Players That Divide Opinions

  • Gramme Stuart used to get stick by certain sections but i always loved him. Same with Anthony Barness. You could probably add Curbs to the list as well.
  • Alan McCormack - I rated him when others didn't. Wasn't afraid to fight for the team which was different from the rest of the crap he had.
People have mixed feelings about Andy Hughes (similarly to Kish). I really rate him when he's in a winning team.
I rate Paul Hayes whilst many others don't. I also rate Ben Hamer when many others don't.

I agree about Kyel Reid. Thought he was good on loan but when we signed him, he fitted into the team of sh*ite we had.

Dennis Rohmedahl (sp) springs to mind. Lots of people thought he was rubbish whilst others thought he was brilliant. He was average to me.
  • Rommedahl, I always thought he was decent and was frustrated by the way curbs used him.
Varney was tosh, dickson was worse and mcleod was laughably dire.
Never liked Bailey, thought he was lazy and lightweight, shirked tackles and used to fall over clutching his face etc. Far too much for a hard looking footballer
  • There's a common theme with wingers. Maybe they're more likely to receive stuck because they're closer to the fans. Who knows.
  • One that has not been mentioned yet is Peter Shaw.

Appalling in his first couple of seasons in the old Division 2 but an absolute rock when we last played at this level in 80/81.

  • Bexley Dan -- some have no idea what he's like, while one rates him higher than Semedo.
  • Waggy definitely divided opinions earlier this season. I think Green has come on well with games but didn't see why so many were keen for Waggy to be dropped when we were playing well and he was scoring.
  • Laurie Madden. Sold to Millwall, given a free and ended up at the Wendys in the top flight. Won player of the year there and Wolves after..

Why can't I edit out this quote!!!!!!!!! Sorry Nicholas.
  • The Doc.
Last year I thought he played well most of the time but he got a lot of vitriol on here.

  • Grant Basey. It's a no for me.
  • Martin Pringle.

Although I'm sure most would agree that he scored some important (fairly lucky) goals when he first arrived, and was very poor thereafter.
  • Lee Bowyer is the player I used to love and loath.  Great player on his day but  caused too many problems when he wasn't playing!
  • Rommedahl, I always thought he was decent and was frustrated by the way curbs used him.
I have to agree with you there. I had such high hopes when Rommedahl joined us, but I´m not sure that curbs knew how to use him to his best. He´s still performing at the highest level for his country.
  • I think I was one of the only people that supported Ambrose...
  • Liked Ambrose. But we were playing him in the wrong position. Thought he was more effective in the centre or just behind the striker
  • Why can't I edit out this quote!!!!!!!!! Sorry Nicholas.

Ive locked in just in case anyone disagrees with anything I say :) only kidding no idea why.
  • Ross:

I'm sure that many think Leroy has made some valid contributions to this site - on occasions!!!

I found Rommedahl so frustrating.  The fastest CAFC player I have seen at the Valley but never seemed to take on his full back but would run across the pitch until he lost the ball.  Mind you he did score at Palace!!!
  • Never rated Mark Bright .

Hated - Borrowdale, Iwelumo, Bothroyd, Thatcher
  • This is such a good thread because it's amazing the difference in opinion on players sometimes. I think it partly has to do with age. Eg. the Kishishev debate. I thought he was great in midfield but earlier on he was pretty bad at RB, his tackling was awful at times. So if you saw his whole 7 (?) years for us, you could be on either side of the fence, but if you only saw post 2003/4 you'd almost certainly be a fan because of his link up play with Di Canio, Parker etc. and the only 2 goals he ever scored for us which were both pretty significant. On the other hand Euell was great for us but then faded badly, so if you only saw his last few years you'd probably remember him as a crap player.

Personally I'm glad Jorge Costa was brought up because me and the guys I had my season ticket with at the time seemed to moan at him every week. Imo he had a habit of getting in Kiely's way and there were definitely communication problems. At the time I don't think there was anyone better but he was pretty frustrating to watch. On here though people seem to remember him as totally solid.
Lisbie, to me will always be someone who we wasted far too much time and money on. It's as if every season from about 01 we said ''this will be his season" but it never was. He wasn't an awful player at all and he had moments of brilliance, just simply he missed far too many chances and by the end you knew it wasn't going to happen, you almost backed him to miss. (which is why it was such a surprise when he tore Liverpool apart) Nice bloke but we should have been ruthless and got shot of him long before we did.
  • Big Carl. Absolutely loved him, his hold up play, causing chaos in the oppo's box. One of a very small band of players who scored against Man Ure during that season we played them at Old Trafford.

Was noticeable how much we missed him when he took his opportunity and went to Wimbledon.
  • It wasn't a question of Curbishley not knowing how to use Rommedahl best. Curbishley didn't want to play 4-3-3 with Rommedahl lurking in the opposition half while we were under the cosh from good Premier League teams. He hoped Rommedahl would adapt to our way of playing but it didn't happen. It seemed like an ideal signing at the time but it wasn't to be.

Noticeably, we missed him not much at all.  Brighty & Jones plugged the gap and we got promoted

This.  We got much better as a team and went up.
  • Waggy.  Some of the vitriol about him baffles me.  I'd also say the same for Sam.

Steve jones. I thought he was cack
  • I'll agree with Alex Song, never liked him when he played for us.

I'll nominate Nicky Weaver. I liked the lad, unlike many at the club.

Are you joking? Song was class for us, what games were you watching? he was the only bit of quality we had that season ( apart from Sir Darren Bent of course) I mean look at him now

I'll admit that I didn't see every game that season so maybe I was unfortunate but literally every game I did see, Song was lazy and uninterested, as is so often the case with loan players.
