James Mclean has reiterated what a monumental bellend and hypocrite he is. He clearly has no problem with around 50% of his salary ending up in the HMRC coffers as various forms of taxation. If West Brom have anything about them they should publicly penalise him for idiotic disrespect. If the republican cause is so dear to his heart he should go work for sinn fein, where perhaps they'll remind him how many staunch Irish republicans served in UK forces in both 20th century wars, to put his juvenile gesturing into perspective.
Sammy Morrow done the same thing in the FAI Cup final for Derry, when he turned away from tricolour during Amhrán na bhFiann in 2008 , I'm sure some of those criticising James Mclean would be calling Morrow a hero.
Derry's in the United Kingdom - so presumably Morrow is a British man, making his living in Britain so there's a pretty clear difference with McClean who self identifies as Irish and has chosen to move to England to make money.
According to the Good Friday Agreement he has the right to identify himself as British or Irish or both. FYI.
"McClean was not partaking in violent protest or vandalism, merely performing a form of anti-protest. His action affected no other party and caused no damage. It was merely a demonstration of his beliefs, namely that his conscious cannot bear to celebrate the jingoism surrounding a country that shot dead 13 civilians in Derry in 1972. McClean was born in Derry.
Furthermore, this whole 'go home if you don't like it' nonsense is pretty sneery stuff. So because you believe that Britain, through its long history of colonialism, oppressed vast swathes of the world, you should not be allow to work within its borders?
Celebrate the actions of the army in fighting against those who contravene human rights, only to decry those who dare to use the right to free speech in a peaceful manner. The new British way."
Load of old tosh. Just another excuse being made for those who for some reason like to separate themselves from being British through fear of being seen as 'right wing'.
Wonder if those people who lived through World Wars for this country would be saying things like "I'm glad they are using their freedom to disrespect this country, thats what it was all about". My guess is probably not.
Not too sure if I'm bothered about it one way or another. It makes no difference as to how I react to GSTQ.
At least he has some principles he's prepared to stand up for and the subsequent abuse and ridicule. Indeed, I thought his well written justification to Wigan fans and their Chairman showed a great deal of respect.
Curb-it, however, was well out of order. Poor, poor Colin.
I'm wondering if the national anthem wasn't about the royals would that make a difference to him? Personally I don't ever sing the national anthem due to it's sentiment and also the fact that it's the British national anthem not the English one which is what I am.
I may have dreamed it, but I have a feeling I have heard England fans booing and whistling and such like, when other national anthems have been played before football matches.

Organiser will know better than us, but I'm pretty sure England fans are the most respectful when it comes to stuff like that.
I think personally all the angst that is being shown towards him is what get people like McLean hard and covered in sex wee, and the best form of erectile dysfunction for pricks like him is to just say that the nation you despise so much acknowledged your protest and ignored it and wishes you good will
My dad fought in the war for Britain like many other Scots people. The amusing abuse Scots people get on forums like this indicate the hypocrisy of those who waffle on about respect. You dont deserve respect.
FWIW I think this latest act by McLean is over the top, I understand his reasons for not wearing the poppy but it's not exactly a big ask for him to stand there during a 60 second anthem and face the same way as his team mates.
He's not being asked to give Camilla Parker Bowles a rim job FFS.
That being said I can also see why he would not want to identify with a country where some people are so wilfully and maliciously ignorant on what is such a sensitive historical issue.
McLean and most of the Nationalist community don't see themselves as British, they consider themselves Irish - and as the Good Friday Agreement declares - are within their rights to do so.
The British community in the north must be afforded exactly the same respect with regard to being UK citizens, no lasting peace can be achieved whilst one group tries to force a foreign identity on the other, it simply will not work.
The same thing applies to the Armenians in Turkey, the Palestinians in Israel and so on and having been to both places I would not want to tell either of them that they only "self identify" as Armenians or Palestinians.

I'm proud to be British. I dislike a lot of our history.
I feel sick every time I think of the British lives lost in war. I don't usually wear a poppy.
People's views aren't always that simple. Why are we assuming McLean "despises" the country?
And while McLean can defend his stance in a reasonable, eloquent and non-aggressive manner, the other side gets sneery and confrontational. It does nothing for your arguments and makes people equate patriotism with jingoism - which shouldn't have to be the case.

I'd concur, however, to feel that strongly, I'd expect him to want to earn his crust elsewhere. Or perhaps he is just sticking two fingers up to everyone and taking us much money off the English as he can.
I hope they dig out the exact taxes he pays to the British Government and use them to fund a new WW memorial outside his house and drape them in the Union flag - a daily reminder for the prick.

Yeah, coz wee never hear a murmer from anyone else when GSTQ gets sung do we

Even the Scottish and Welsh booed it last time we played them.
I notice my original comment got a few 'Lols'. I still stand by the fact when we play Eastern European teams & Spain and Italy, England are a lot more respectful towards national anthems.

OK, so everybody does it, including the English. No nation can call out other nationalities on this kind of thing because it would be hypocrisy. Hang on, people do call out others so hypocrisy is rife everywhere. Maybe people are annoyed because this particular act by James Mclean, labelled as hypocritical by some, was out there and exposed rather than in the anonymity of a crowd.

Perhaps the daily reminder already comes in knowing the families of 6 innocent individuals killed by the army on Bloody Sunday.
There have been atrocities on all sides with regard to the north of Ireland.
He eloquently expressed respect for those who were killed in the World Wars (WW as you say), including a huge number of Irish from both sides of the border.
Other than that, I think @ThreadKiller has summed it up as eloquently as needed.

Innocent victims - yes the Irish Republican Army know all about them.
Fuck him.
Edit - I seem to remember a few Irish flags flying at The Valley during Kinsella's days, and beyond. Did that cause any grief ? Nothing I remember. Yet this nause won't look at the British flag.
