  • oh dear - looks like we're stuck with him for another year !!!!!

another greedy b*****t who is happy to take our (higher) wages for a year rather than lower ones  (?) for 2 years.

    Just f*ck off will ya
There was a time when this wouldn't have been said on this site.
It's a forum and everyone's entitled to their opinion.

Lately, I feel like I'm on a Millwall forum.
  • get over yourself
  • Unlikely Hayes bill be fit enough to start before Nov, Alexis may sign, Ansah on loan so Benno will have a chance unless we spend.
  • We need 4 strikers at the moment we have 3. Powell needs to look at how he is going to play it with not long to go.

Benson I think still has a point to prove.
  • He is a very limited player, but he'll score goals at this level, 10 goals in a poor side last season showed that.

I definitely wouldn't have him regularly starting games, but this is only League 1, he could play a part.

I said a few months ago I'd be surprised if we replace all our centre backs with 4 quality players. Morrison and Taylor have to prove themselves first before we can be confident they're better. Doherty is still here. It's not even impossible that Dailly could come back.

I doubt we'll be able to get 4 top quality strikers at this level either. If Benson goes I'll expect we'll see an inconsistent young Prem loanee along with a useful but frustrating target man.
  • Scoham, How can you honestly say "I definitely wouldn't have him regularly starting games, but this is only League 1, he could play a part." ?

So what if, due to injury, he plays in the first 3 games and scores in all of them? So you'd then drop him, despite him proving you wrong?

We can all have assumptions as to who we think will do well and who is only here to fill out the squad but until they start playing regularly, we just don't know.

On a different thread, someone said that it will be BWP and Hayes as 1st choice, with benson and possibly Euell (if he signs) as 4th choice. But if we do start the season with these four players, who's to say that once things settle, Benno and Euell are not the first choice pairing? Stranger things have happened................

Agreed - He was clearly having a bad day.
  • Sky Sports reporting the move has fallen through
  • 150,000 for Benson would have been good. He's nearly 32 for f*ck sake.
You forget he scored 10 goals out of 43 games last season in LEAGUE ONE.
Fair enough he tries, runs for every ball, but id bite anyones hand off for 150,000 and put it towards a younger more prolific striker and get another on loan.
    SIMPLE.
  • Jake- that is not 43 starts, so is an unfair statistics. He scored some vital goals last season and won us a lot of points (as did BWP). 150k is not a great deal when you consider that.

  • A striker is only good when he gets the ball in dangerous places. Benson didn't many chances last season and converted a fair percentage

Example of this was Darren Bent with Danny Murphy who passed beyond defenders.

Good crosses may mean Benson scores more.

Could we all reserve judgement until the next two games have been played with the preferred team starting and see how it goes?
Yes and no - it doesn't explain how BWP can continue his goalscoring form.  For me Benno will score if you get a lot of early balls into the box, but personally I don't think he's good enough to build a whole system of play around, not when you have BWP as well.  He proved me wrong last year though and showed he can learn a different way.  I think this could be a good year if indeed he does hang around.
  • danny green has already started to get the ball in early to benno! well thats what the comentary said v aldershot! just like john still said!! ;-)
  • I know that this may be controversial, but, prior to last season, BWP was not a prolific goalscorer.  This may be explained by the fact that he is now playing at a lower level, but to say that he is definitely going to give us 20+ goals may be a bit premature.  I saw him quite a few times when he was at Southampton (admittedly in the championship), and he did not give the impression of being prolific then.   I hope that BWP is our 20+ scorer, but we may need Benno to provide the extra fire power, so I hope he stays.
  • Rumour up Notts way that Benson could still be joining County.

    Lets hope so!!
  • Earlier this year, I would have been happy to see him move on; and I wouldn't have been surprised if he were swept out of the door by the new brush that has done for most of our players from last season.  However, given that we are a bit short in the striker department at the moment and that we have brought in Green (who he had a productive period with at D&R) I agree with those on here who feel that he may have an important part to play this season in getting us goals, although it may very well be from the bench.

I hope people get behind him and give him a chance.  As Uie said....get the early cross in and let's see what he can do with it - sticking it in the net would be the favoured outcome, obviously!
  • Latest news is that the deadline (originally today) has been extended for further negotiation.

If as suspected the holdup is the 3 years vs 2 plus 3rd based on appearances, I can't see what's taking so long.  I guess we either offer the deal and he comes or we don't and he doesn't.

With all this 'leaking' of info, I'm beginning to wonder if he's hoping another London based club will come in for him.  It definitely wasn't us that released the info that the deal had fallen through based on failing to agree personal terms.  I hope it's not that he never really had any intention of coming whatever the deal.

I'd still be really happy if he did sign though, I'm just not holding my breath!
  • Rich Crawley just tweeted

Don't know if this is out yet, but Paul Benson staying at #cafc.
  • With his history then benno will be gone
  • I don't think so nth lon...I think if he were joining us it would have been sorted by now.

  • Last I heard he was still considering the situation I don't think he will be an addick this season

If Orient offer him a similar deal you have no chance.
  • Agree with you Clem.
  • I don't see how earlier people was slating him for holding out for a 3 year contract instead of a 2. If he went for a 2 and then didn't get a 3rd then he would of moved his family away for 2 years where he could stay here for another year, keep his family setled and hope for a new contract or one with a more local team when he is on a free. There's only 1 year difference between county and our contract, there would be literally no point.

too be fair Benson's going nowhere according to Waggy!
  • Definately not going now: http://www.cafc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10267~2401850,00.html

    All happy in the camp!

  • Possibly the board had a change of heart and we "found" the cash for another striker/CB without having to sell Benson?

I for one am pleased as Benson would be easier to sell than replace and I would certainly not have said that 9 months ago so fair play to him.

Is this where Wagstaff comes in?
  • Said in the paper today Burnley were on the verge of signing a winger can't remember who is was though, so I doubt very much they'd still be after Waggy if they were at all.
