[cite]Posted By: Granpa[/cite]For me this is another piece of the jigsaw puzzle which is the owners plan to take us back where we belong, doing it properly rather than just quickly. We now have the Board and the Management team in place, now we move towards Summer when the playing Squad will get all the attention.
If true, this.
There was a bit of a debate on here yesterday about Powell's inexperience needing the support of a director of football, not to overule him, but as a mentor he could trust and use as a resource of experience and advice. Lo and behold, within 24 hours this story pops up.
Let's hope it is true and JV can play the role some of us were espousing the need for on CL yesterday.
This is very puzzling. I note that Mr Vetere has not appeared to have stayed very long at any of his previous appointments apart from Rushden and Diamonds. Not too sure what his role was at Charlton previously, but Grant Basey speaks highly of him....... I have not heard of him being in any particular previous specific role 'working with the youth team' at Charlton as quoted. He has no great football playing pedigree, but he is described as an 'encyclopedia of football knowledge' - so was my grandad, so what does that prove? I think that his claim to fame was beating Liverpool to sign a 16 year old Ghanian named Danny Opare in 2008 whilst he was scouting for Real Madrid. This player made 6 appearances for Real Madrid in 2 years before being sold to Standard Liege. Are we getting a bit 'top heavy' here and creating roles for the sake of it?
As much as the anti-"cockney mafia" brigade got on his back, I imagine they appreciate Jonas and Coloccini. Not to mention the signing of Bassong, who would probably still be in their starting XI now if it wasn't for him getting the hump with them getting relegated and upping sticks to Spurs.
This is an excellent appointment by the Club, well respected by Curbs, Varney & Murray. A huge amount of contacts at home & abroad, can only be good for the club long term. I am sure a few twats on here will find fault though.

That's my thought as well. I don't get the cockney mafia thing, wasn't that more directed at Ashley & Wise?

Vetere was dumped in the same boat, as was anyone in authority that wasn't Kevin Keagan pretty much. Geordies are thick aren't they.

Especially as Ashley is from Buckinghamshire. I guess we're all the same to them!
Can't believe anybody could do a better job than Phil chapple has over the last few years. His contacts in that lower eastern england hotbed have been priceless. Without them we wouldn't be where we are today......

Chapple is still with the club as chief scout isn't he?
Doesn't do any harm in having Chapple scout the lower divisions and Vetere looking for more extravagant signings if we have money which the owners want to invest

I really hate this "cockney mafia" shit. Media generated nonsense of the worse kind that is subscribed to by idiots who can't think for themselves. If this appointment is true and it helps Charlton then I care not.
This was what Villa said when they appointed him in November. To me it can only possibly be good news. You don't start going for a Prem type set up, if you expect to be knocking around In League 1 :-
Houllier hails arrival of new chief scout Vetere

Gerard Houllier hopes the appointment of new chief scout Jeff Vetere will help cast Villa's talent-spotting net wider.
Houllier is delighted to secure the services of Vetere, who arrives with an impressive CV having worked at Real Madrid, Newcastle, West Ham and Charlton.
The Villa boss revealed a number of candidates were interviewed for the post, but the 44-year-old's multilingual skills and wide network of contacts stood out.
"He knows football inside out," said Houllier. "He's got a lot of people and a good network and can speak several languages because now you need to have scouts that can travel. He will work closely with me.
"I must say I was impressed because a lot of the people I interviewed were good, but the little details made all the difference."
Houllier is keen to improve the structure of Villa's player recruitment network in order to unearth hidden talents at home and abroad.
"We needed to have a structure and somebody who has got a network," added the manager.
"I'm not talking about the players that we know, but it is good to have someone who knows that this one is at the end of his contract, this one is available or we should have a look at this one.
"Initially I prefer to have English players, but English players are usually more expensive than the rest.
"If you look at some teams like Bolton and Blackburn they have players from everywhere in the world now, so you need to have networks practically in all continents."
Vetere was born in Luton to Italian parents and spent time as trainee at Luton Town before embarking on a semi-professional career in England and Spain.
After achieving his UEFA 'A' license, a low-key coaching career followed before he moved into scouting and player recruitment.
It is a job that has taken him all over the world, casting an eye on players for a variety of clubs.
Now he is relishing his new role as part of Houllier's backroom team, as well as expanding Villa's scouting network.
"It is fantastic to be at Aston Villa and I am very excited about working here," he said. "I have been here just over a week and I was at the Birmingham and the Fulham games.
"We have a good base of young players here through the academy who are pushing into the first team. It is a very good base that we can build on.
"We are in the process of setting up the overseas scouting system. It is an area that Villa can improve in.
"Even if you are going to sign English players, you need to know what the market is like abroad
Still no more news on this since the Mail piece. If he comes in on the scouting side then it is certainly a statement but I'm still not sure how he is a Director of Football or even less he is, at 44 and no management experience a mentor to Powell.
Will have to see the job description first IF it happens.

Not sure what it means or adds to the debate.
Oh dear.
Excellent news for the club. Can't see any reason to moan about this... but good to see a few on here still are!
I'd prefer Barca ones
