreciate how important he must have been to supporters and the club itself. It's certainly something we will look into."
A 'bit of a legend' ...... what qualifies as a legend Mr Chairman, at least post war?.......
I wrote to the club in response to this, and received a reply from Charlton that they would pass on my email. I suggested that perhaps some of the fan's might like to contribute towards such a fund, for Charlton to have custody/stewardship of some of the articles. As yet the chairman has not replied directly, I hope he does to let some of the fan's to contribute towards these important items. As they will probably be beyond most of our pockets ( certainly mine). Regardlesss of why Clive is selling these item's, the part he played that day is 'pivotal' , at least to myself, in the history of the club. I am a little dissapointed that one of the directors has not stepped up to the 'plate' to try and organise something, I for one hope they do?
I don't think they are being blackmailed- nobody is forcing the club to buy them - merely suggesting that the items are a piece of Charlton history that they might want to own for what will be a relatively modest outlay. If the club decides otherwise that is the club's decision - we are on a forum giving our opinions.
Of course it is the club's decision. Of course this is a forum giving opinons. All I was doing was giving my opinion and the reasons behind my opinion. I fully accept some people completely disagree, that makes my opnion neither right not wrong, simply my opinion. I'm not going to tell the club, or Mendonca for that matter, what they should or shouldn't do.
And for Henry, in case the answer wasn't clear I don't think CL should use money rasied for it either. However, I would be happy to pay to watch him ina testomnial or a dinner. I am not objecting him raising money, just the selling of medals / shirts etc given to him.
This is so sad. Even at my age when I should know better, Clive Mendonca is a hero of mine, without him, CAFC would never have made it to thePremier League, he is one of the very all time Charlton greats, a very gifted, clean player .. well we all know how good he was. Curbishley writes in 'Valley of Dreams' that Mendonca was a man of very few words who let his football do the talking, an asset as a player and probably a hinderance outside of the football world. I will post this info on the Grimsby site to let the locals know of his apparant financial plight. Clive Mendonca is still very much a hero up here as well.
I remember that cold foggy night game up at the codmen, when super clive knocked in a hatrick, was it 2-5? even the locals clapped him. a great player for us and one that holds Powell'esque esteem for me.
What I don't get is why someone would bid on the boots. How on earth can you guarantee their authenticity? On the sellers say so? Not that I am trying to dig anyone out, but it wouldn't be difficult to sling in a set of boots and say they were the ones that secured premiership football. Lets be fair, I would want to keep some form of memento of the game if I was him.
Hi Robbo, I totally understand your point but the seller is Clive. Clive is also coming down to London to present the items in person to the winners. I am not sure if you get more authentic than that.

I think he's trying to suggest that the seller could keep the actual boots and sell another pair that look just like them. I guess footballers have several pairs of boots. There would be no way that anyone could confirm that they were the actual boots worm. The only one who would know is the player, and if he lied one could end up with nothing more than a second hand pair of boots.
Just so sad that he feels he has to do this. Quite possibly a heart breaking decision for him.
There may be rational arguments for a group of fans or the club not buying them. But, for me, there was nothing rational about the playoff final and how much it means to each of us.
Re the boots, Steve Jones has confirmed that Clive kept all the play-off bits together and they remained sealed in his house until now. That is why all the items are in such good condition. The boots are the pair he played in during the Wembley Play Off. Hope that helps.
Hi all, Steve Jones here, if anyone has any questions regarding the Clive auctions i will be happy to help. Regarding the boots i can 100% confirm that they were the boots worn by Super Clive. Jonah

Any hint at what the "reserve" price is likely to be on some of these lots?
