I walked out 10 minutes before the end. Haven't done that since we were thrashed 1-6 by Leeds in 2003. Watching the charlton players compared to Brentfords was like watching a slow motion car crash. Glad to be out of the competition but doesn't make up for the fact that it was a poor display. Doherty and Hughes were particularly embarrasing. I'll reserve my judgement on Alonso as that was a pretty awful performance on his debut. 2 moments in the game that summed up Hughes and Docs performance. Doc's header in the first minute which should have ended up in Sullivans arms but did the complete opposite to give away the first goal. Secondly a moment in the second half where Hughes was nursing the ball back to the half way line and then decided to chip it back into their Keepers arms under no pressure whatsoever. A poor imitation of someone trying to be a footballer. I have given Doc the benefit in the past but am struggling to come up with any positives for him now. And I still have to pinch myself when I think that he is still only 32.

  • Totally pointless cup and glad we are out. Clearly no interest shown and quite frankly I understand why. League number one priority for us this season. The only losers tonight were the fans who paid to watch it.
  • 3 newbies in the back 5 obviously haven't bought into CP's passing game. Ship them out. Evina quality, Alonso, you can see a player there but rusty. Our attacking players didn't see enough of the ball to criticise. Hughes makes Francis look like Beckenbaur.
  • I went, and came home.
Isn't that what you're supposed to do?

Hughes makes Francis look like Beckenbaur.
lol ........but then Beckenbauer wasn't a fullback.

And I suppose there are some who'll say, wait for it ......neither is Francis.

    (erm, coat)
  • Not too bothered - better out of that competition but did show me something, 1) I hope Hollands and Stephens stay fit at least until Pritchard is back and or Alonso is match fit as we are short of cover at the moment, 2) Sullivan is fine, 3) Left back cover ok, 4) Right back cover not ok although despite Preston match, I still favour Francis over Hughes, 4) Leon Cort is centre half cover, 5) Hayes needs pace next to him. Maybe Chrissy learned some more things too that will come in useful, sooner or later in the season
  • good result
  • Good post Blucher

    Ditto
  • I was one of the few that was really up for this match.  After that though, I've decided that the JPT isn't really my thing after all and I won't be going to Wemberley.

One saving grace tonight, Cerdic Evina.  Absolutely superb.

Alonso didn't so much look as though he was lacking match fitness, he looked like he was completely unfit. Very little movement from him which certainly didn't help with ball retention in midfield. Not surprising considering he's missed so much so far. Very pleased he got 90 minutes under his belt, I'm just wondering where he's going to get the chance to gain full fitness.

For me, tonight showed that a Wagstaff Hayes partnership is not going to work and isn't really viable if BWP gets injured. It may just have been that they were playing too far apart but there didn't seem to be an understanding between them. Also, Waggy's great at finding space and making the room to have a shot, but I don't think he's going to offer too much creativity in the hole. Hayes on the other hand is naturally a provider, and so perhaps it might have been a smarter bet to have them swap roles.

It's all been said about Docherty already. The thing that bothered me most about the defence (excluding Evina) is that they didn't seem to be taking too much notice of the footballing philosophy that is supposed to be club-wide. Too many long balls from them tonight and it was incredibly depressing in that it reminded me so much of how we played the last two seasons. These players might be lacking fitness and match practice, and they might be playing in a cup we're not bothered about, but it is not too much to expect them to play in line with the philosophy Powell has been hammering into them on the training ground.

I'm glad we're out but disappointed at the readiness in which we abandoned our principles.

  • Well, at least we know know he's going to give someone else a start on saturday, my guess will be Green.

The reason I know this is: The competition rules state that at least 6 players in the starting line up must have started the previous league game OR the next league game.

Taylor, Jackson, Stephens, Wagstaff & Hayes were the 5 from saturdays game, Which means at least one other who started last night farce game must start on saturday.

The only one I can see is Green. Def not Doc, Alonso or Hughes. Although Evina is looking good, So is Rhoys so can't see him being dropped. The only other change I thought might happen at the weekend is Kermit for Hayes, but as Kermit came on as a sub, this rules him out (although he could still start). Hamer to retain his shirt as well.

    Call me sherlock. ;-)
  • Crap performance but very impressed with the Brentford player who scored the 3rd. Go get him Powelly, that will give us cover in the middle.

  • :o( but cups dont matter
  • I thought the crowd were very patient with what was an all round piddle poor performance
If we'd booooooo'd it may have improved them but sitting there graciously accepting crap didn't help
I blame the crowd all the booooooooers were in their armchairs
  • Well went last night & spent most of the game smiling, nice to know we still have those hopeless performances still in us. A bit of humility is what we needed & it was well and truly served up last night. Very dis-appointed with the turn out of our fans, well done to those that went, but less than 5,000 at home for a London derby against anyone in any competition when you are top of any division is not good enough.

  • Don't care about the result, don't care about the godforsaken competition.

    Despite CP's pre-match interview, he's glad we're out.

No use dwelling, we can concentrate on the double now.

Doherty...oh dear...treading water. I worry about him being 4th choice if we do get injuries in that position.

  • OK had time to reflect, and five things stood out from last night.

    1. The team seemed to be playing to orders not to pick up any injuries.
    2. Doc can't hack it any more.
    3. Hughes is a bad full back
    4. Alonso is clearly no where near match fit.
    5. We have no real goal threat if BWP is not playing.

Of all these only 5 is important as we all know BWP is a bit fragile. The worrying thing is we seem to have no cover for him.
  • 6 Euell offers little upfront or in midfield
7 Powell could see it all going wrong and said nothing about long balls

I thought the only player who done himself justice last night was Evina. No-one else could say they had a decent game. Plus I'm a little concerned about whether our so called experienced players add anything to our squad. I thought all the over 30s (Doc, Alonso, Euell & Hughes) were woeful and our worst performers last night. I'm a big believer that the players you bring in to the squad should improve you but after now watching both Euell & Hughes a few times this season I think they look our worst players and only weaken us when they play.

Powell has made some excellent signings this season and I guess you will always get a couple wrong when you buy as many as 19 players but so far Euell and Hughes do look to be a complete waste of wages.
  • Just got the feeling we wanted out of the JPT as soon as possible. If we could have fielded a complete reserve side then we would have been happy to stay in but as we couldn't, its just a nuisance.

Agree with what's been said and my pick of the shockers were Alonso, Doherty and Hughes.

Glad we're out as i genuinely wouldn't want to get to the final of that competition. I can't take the Carling cup seriously, let alone that.

I'm sure he didn't but when Taylor had that header in the first half it looked as though he'd deliberately tried not to score.

  • Just looked up the pre-match odds on a Far East betting syndicate site;

The most backed bet was a "Triple Valley Whammy" with Charlton to lose 0-3, concede in the 2nd minute & Doherty to have a shocker.

    Floodlight failure was the 2nd.

  • 3 points on saturday and last night will be a distant memory
  • Alonso was easily the worst of a bad bunch.........with a good few others not far behind.
  • Bring on November 19th.  I wonder if they'll still be singing.
  • Only went because we had comps last night, cheers S-dog.

Can't think of one player that had a half decent game to be honest. Stephens showed a couple of decent touches, Hughes was pretty bad, Hayes showed some nice touches.

I think you can just see which players are in and around the first team and who hasn't had a game for a while which I suppose is understandable.

Alonso was trying too had to play that Holywood ball and just needed to be a bit more paitent. Was home by 10, sweet!

  • Well went last night & spent most of the game smiling, nice to know we still have those hopeless performances still in us. Ketman, I suspect that quite a few punters sensed something rather pointless and unforgettable was going to take place last night................and sure enough it did.

Plus, as you well know, it was on the box.

  • Something I forgot to add is that I would like to see Doherty shipped out a.s.a.p. and still think we need another CB as cover.

BWP was sitting in front of me and his brothers look like clones of there old man right down to the flatcaps!

  • 6 Euell offers little upfront or in midfield
7 Powell could see it all going wrong and said nothing about long balls

    Rubbish.

I was sitting behind the dugout and he was doing his nut from about 15mins in. He hammered, Doherty, Hughes and Stephens. Booted over the water bottles and ranted 2-3 times at Dyer and Mathew.

He looked to be the only Charlton employee who cared!
  • Didn't go to the game.

    Not interested in paint.

    Don't have Sky.

These were big positives for me.
  • Alonso was easily the worst of a bad bunch.........with a good few others not far behind.
He was bad....but Doherty was terrible!  Looked unfit and uncaring.
