He's worked at Real Madrid as well. Hopefully a good appointment who will target the right players CP wants for next season. And maybe a few promising youngsters as well.
Wasn't he our acclaimed chief of scouting at one point for a while? I know he was at Real Madrid for a couple of years. Suprises me about his involvement with newcastle though.
Curbs always spoke very highly of him when they were both here. Interesting appointment and one that wouldn't have come cheaply, perhaps an encouraging sign of our intent going forward. Why appoint someone like him if you don't intend spending any money on players?
honestly don't know what to make of this. Obviously trusted by Jimenez and has a good reputation both here at the club and elsewhere. BUT do we just want Tony's cronies and is he really necessary?
Great appointment, when was the last time we had a decent signing? Daily last season?
As for the claims that the new owners won't spend money, what a load of old shite. They spent 300k in January and the only way they can get a decent return on their investment is by getting us out of this league, and to do that they need to invest in the squad. No matter how much good work they do off the field, a poor first team will ruin it all.
[cite]Posted By: No.1 in South London[/cite]Excellent appointment (if announced), he has a huge network of contacts both in this country and abroad.
This would suggest that there is money to spend in the summer.Jeff, as has been mentioned, is the oracle as far as knowledge of players especially overseas is concerned. As has been mentioned he will not come cheap and i am very pleased as it looks like the squad will get seriously improved in the summer.
When I see it on the OS then I will give it some credence : - )
But if it is true then an interesting move.
Lots of contacts in world football but do we need a scout as director of football? What exactly would his role be? Where does it leave Phil Chapple? He's moved around a lot from Club to Club, what impact has he had at any of them? Was at Newcastle and was not universally praised for his contribution there. At Villa a lot of money has been spent on players without much resulting success - is that him or the managers?
For me it comes down to two things.
Where does JV fit in with Chris Powell? Someone Chris has chosen or agreed to his appointment and who will work for Chris and so lighten the load or someone appointed by the board to takeover some of Chris' role which could lead to conflict?
What is the budget? Division three Clubs don't usually have international scouts or Directors of Football. If this news is true then it does point to money being spent but how much and is it being spent in the right way? We already have Tony Jiminez who was said to be bringing his many contacts in football to the Club. And we have four first team coaches and a chief scout.
Interesting times. I'll wait and see what, if anything, Slater has to say about this appointment and how it fits into the Club's long term strategy (whatever that is!)
For me this is another piece of the jigsaw puzzle which is the owners plan to take us back where we belong, doing it properly rather than just quickly. We now have the Board and the Management team in place, now we move towards Summer when the playing Squad will get all the attention. Of course for us right now, after some dreadful seasons, it is frustrating but methinks that I can see a very bright light at the end of the tunnell. Keeping the faith.

I think BWP has been a deent signing so far. You mentioned spending money in January and forgot we signed the leagues top scorer (at the time, can't be bothered to look up now), he's scored a few for us as well, just so you know.
My concerns are the here and now. CP needs help and support in this season, because we cannot allow the season to dive below where we are at currently. If this guy can support CP great, if he is here for tomorow and that takes some pressure off CP great, but if there is no help for CP out of it now, then its a nothing appointment in the short term.
This is another appointment that adds to the board and management that have no knowledge of this league and for all the worldly international contacts he and Jiminez may have no one knows about our oposition or the players that could get us out of here.
CP needs help, his confidence must be shot to piences and he must be wondering is he is up to the job, he needs a steady hand to reassure him that he is and help him turn it around and he needs that now.

We've only had him for a couple of months, too early to say weather he's been a good signing or not (At the start of the season Leeds fans thought Lloyd Sam was a good signing). I think he will be.
Strange and interesting appointment. HI has covered most of my views.
What we do know is he was very well respected by Curbs, and Curbs is very well respected by the vast majority of us so in that respect it is a positive.
Whether necessary for a League One club, or another unecessary figure eroding the potential budget for playing squad ? Well have to wait and see. People though don't give up roles at established Premiership clubs to drop down to League One for no reason, so he is either going to have increased influence to what he is used to, or his percentage cut out of successful transfers is going to be pretty chunky.
Now for the purely speculative part.
Vetere is fluent in 4 languages and from what i believe, very well connected abroad.
Rightly or wrongly, what i now expect through Vetere and Jiminez is a pretty sizeable amount of player movement over the next 1-2 years, probably bringing either young players unable to force their way into Prem first teams, or overseas youngsters seeking a way into English football. Polish them up, sell on for profit.
Wouldn't rule out the possibility in our opaque structure of someone having links to a 'sports management agency' and a lot of our arrivals coming through this route.
Signs point to us an interesting year ahead of us, though understandably there is little conviction at this stage of it being successful.

Remember in China there is a curse "may you live in interesting times" : - )
A more upmarket version of Crewe is not necessarily a bad thing but while signing foreign players will seem more glamorous than say, kids from Essex, it doesn't guarentee success or hope to forge a bond between fans and the players. Not because the players are from overseas (many of our fondest idols have been Johnny Foreigners) but because they will be seen as being on a conveyor belt of talent who won't stick around.
Still better than a conveyor belt of non-talent who don't stick around which is where we seem to be right now.
Having read all of the posts above I can only see it as positive (assuming its true of course! Not a fan of ANYTHING printed in the Daily Mail). I think it says a lot about the club's ambitions and longer term strategy. I think it means they will be taking player acquistion seriously and development and, again, it seems to state that the plan is a longer-term thing. I suspect that the new owners have developed, what in business, is often called a 5 year Strategic Plan that they are going to adhere to and not take any tactical decision that might compromise it - hence the reticence at getting in any quick fixes in the form of short-term loans. That may change if we get anywhere near the relegation zone which could compromise the 5 year plan. So I really do think that (per the other thread) this season has been 'written off' and everything (including this apparaent appointment) is aimed at the longer term plan. I really hope it points to an exciting summer break with a re-built team that is a genuine contender to win the division and get us moving in the right direction.
Or it's a panic decision based on the slump in results and "failure" to bring in any more loan players or jobs for the boys.
Personally I doubt that it is either of those but JV has never been part of any long term plans, 4 months at Villa, 4 months at Real Madrid, under 2 years at Newcastle, not sure but around 2 years with Charlton, a year-ish with West Ham.
OK, not all down to him that he moved on but so many unanswered questions starting with "is it true?".

The full-back Grant Basey, who broke into the first team in 2007 at the age of 19, has credited Vetere with his development
Has apparently left Aston Villa as CS tonight to be D of F at cafc.
God knows we need somebody to find us some players.

My slight concern is that I'm hoping he's here to work with and help CP and not to overrule him....

Hopefully we'll be signing young Messi-esque Argentinians which we can sell on for £30m in a couple of seasons when we've won the Champions League

i think the non talent is sticking around , hence our complete chuffness
