If you asked me several months ago I would have said Solly, I really didn't get the big deal, but he has won me over big time! This is from the guy who thought Francis could have been a mainstay of our current team with a bit of the Powell magic giving him confidence and a few tips from an expert mind you so I doubt my opinion counts for much!
Why did Anthony Barness fall out of favour with the management? I thought he was a good solid performer.
I just read the wikipedia article on Barness and it appears to have been written by a friend or relative who is rather bitter at the way his career declined. Doesn't shed any light on your question though I'm afraid.
Paul Mortimer - for me one of the most talented players we've ever had and will always be remembered for his performance at Millwall in the snow, plus the numerous great goals he scored. But some people thought he was lazy and useless - particularly the bloke who used to sit behind me. He had been slagging him off all game once and then Morts curled a free kick in from 25 yards and we all just turned round clapping and cheering to this idiot, who was sat slumped in the corner looking like he'd swallowed a wasp.
Alan Shearer went a long way down in my estimation, after he kneed Lennon in the face while Lennon was defenceless on the touchline. The amount of people who supported Shearer after that incident was astonishing. Regarded him as a mindless bully after that.
Claus Jensen - woman who used to sit behind me (she was a couple of seats away from Wyn Grant) used to slag him off every game - I couldn't stand her.
For me Claus was one of the best players to ever wear the red shirt - he didn't tackle like Roy Keane (which was her problem) but he was supremely skillfull & opened up the pitch with his vision & passing - a joy to watch.
Carl Jenkinson. Didn't think he was better than Solly when he left. Other than notts county away I always thought he looked like a player who one day might just make the championship.
Jerome Thomas. 1 trick pony with the occasional goal who offered nothing in any other area of the game. Cut from the same cloth as Racon.
I think the issue is that some people focus on negatives and some on positives. Leaburn was a terrific example as he clearly brought something to the team but had areas of his game that were not up to scratch. I don't think opponents enjoyed playing against him which probably says enough.
Some views are also clouded as a result of the way players leave. Darren Pitcher was a decent enough player for us but is always slagged off because of his departure to Palace.
Also am I the only Charlton fan that didn't think Mustoe and Redfearn were completely cack?
Kim Grant, now he split opinion in my group.........................
He had his limitations but I liked the fella. Still cringe at the memory of him being hauled off by Curbs to a chorus of boos even though we'd just destroyed Notts County.

Not sure about Mustoe, he never made much of an impression on me. I though Redfearn was a lot better than people give him credit for. Still remember that blinding goal at Wimbledon.
When we sold Mills to Leeds and bought Greg Shields I thought he was a quality replacement to begin with and would remain our right back for some time, but he didn't last long with us before going to back to Scotland, homesick maybe?
I thought Greg Shields had a big bust up with Curbs?
I have a feeling this was the case, though I know absolutely nothing about it. I too thought he looked really good, and thought he'd be an important part of our promotion push.
Players I liked, that many didn't, Lisbie (so unlucky with injuries, very talented) Lawrie Madden (great at left back, went on to prove it) Peter Garland (swashbuckling midfielder, with great skill and a terrific shot) David Madden (saw far too little of him, could put it on a sixpence from 40 yards) Ambrose (should have played him "in the hole" more, wasted out wide) Diawarra & Song class players enough said.
Players I didn't like, not many. Thatcher, a thug who just punted it down the line. Carl Tiler, a donkey who kept Brownie out of the team on so many occasions. Svennson, good at "putting it about" but little else, a very limited player.
I thought Kish was completely useless when he played at RB but I liked him as a midfielder. Pretty much how I feel about what I've seen of Andy Hughes so far.
I thought Jerome Thomas was quality and was always good for an important goal but some people hated him. I always wanted Rommedahl to bbe good but he just had too few instances of consistent performances.
I guess the one I have that no-one's mentioned is Gary Rowett. I know he only played 13 games but he looked absolutely quality going down the right and I was really disappointed when he couldn't play anymore. I've heard some people say that hate him because he knew he was injured when he signed and still 'let' Curbs pay all that money for him, which is frankly ridiculous.
the car hire man? .. terrific shot, trouble is he hit the target only about 5% of the time .. and corners?. ..... 1/2 never even made it into the field of play .. apart from that .. he was quick .. and useless

As I've said on other threads and before he actually played for us, I thought Darren Bent was a total waste of money.
Shows what I know.
That's why I never judge a player now until I've seen them play.

Keith Jones - good player in my book.

Keith Peacock. Not the same without the tash

They were all either not good enough or in limited cases just never applied themselves often enough whilst they were here.

Kish was like marmite with us addicks, and lisbie blew chances, but on the otherhand at least he was 'there to miss'
Was the common thoughts of those players.
Remember, remember the 5th of December...
