  • Why did Powell have a go at Megson? Because he was giving it the biggun to Morro, so you expect him to stand there and watch it? Megson is a horrible little weasel.
  • Plaaayer, jog on, both managers have admitted swearing, both clubs felt agreived about challenges in the game .

As for not putting the ball out of play, you had the ball and continued to attack!

Any body who wants to start on people out side the ground is scum, we all have em including your club.

There are some balanced , sensible comments on her and then , we have Glasshalf full, In your dreams! ASk CP if he thinks that team will rip up the championship and he leave you wishing you hadnt been so stupid to open your mouth.
Mate, get lost, you're becoming boring now.

There are some balanced , sensible comments on here and then, we have my contributions....
    Spot on
  • The real Netherton appears

  • Netherton - gotcha !!
Of course SCP would never say that - in any case we have the small matter of 21 games to get through first, to get us out of L1. But ask anyone on here and you'll be told that something special is afoot. The way we are playing not booting our way up - incidentally, do you how few cards we've had this season ? - from a group of players who 25 games ago were complete strangers, means that there is already a momentum which will not end come May. Dreams, maybe, but some dreams come true ....
  • Don't forget that we will then add to that team it may only be 2 or 3 next season , when we go up which we will

I love the fact people think we have spent loads doing it, when the reality is that we have only spent the jenkinson money

Still we have 2 weeks or so for Wednesday to spend the reported 6mil on players including wages that one of their numpties stated on here the day before the signed llera

Netherton I am dispointed that your true colours outed so soon
  • It was a great result for us and fully deserved IMHO.
Some of the Wednesday fans, but not all, accused us of dirty tactics blah blah.
    Utter nonsense.
We won because we took one of our chances brilliantly, and over the 90 minutes we were the better team.
Wednesday are not a bad side by any means and they did create some chances. But they never took them, and in the end we out fought them and looked a class above them to be honest.
    Great performances throughout the team.
Great interaction before and after the game between Powelly and players and Powelly and fans, and players and fans.
He has built a team full of the attributes that he had himself as a player and yesterday it felt very special to be witnessing that process.
    Long may it continue.
The team and support did themselves proud yesterday.
  • A great day out. We got the 9.25 and were in the pub at just after 12. I heard about the train trouble on the way back and am very pleased that at least some of our lot got there for the second half.

I thought we turned in a thoroughly resolute, disciplined and professional performance. Wednesday did, as was to be expected, come at as aggressively in the first 20 or 25 minutes but never really opened us up and only really got behind us once in the whole game, when O'Grady turned Taylor and pulled the ball back from the byeline.

I watched the game from the South Stand ( the one to the right, when looking out from the Leppings Lane end ) and was level with the penalty spot, near the Kop ( a great view, therefore, of Jackson's free kick ). There was a lot of bellyaching from Wednesday fans around us about time wasting and negativity but, for the most part, they seemed a nice enough bunch, as I've always found them to be in the past ( the odd bell end/ windup merchant on the forums is hardly representative ). In truth, Hamer can be a bit of a rascal on the timewasting front. Defending the bellowing Kop in the second half, I was a bit worried that he'd find himself in trouble with the ref but the issue never arose.

The key to containing Wednesday was preventing them from making any progress down the wings. Particular respect to Chris Solly, who restricted their main creative player, Ben Marshall, to a couple of crosses - so much so, that Megson eventually took him off. Wiggins also did a job on their new right winger, Mike Jones, who was also substituted for the creative force that is Miguel Llera. The net result of all this was that most of the high balls coming into our box were from from unthreatening angles and were meat and drink for our very fine central defenders.

After a fairly scrappy first half, the second was better and we started to get on the ball more. BWP's pace was a constant threat on the shoulder on the last man and, with a bit more composure, we'd have had a second ( Weaver was also their m.o.m. ). As the "Green 'Un" acknowledged, " Charlton had been more of a threat going forward in this half and doing well through midfield....They [ Wednesday ] needed a goaline block by Lines after more pressure from Charlton, who had been formidable opposition in this half."

Although it was a very tense affair, we were never seriously threatened and the only effort of note that I can remember in the second half was Morrison's header in injury time, which Wiggins ( I think ) cleared about a yard or two from the goaline. Nor did I see anything resembling a penalty.

As for Wednesday, they lacked guile. Megson probably got his team selection wrong by bringing back Madine too soon and throwing Jones in 24 hours after signing him. He certainly got his tactics wrong, in "going long" far too early. It was very industrial and throwing so many men forward left them very vulnerable defensively. I think he got two other things wrong: first, in devoting nearly half his programme notes to his desperation to extend Marshall's loan ( what message does he think that sends to his other players, including the guy he's just signed ? ); and, secondly, making a tit of himself trying to have a go at Chris Powell on the touchline. Someone should tell Mego that leaving his jacket off on a very chilly does not automatically make him hard; nor can it help players, seeing their manager behave like a petulant teenager.

Overall, we edged it and, for all Wednesday's huff and puff, no one could credibly say that we didn't earn the three points.

Looking forward now to the Blades next Saturday. They took over 3,700 to Bury and had supporters on three sides of the ground. With 11 wins in the last 12, I'd expect them to fill the South Stand for the first and ( probably ) only time this season. They are expected to lose at least one player in the window ( probably Montgomery, who's a high earner ), although there may also be bids for Maguire and Quinn. Ched Evans' trial in April will probably means that he'll stay until the Summer. Whatever team they put out, we'll be more than a match for them and I hope we have a big turnout - the team, management and Board certainly deserve it.

Sussed you out yesterday mate. Hope you stay down in league one for years.

  • a few thoughts on a few players on the day after:
Hamer - seems to have learnt to punch the ball away, not my favorite way of clearing, but it worked for him and seems to give him more confidence. His kicking is inconsistent, some of his high kicks are poor but when he side kicks it he often starts some promising attacks.
Surprised you think his kicking is inconsistent, i honestly think he's the best distributor we've had for years.

Oh dear, why not go back and check out some of your December posts on here, what a difference a well earned win makes................Have you spent Milan's millions yet ?
"balanced" not a word associated with Sheffield Wednesday at present as you are the most one dimentional team EVER (it must have taken Chris Powell all of thirty seconds working out how to win the tactical battle) and "sensible" not a word associated with anything that comes out of your managers ample sized mouth.

What a birthday present for me!! GREAT performance - was exhausted just listening to the commentary!
Was this the best result you have seen since the club was formed Solar? Happy Birthday

It's up there with Sunderland/Wembley, Cliff Durandt's late winner in the snow c. 1964 to avoid relegation, 4-3 away at Newcastle when we flew up for a Tuesday night game and fought back from 1-3 down, etc, and 'Morts in the snow' at the spanners' new place, Kap :-)

Was Cliff Durandt's banana shot winner in the last minute against Southampton really in the snow ..............end of April

Just back from Sheffield and enjoyed every moment after spending a night in the Holiday Inn which, by chance, gave me the chance to wish Paolo well as Swindon were staying there on Friday night prior to their visit to Rotherham. I didn't ask how Macca was doing.

Everything was good - a first class team performance, good support, enough beer (to say the least) and a damn good curry in a trendy part of Sheffield later. Everyone played well, but 4 or 5 of the team were outstanding. I've got a lot of time for Taylor - he's a no fuss centre half who has hardly put a foot wrong in the 7 games I have seen this season - his partnership with Morrison seems to have worked since day one. The whole defence played well, but the front two had exceptional games and made a big contribution to stopping Wednesday coming at us as they ran their defence ragged over the 90 minutes. I was worried about the midfield in the first 20-30 minutes, but Hollands and Pritchard tightened up second half and played their part. Jackson's goal was a beauty, but his contribution over the 90 minutes was outstanding. Wiggins looks too good for this division to me; we need to get up otherwise he will be snapped up.

For the record, I have seen 7 games this season and 7 wins and only witnessed one goal against - at Wycombe Wanderers. I don't quite so much time in Asia these days, but if any fans want me to fly back on a Friday to keep my good luck charm going, it will only cost about £600 a game.
  • In my opinion Saturday is the best day of the week and January 14th 2012 must rank with the best of them.

Charlton win 1-0 against arch rivals Sheffield Wednesday

Millwall get beat 6-0 at home.

    Things can only get better!!!!
  • Yesterday was one of them games that I thought to myself, if I miss this and we win I will be regretting it for a long time.

Being straight after Xmas meant I had a decision to make. Go and the bank balance will take a bit of a hit or stay home and listen on player and save the wedge.

Ended up going and it turned out to be the best decision I've made in a while

Wednesday were pony yesterday and we done a right good old job on them
  • the whole team was superb ,we played against 12 men the whole game and we should have won 3-0 because all they created was half chances , i say 12 men cos the ref was a bias northern pr--k, and sheffield is a shithole i wanna go home.

  • Under pressure first 20, perfect time to score and the atmosphere changed. They went completely route 1 - in fact i'd say they were possibly the most one dimensional, route 1 teams i've ever seen. They play to their strengths and are also one of the most physical sides i've seen. The reality is though they have little quality and to a certain extent remind me of our squad of the last couple of years. Whereas we have bought most teams best players this year, they havea collection of cast offs although are doing well considering. Shame the train lot didn't get there but we did well with our support although admittedly, we should have been there in bigger numbers but i think the fulham jamboree had something to do with that and without it, i reckon we'd have had 3k there, minimum. CP and the team are a class act. Yes, we will play more flowing football once Stephens is back in and yes, we will win more comfortably once BWP is back in the goals but for me, yesterdays result has totally convinced me that we will go up this year. Sheff Wed fans do seem a bit dense and you don't often see a website as deluded and ignorant as Owls Talk but thats their problem. Actually think Mandaric is a confidence trickster and think they will come up short this year. Bullying teams will only take you so far and they will gradually fade.
  • Can't believe my frustration of missing the game yesterday through having a major operation on my shoulder, should have been early morning but got delayed to 1pm, got back to my room at 3:10pm all drugged up and not knowing where I was, somebody knew my interest in football and decided to put sky on, only to find there was no reception, so they put radio Kent on, and took all my vital statistics which where they should be, anyway at around 3:30 the alarms on the monitoring system started to sound, nurses, doctors come flying from all directions only to find Charlton where winning 1 nil, and my blood pressure had gone through the roof. Bloody football, doctors wanted to turn the radio off, but I managed to talk them out of it.

Well done to everyone who went up there, hoping to be fit enough to go Saturday, but there is doubt over this.

    Regards
    Kerry
  • first chance ive had since the game.
They were lucky. bwp should of scored and we had some crosses that should of been put away. Still we won. and we bloody deserved it. I havent read all the 300 odd posts on here but i'm sure its all been mentioned.
They are the most dirtiest team ive seen in years. Right bunch of rotters. no idea how to play proper football. before our goal (amazing free kick!) we were playing to their strengths, kicking the ball up in the air, then we got it down and showed those ay up chip and gravy hi ho silver prats how to foocking play. dont get me wrong they did have a few chances but it was mainly through bully tactics. lost all respect for megson for those tactics.
Great atmosphere generated from our lot, and when the goal went in i dont think ive hugged so many people.
On a postive not for the owls, hillsborough is a great stadium. never been there before. really felt historic.

great win. great performance. especially from pritchard and solly. hard press to which i give man of the match.
on another note as i was going to get the train home aload of blades fans had just come back from their trip away. A few looked at me in a threatening mannor then they all started to cheer and saying well done and see you next week. i think they will be more of challenge than that puny club they share a city with.
oh and to be powell when at full time walking away from our supporters who were all singing his name. he must of felt like a god.

I'm sure that Henry can find a few more bits & bobs to auction on here to fund another couple of trips, mate

You'd think that with all the technology available these days they'd be able to adjust their equipment to take account of these things.

I agree I was talking about their "hoof it up to the pub league players oop front" style that Megson had his team mastering so craftily.

Actually pitied them if thats the dross they watch each week and even if in the unlikely event they claw their way out of this dire league by utilising it theyll not last five minutes in the 2nd division.

There were times our own play was so flowing and intricate it would have had Ruud Gullitt requiring a change of y fronts.

Quite frankly I felt embarrassed for them.

OK, got you now - they were a bunch of thugs from the off, with only one tactic which had obviously been planned for by SCP and the team - they knew it would be talentless physicality from the Weds and we countered that with passing away from, and tenacity in, the physical battle.

  • Hamer's kicking is excellent, it is so good he uses it ambitiously so sometimes it may not come off but he can create chances and goals with his accuarcy of kick that other keepers can't. Those faulting it, take a second look and you will realise. It had to be pointed out to me but when you look for it you can see it.

Agree. I think CP mentioned something along those lines when he signed.
  • His drop kick to green in the first half was incredible tekkers

    Reina eat your heart out
  • Agreed VG couldn't believe that with backspin and all, it was more like an iron approach at the Open than a goal kick
  • As a team, we stood up to them physically & played the better football. Pritchard seems a bit of a find and will get better still as he plays more matches. Good support from the terraces, feel sorry for those that got stuck on trains.
Great performance all round and well worth the 14 hour round trip.
