Only decided to go today after my sons match was called off and boy am i glad i decided to go.
    We were immense.
After a nervy first 20 minutes we eased into the game and continued to frustrate Wednesday.
The second half was amazing. We hardly gave them a sniff and battled like i lives depended on it.

Semedo ( who should have been sent off) was out muscled by Hollands and Pritchard was outstanding.

To be fair we should have wrapped the game up many times but we just couldn't put the ball away.

Very proud of the lads today - That is definitely a team that will win the league and thankfully shut the doom mongers up once and for all.

Below are the scenes at the final whistle.
  • great video
  • Hardly a sniff in the second half, apart from the two goal line clearances and the penalty?

Two chances you couldn't put away and a non penalty. As i said - Hardly a sniff.

    wheeeeey!
  • Just got home

Another great TEAM effort. Great defensive 5 with Hamer playing better even if his kicking was a bit wayward. The midfield was effective with Pritchard everywhere, Green was ineffective and Holland didn't have his best game, Kermorgant was strong and put himself about, WP tried but it just isn't going for him but he did try hard. JJ's free kick was pure class.

OK I don't think a couple of them had their best games but as a team they were enormous, the Wendies just didn't get a sniff and with a bit more composure it could have been 0-3.

Our supporters were wonderful singing and chanting through most of the game, after the final whistle the players came over, then as they were walking back CP made them all return and line up and applaud us, then as they finally went CP stayed and waved, I felt very proud to be a Charlton supporter.
  • Netherton- the delusional being the following

    a) on Morrison (an everpresent in one of the best defences in the league). I agree that he took 20 to get going today but after that he was solid. I saw no evidence of your defence being better than ours because you were without him.

B)you saying bwp was 'off the boil' - for your sake you're lucky he wasn't 'on the boil'. He created far more than your two lumps up front.

    C) our 'shocking' timewasting and getting up in the refs face. Firstly, You lads most certainly employ the same tactics when its in your favour, so get off your high horse. And secondly, look at the booking count and tell me that we were dirty. Some of your tackles were indeed 'shocking' (although I think jose getting a yellow was the correct decision)

Good teams win big games. If I were you mate I'd spit your sour grapes out, ferment them into some lambrini and drown your sorrows. With megson at the helm of my club, that's what I'd be doing.
  • First up, congratulations on the win, and I would say you are the best team at Hillsborough this year by some distance.

Quality free kick, though I was screeming at Weaver to get a step to his left before it was struck, knew exactly what was going to happen, seem to remember Jackson scoring an identical one on Tv Halifax in cup or may be Yeovil away?

Not sour grapes but thought the ref was poor, would like to see the second half handball penalty appeal again. If that had been given the pressure would have gone up several notches.

    Number of overall observations.

Solly is quality defender, thought Marshall was off the pace today, far too much going on in his head with the contract to be on top form.

Your points on this board all season re semedo were highlighted for all to see today. Most owls wont agree I know but because he is head anfd shoulders above anything else we have had as a defensive midfielder for a long time. However he is not fluid enough and isnt able to create enough to be top class.

Morrison , sorry I still can have, two airshots today , luck to get away with both, and a different ref would have slaugther his constant barging into the back of strikers.

Liked the little black lad in centre midfield, (sorry dont know his name and not racist).BWP looked well out of sorts, can see why CP is adding two strikers)

A great result for you yes, but please dont start given large about morals of quality football , your time wasting from 1 st minute was shocking.Add to that the constant ear bashing at the ref, left me thinking, thats not what a top class side would do.

Would hope that most Addicks who went to the game would agree that we have improved a huge amount since our visit to the Valley.

I would also welcome constructive comments on us.

Good luck for the rest of the season, and please beat those Chavs from across the City next week , Otherwise today aint achieved all that.

    UTO

Couldnt quite bring yourself to be gracious in defeat without a few snipes. Time wasting and bitter pop at Morrison. Well no matter. We are top and have a better team and manager than Wednesday. If you can't see we are altogether better just remind yourself by looking at the league table. As for Megson. What a nasty shit of a man. Seems its a match made in heaven.

  • Some massive performances today from all of them. Hamer was particalurly solid from the aerial bombardment. Morrison and Taylor battled away against bigger men than themselves all afternoon. Solly, as usual, was superb. Hollands was immense and probably my Man of the Match. Pritchard put a great shift as did Russell when he came on. Kermorgant still won everything in the air and won a fair few tackles in the midfield while I thought BWP worked hard today and was unluckly not to score. JJ started off sloppy but I can forgive him after that free-kick. After that he was back to his usual best.

I didn't realise what a big physical team Wednesday were. Their entire team is 6ft plus. The left back they pushed up on Solly in the second half was twice his size but the lads battled away all game long. Their entire game revolved around hoofing it up onto the chests of the strikers. When the ball was on the ground we were by far the better team.

    Great performance, great result. COYR!

  • Not trying to be gracious in defeat, just giving an honest opinion, as an Owl of 41 years.Sorry If you were looking to find someone to bow sunshine up your arse.
  • I LOVE CHARLTON ATHLETIC FC! Just got in now from the game and have to say am buzzing. On the way today I had a funny feeling I wouldn't be heading home to York smiling but lo and behold I'm beaming. We more than showed we've got it in us to go up as Champions.
Not going to heap praise on anyone as I thought they all played their part in winning us 3 massive points though I hope there were no scouts watching Solly! BWP put in a good shift, gutted he didn't make it 2-0 after the restart with his 1 on 1.
Didn't think much of Wednesday, pretty uninspiring and ordinary tbh cynical from Semedo when he hacked down young Bradley.
As for there MASSIVE fans, I thought it would be a cauldron but there was hardly a peep from them.
Thanks to our fans who made the trip, you did us proud! I'll try and work out how to put up vids cos I got some good footage.
Will be going to bed VERY happy!

    COME ON YOU ADDICKS!
  • Fair play nethertonowl, appreciate your thoughts
  • Not sure who the name of the guy they had a left beck was but one thing is for sure

I actually think you were quite gracious in defeat and your views are pretty spot on. As for the ref , he did you a favour by not sending Semedo off .

As for your team , you really aren't going to go up automatically with that back four. You look like you are playing with four centre half's none of which have any mobility.

I love Hillsborough and the atmosphere is produces . It's definitely one of my favourite grounds.
Just a shame some moron had to through a punch at one of our fans after the game for no reason whatsoever. My 8 year old son was only a couple of yards away.
  • Evening boys and girls- just back from Yorkieland. Awesome today- we dealt with everything they threw at us and when Megson's long ball tactics failed, they had no Plan B- really should have been more convincing. Be very proud of these boys- this is a really special team SCP has assembled.

  • I'm not trying to be a dick netherton, just not really seeing where you're coming from on a few points. your fans have got a pretty bad rep for some of the awful chat on owlstalk and it does mean I have preconceptions of what you're all like...

Anyway agree with bedsaddick about hillsborough. For me it always seems a bit meh outside, but once in, its proper nice and very impressive. An old school home of football for sure.

Fair play. You're more than half gracious in defeat (although disagree with Morrison quotes) which is better than most! But thanks for the comments. Wednesday seem to win by 'bullying' their opposition. You cannot bully a good side. You can bully the Wycombe's and the Yeovil's (no disrespect) but you won't get anywhere by bullying Charlton.

I am not saying they don't play effective football because they do but it's very negative. You got your tactics wrongs today, you got them right against us earlier on in the season. But 3 points is 3 points and I do not care how they come.

I knew something like that would happen after the game.

As for the football, our keeper needs to be reigned in when it comes to taking free kicks outside his area. One of these days he will get caught out.

Wednesday were shit. There was no class within their team, just a bunch of yobs playing Sunday morning football.
How they ended that game with 11 men is beyond me.

BWP desperately needs a goal, although his work ethic was spot on.

  • I've no idea where this time wasting rubbish comes from. If anything we were pushing for a 2nd and Hamer was getting the ball down the other end as soon as possible.

From my point of view the red didn't give us a thing. Twice our players were hit in the face with elbows, Semedo should have gone as he was by far and away the last man and the ref was reacting to the crowd by giving everything the owls way.

Thought Wednesday made a great noise today so far play for that.
  • Just got back from the game and before the game in the pub the wednesday fans or at least some of them were a touch too arrogant for my liking which made this win all the more sweeter. Firstly though for all the talk of how few fans we were taking up we absolutely rocked today and it was like we have built on the Fulham experience. I dont know how many addicks were there but it felt more than 1500. What a rapport we have with powell and the team win or lose. Secondly what a delight to see us nullify their attack by winning the ball off of them; I thought our back 4 were all superb. Jacksons goal was up the other end but looked sublime. Great day out worth the trek and great to say 'I was there'

  • Bedsaddick, would agree with the semedo comment.

Surprised by Megsons tactics today, didnt think he should have thrown Jones in only two days after signing.Added to the fact Madine was making his comeback after a nine game gap, would have included JJ for extra pace.

Re the dick head throwing punches, sadly most clubs have some, not the actions of most thank god.

Think you are year ahead of us, but happy with the progress we have made, this time last year we could have gone to the wall.

As in first post , dont screw up against those grunters next week, we are moving in the right direction, but itis total S**T or bust this year for them.T
  • Just got in and I'm still absolutely buzzing. Had one of the best away days for a while with some top lads.

thanks for the feedback from a opposing fan, sounds like the team has one hell of a heart running through it.

  • Sorry I edited my comment and everything went a bit tits up.
  • To call for a penalty is typical clutching at straws - predicted the way the game would go and the Wednesday sour grapes comments yesterday! - you could call me nostradamus if it wasn't for the fact I called if 2-0!. Anybody who understands football will know we deserved to win that game- Wednesday lacked any real finesse or style and had no real ideas. The just tried to use their physical attributes which we handled well. Yes they had chances- course they would have chances but our chances were better. The tactic change was to put more big lumps on which isn't really what the beautiful game is about.

We did waste time a little -nothing too overt- but we had a game plan to deal with the way they play and we could play that game 5 times and we would win 4 of them. If Wednesday fans don't understand that they don't understand football. We didn't play as much football as we can but the football that was played during the game was played by us and we were right to be a bit more cautious as Wednesday didn't have the ability/nous to break us down.

Thought the whole team was excellent - Special mention must go to Solly who matched up against what looked like their best player who I thought fancied it and you wondered who is going to win that battle- well that Solly bloke has reserves of determination and won that battle- but why should I be surprised. Pritchard got more into the game as it went on and was so busy but also a great little player -btw, it doesn't matter where the block was - he would have had a one on one with Weaver so it was a red. Kermogant was brilliant and BWP showed class and work rate and the goal that sets him off again is mighty close- was unlucky Weaver pulled off a great save from him but that's the way it is going at the moment.

Morrison got stick and initially looked like he might be uncharacteristically wobbly but again stupid to think he wouldn't be his commanding self. Really I'm trying to pick players out but will end up naming them all - I mean Hamer was excellent, Wiggins put in a Wiggins performance and we all know what that means (top drawer), Holland worked his socks off, Kermogant was a constant nuisance to them (How did we get this bloke for free? -what a find Sir Chris), and as for JJ -class finish - Premiership class. I have mentioned everybody bar Green who was pretty decent oh and Taylor- the sort of player you don't mention as much as you should but who always does what needs to be done. WIll give player marks tomorrow as my MOTM keeps changing.

  • Plaaayer- I didn't think the ref had a particularly good game, but I think he was right about the semedo yellow. Very similar to the cahill red against spurs a few weeks ago...and that got rescinded.
