Charlton v Sheffield Wednesday Match thread

edited September 2011 in General Charlton
It's hard to find fault with 13 points from a possible 15 so we at Preview Tower won't do that but...

The Sky game v Wednesday is the first time that we'll be matched up with one of the other heavyweight teams expected to do well in this division.  As the past few seasons have shown it not always the name teams that finish in the top 6 but this will be seen as a benchmark by both Clubs as to how they are shaping up.

Wednesday have been fantastically consistent so far in the league  Three wins out of three at home, two defeats out of two away.  Those two road trip losses were to Bournemouth and Bury so that maybe gives an indication of how well the Addicks have done so far.

The Owls will have new signing Ryan Lowe available. He scored for Bury last week and will be looking for an unusual double of scoring against the same team in consecutive games but for different clubs. Sheffield will also have two former Charlton players on the pitch.  In goal Nicky Weaver will again enjoy a warm reception from the Covered End but all eyes will be on the man from Portugal.   Reports from Weds fans suggest Jose  has started there as he played here ie hard working, tough tackling, nose bleed if goes over half-way line.   Regardless of his creative abilities Hollands and Stephens will know they have been in a game.

Charlton's line up will depend on the fitness of Bradley Wright-Philips.  If available he's almost certain to slot in alongside Paul Hayes up top.  That leaves Chris Powell with the nice problem of either sticking with Danny Green (a summer target of the Owls) or switching makeshift forward Wagstaff back to the right so as to provide a more defensively sound midfield.

Otherwise is would appear to be as you were with Hollands, Stephens and Jackson keeping their much deserved midfield slots and the back four of Solly, Morrison (an ex-Owl remember so get those first goal bets on him), Taylor and Wiggins.

Hamer now faces no opposition for the number 1 shirt (yes, we know we were being figurative) with Robbie off to colder climes and Sullivan well, just not rated it seems.

On the bench Powell will have to decide if he wants to pick an out and out striker in Benson or stick with the more adaptable Euell.  Sullivan and either Mambo or Cort will be on the bench with either Waggy or Green.  Andy Hughes or Bradley Pritchard could be given the last place.

This is a Sky game and it's a Gary Megson team.  Normally they are physical (13 yellow cards already this season), defensive but well organised so we are not expecting a goal feast.

Another 2 - 1 win to the Addicks.   Crowd  16,001

  • Aren't Beevers and McNamee at MK Dons? 2-1 win also
so they are.   D' OH  Quick edit
  • Aren't Beevers and McNamee at MK Dons? 2-1 win also
  • Nice preview.

Expect another draw to be honest.
  • man three in a row, a tough 2-1 in which are passing slowly but surely sees us overcome their more rugged approach
  • Gotta admit I'm slightly nervous about this one. Coupled with the fact we're on Sky which never bodes well we also seem to be a bit cock sure of ourselves at the moment. Not the team but more so the fans. I think on paper we're by far the better side but I can see worldy performances from that fool Morrison, Semedo and Weaver leading to a narrow defeat. If I'm totally wrong then we'll win 2-0. But for now I'll say 0-1 defeat.
  • our toughest test, however I think we'll have enough, BWP will be fit and score the winner in a 2-1 win, Jackson equalizing after we are 0-1 down at HT
  • 2-0 Charlton
  • Surely Pritchard will be on the bench along with Sullivan, Wagstaff, Cort, and Euell? BWP tweeted he was fit didn't he? So usual team but Green for waggie then.
  • Same team but Green in for Waggy and Benson on the bench.  Both on later in the game to make a real impact.  SW have been poor on the road and not scoring.  Lowe will not fit in properly yet so I'm going for a 3-0 home win!

  • They're going to be looking top prove that they are indeed title contenders, we have to get behind the boys the whole match, if we create a good atmosphere I think that will push us to win it, 2-1 the addicks, Morrison and Bwp for us and Lowe for them

  • 1-0 BWP.

Will be watching from a English bar in Son Bou, Menorca. Landlord a spanner.
  • Will watch online expect a 3-2 win
  • I need to find a bar to watch it in Naama Bay. That'll make 'her' happy.
  • Camel Bar Wss Just by the shopping centre
  • That would give her the hump.
  • 2-0 Charlton win.
  • Charlton to win 2-1
  • Wed will be there or there a bouts come the end and I expect a draw on this one. 1 - 1
  • I will be there, but with Sky also there I expect perhaps a draw 2-2. I also expect the Red card might be on view, so someone please tell Danny Green to stay calm. Henry's idea of a Morrison first goal might tempt me.

  • Once again, fans being too overly optimistic.

This is EXACTLY the kind of game we can lose. I will go for 1-1. Late equaliser from Hayes. BWP will be out injured and we will miss him up front.

We can lose any game as we have proved for many decades.  Not sure why single goal victories over a team yet to pick up a point away are "overly optimistic" but it could be a draw. or a defeat. or a win.  One of those three I reckon.
  • I think I read that two of their players have been called up for international duty and are unavailable - not sure if they are regular starters.

    Genius!

lol, that has made my day
  • It's on telly, so 5-1 to them.
  • I think Waggy will start, rest of the team picks itself. On the bench, at home, we need to be bold so Sullivan, Cort, Green, Pritchard, Benson although I expect one of the last two to miss out to Euell which is wrong imo. Will be dissappointed if at home Hughes features.

    Prediction : 3-1

Reda Johnson is away with Benin (1 Start, 1 Sub appearence)

Liam Palmer is away with Scotland U-21s (3 Starts)

  • Palmer looks a decent player so happy about that. Always thought Johnson looked a bit of liability when I've seen him so not sure if that one is so good! Gonna go for 2-2
  • Gonna spank em 4-0 fact
