I thought BWP did very well. He wad a few half-chances, but nothing of any real quality, save for the ball that he pushed past the keeper before the keeper impeded his path. Had he gone down there I think it would have been a penalty.
BWP will score goals, but not with the chances that he got on Saturday. He was looking increasingly more frustrated as the game went on, but on another day he will be given the chances to score, and he'll put them away.
Oldham closed the game out, and they have every right to do that. We got the goal we needed and they scored with the only real threatening move they had all afternoon. With Green reluctant to drop back to defend, and tucking inside, leaving Solly no outlet top release clearances to, it was only a matter of time before they broke down our right. I would have swapped Green for Wagstaff after about 75 minutes, but either way on another day we'd have won this game. I'm confident that few teams will be able to hold us by playing this way, so I'm not, really, all that worried.
It was a real bonus to discover, on my phone, in the pub later that evening that MK Dons had lost at home to Preston. I expect we've had the little spell of increasing our lead, now we need to keep it intact until we have another run of five or six wins.
With respect, I can't agree that BWP 'did very well'. We all know he is a quality player but, though there was no lack of effort from him, he had a terrible game.
I watched him disappear quickly down the tunnel at the end and I take that as a sign of his own disappointment. He may also have had the hump with the long ball tactics.
There is no doubt that since Kermo has come into the team, added to Stephens and Jackson coming out of it, we have been playing more long stuff. I think once JJ and Stephens are back in, the blend should re balance itself. I'd like to see Waggy start in place of Ephraim next game as well with Green switching wings. Solly and wagstaff link up well and help us retain the ball whilst advancing up the pitch. Not saying I don't rate Ephraim but a bit of rotation won't hurt.
Luckily, esecially with Jacko playing, goals can come from anywhere in this team - I'm inclined to agree that BWP will find his scoring boots again, sooner rather than later as he is mostly driven by his own need to score and his own self-confidence, a great striker. I think the frustration from a missed opportunity to widen the gap and our experience of the last 5 years has made us see disaster looming in every slight dip in form. Understandable, but this lot are not going to crumble as other teams have in the past. However - I do wonder where the "Clinical and ruthless" streak that we all noticed earlier in the season has gone.
I just do not think that we can cope playing with two wide men. In Jackson's absence it would be better to play with Hughes/Russell/Hollands + one wide man. Neither Hogan nor Green give sufficient support to their full backs. We can cope with one full back hanging back but not both. This is partly at least why we are playing more of a long ball game in Jackson's absence.

To be honest, I thought Kingshill - as he usually does - got it spot on. If BWP had put away one of the four/five chances he had I doubt anyone would have uttered a word of criticism.
But I do think we need to find a way of using his skills better than we did on Sat. All those long balls to 'the Warrior' did BWP few favours.
But I don't really mind the criticisms of the way we played on Sat (even though unfair, IMO). It is a mark of how far we have come since the Murray/Parkinson era and that our fans now have the highest expectations of the team is perfectly healthy and constructive in my book.

Might need a couple more games, although I'll be glad to see JJ back
Just a few short comments, some of which have been made above:
We seem to have reduced to one main tactic: high crosses. I'd like to see more variety, with practically all the players looking to make space for themselves to occasionally have a shot. Especially against a deep defence, forwards can follow up for when the goalie spills one.
Our long throws don't have enough venom to cause any problems, and they're overused. Better to keep possession.
Hamer should look to throw the ball out occasionally, so we can build from the back. This does mean that defenders need to move around more, in order to get into space.
As a top of the table team, we should be good enough to play with 2 wingers and 2 up front, especially at home. However we were outnumbered in central midfield by Oldham's 4-5-1, and they won most of the second ball. I don't know the answer: perhaps one of the centre backs playing in a more advanced position, but we definitely needed more movement off the ball.
Hughes has started 5 games, with 5 wins, mostly by big margins. SCP has said that he didn't take well to being left out against Huddersfield, but he's not even been on the bench since, including in the cup. He would have been ideal to bring on after our goal on Saturday, and I hope there's not been a serious falling out.
I don't think we've given enough credit to Dickov for carrying out his double substitution. We looked like scoring again for 5 minutes after our goal, but their subs changed it all, and they started looking the most likely to score. We only made one change, with 5 minutes to go - too little too late.
The use of subs by SCP, or rather the lack of them, is what concerns me most. We've scored most of our goals in the first half, and conceded 11 out of 16 in the second. I think that we're lacking fresh legs late on. I can understand keeping one sub in reserve in case of an injury, but we should normally be using 2 of them, and for at least 20 minutes, because it's a faster, more tiring, game than it used to be.
Not read any comments and not been on here since before the match. Was very very dissappointed with the team, the result, oldham, the reff/officials, our lack of substitutes until was too late and the fans (good numbers but rubbish noise).
Basically rubbish all round. For all the ball and crosses we put in the box other than BWP one on one their keeper didn't need to make one save, infact if you count greens wide effort, he only tried to save 2 attempts.
Dissappointed with hoof ball, although our best chances did come from the customary ball over the top. We desperately miss JJ and dale without these two we just spray the ball over the midfield and not the free flowing passing we had become accustomed to.

Christ and to think were 5 points clear at the top......Happy Christmas scruffle.........I think?

In a couple of games he could be back at QPR, his loan ends 3rd Jan

Don't get me wrong i'm well chuft with where we are and our squad esp since I got us at 14-1 to win the league outright in the summer!!
I was thoroughly pissed off with the performance of the whole club at the wknd thou, and think we were let off somewhat by wednesday conceeding 4 at home. No doubt it will have been repeated over and over again in the previous posts but we needed to make changes a lot early, some fresh legs, as soon as they made the double substitution and then came on the front foot for the last 10 min, you could tell we were going to draw, personally I thought we were going to end up losing and thankfully only for some horrendous finishing from Oldham we held on for a point. All in all away from home prob would have been happy but not at home, we are better than what we showed on Saturday.
However as I've said to many Charlton fans still think we'll get promoted just need JJ back and another striker to come in as competition/reserve for bwp in Jan and we could well go on to win it.
Yes as has been said just like last season Jackson is our talisman for whatever reason; personality, passing, poitioning (probably the lot) but I would say he has presence and is always able to inspire when things are getting tough. BWP is talented but his personality lets him down; he isnt strong mentally and that is a problem when he is not scoring. I want him on the pitch but he needs to understand it is a team effort that wins games and I wish the announcer would stop presenting his name like he was the messiah and treat him like everybody else. I think the game was ok and we were the better team but we switched off and the only reason for that is complacency and perhaps its that that jackson counters and we play better with him than anyone else. Kermorgants head did affect his performance but I dont blame him; he is easily one of our three top players; the first aid man got it terribly wrong and this seriously affected the momentum of the game. Lets be positive about saturday against yeovil and I'm going to Orient which should be a really great atmosphere.
14 goals this season. FOURTEEN! Funny how no-one was knocking his 'personality' when he got that winner in tough conditions at Brentford or when he got the necessary goals against Wycombe, or any other of the important goals he's scored. He's better than Shaun, unless he doesn't score in which case he's not fit to lace Martin Pringle's boots. Booooooooo-oh wait he's scored again, what a talent! No wait, he hasn't scored this game, why does the announcer insist on talking about him with the reverence I had for him 45 minutes ago?
