I might agree if the stuff didn't belong to SuperClive. I think he is a special case. Would be a good way to honour him - using the items in some sort of display that will become all the more special to the club as the years go by. And certainly will be a sound investments financially I suspect.
I am against the club buying these items. The club is full of shirts and memorabilia that players have donated to the club. Powell donated his England shirt to the club knowing that he wasn't going to ever receive many. Why should the club then be blackmailed into buying items from someone simply because they see them as nothing more than material goods.
I don't think they are being blackmailed- nobody is forcing the club to buy them - merely suggesting that the items are a piece of Charlton history that they might want to own for what will be a relatively modest outlay. If the club decides otherwise that is the club's decision - we are on a forum giving our opinions.
Mendonka is a legend to us all. One of the greatest days off my life seeing that hat trick etc. Sad that he left the game so early as i would have loved to see him fully fit in the Prem-------BUT im not easy the way this is going----these medals etc mean more to us than Clive---to start his wifes business ?
I don't see what is 'wrong' in this thread. People are debating the rights and wrongs of whether the club should be looking to buy these items, and its raised a greater awareness of the auction.
I started a separate thread to discuss the rights and wrongs of.players selling medals, so would be grateful if people used that one on a broader issue.
If you would like another answer to the question then I would say no. I think that showing our financial support to the club by sponsoring the current payers' shirts is a better use of the money.
As nice as it might be for the club to own these items, I don't, personally, think that it is a problem for them to be bought by a private owner either as a keepsake or an investment. They would be no more available to the fans in a private owner's possession than they have been for the last thirteen years.
I think the debate is very healthy. The reality is that Clive has decided to sell these items. I am waiting for Steve Jones to join CL as he can provide more info on Clive and opinion on ex-players selling medals....having done the same himself.
He earnt those medals and it is upto him to do whatever he wants with them.
He keeps them and we still know him as Super Clive or he sells them and we still know him as Super Clive, what does it matter? I'd be surprised if he needed to look at the medal, ball, boots etc to remember that day. I remember is clear as day now and i don't own any of it........although i'd love the shirt.
Also Steve Jones goal, away at Anfield, 3-3......his goal, priceless moment.
The club should arrange a testimonial game for Clive at the season's end. After we are proclaimed champions, the mood will be so high that a Mendonca Testimonial would sell out .. put the money in trust though as rumour has it that CM LOVES a punt on the ponies.
Couple of points...... I do not think Clive is blackmailing anyone, or the club , in anyway that any 'artefact', or 'memorabilia' as long as it can be correctly attributed as genuine. Ebay is stuff full of this kind of material. Is it not up to the player to keep the match ball if he scores a hat trick, keep his medal's.? When the England world cup stuff went up for sale a few years ago, I do not remember the general public demanding that the shirt be restored to the nation?., Even though they played for the national team.
Fan's should not be forced, or co-erced to participate. I would like to think that some fans , including myself would like club to obtain some of the articles because it was in my opinion a very significant day in Charlton's history, and he did score a hat trick at Wembley?. Aside from the FA cup medal, what could be more significant?, especially in recent times. The fact that Clive has decided to sell these item's I am sure is not been taken lightly, or direspectfully, or to the club or fans.
As the item's are up for sale I suggested that if a group wanted to get together and buy this for the fan's it would not burden the club, or make them open to charges of 'compromise'.
I have bid and been outbid, if I had won i would have offered the shirt to the club, my choice, my money. If i was rich, I would do this because I believe these are important item's for the heritage of the club, and future fan's.
Quite frankly this is just the type of question that should be asked on here, a fan's website?.
If you are not interested or do not want to support this, fine no one is going to think any more of you, or any less than if you offer £10,000. Well I will not, I will just think you are a rich fan? Glad we have some......
Some of the ungrateful comments leave a sour taste in my mouth - Superclive is a legend and thankfully 99% of fans will understand that and not make snide remarks about him.
If fans did a collection at a match to raise funds to buy the items for the club, I'd give £20 and feel bad I hadn't given more.
I think it is important to get all the issues out there........ Clive really loves and respects the fans and I have passed comments from here onto him and Steve Jones. The spirit of the club comes out when anyone talks about that game. I lean towards Ken's view and just hope it all works out for Super Clive, the fans and the club.
I think it is a question you can ask him yourself on the 25th Feb. Steve & Clive are looking into holding An Evening with Super Clive & Steve. Just trying to sort out the venue. More details to come....
I registered with this site and put in a cheeky £100 bid on the play-off shirt when this thread first appeared. At the time it was the highest bid. Didn't take too long before a message popped up in my inbox telling me I'd been outbid.
Oh well, it was worth a try.......................................

You must have known that the thread would turn out like this - they all do in the end.

A question which only one person answered

I doubt they'd come back to play!

Football match a great idea as well by the way?

There was one against NEC Nijmegen if memory serves me right and not that many people went (as tends to be the case with these things)
Testimonials, like just about anything that isn't a league match, struggle to get bums on seats.
Oh well, it was worth a try.......................................
No chance of that then.
Depressing.
