And a right back than can get near enough to cut out a cross
Grateful of the number 2 (Francis?) who cleared the effort that hit the post in the last minute- the same player incidentally who i've noticed can put in a decent cross and is pretty mobile on the ball
elliot great save from PK but his kicking is poor. fry didnt have a good game. francis....well, it porbably looks like im picking on him but he is dogsh*t. racon and semedo played well first half but second half were poor. anyinsah had a day to forget really. thought daily and doherty played well, one alot of headers.
its difficult when u go two up away from home because i thought we sat back way too much and the two goals after halftime were crap because we didnt come out 2nd half. anyinsah missed a sitter straight after they scored which i think would have killed them off. on another day we would have won 3-1
all in all a decent point, a great weekend and spent £300 in the strippers
Ah the good old days... Tuesday night student night at Spearmint Rhino Sheffield... free entry, 4 bottles for a fiver and half price private dance... midweek at Hillsborough next season I hope! EDIT: or Bramall Lane!
Just watched the highlights and a couple of points about Simon Francis, who seems to be the main point of derision on here amongst some folks....
1] He saved us a point with that brilliant clearance from almost right on the goal-line when the header in injury time hit the post, without his clearance it was a tap-in for their centre-forward.
2] Francis put in a great run and cross earlier on, with the score at 2-2, that so nearly ended with an own-goal from Purse, with Weaver making a great save.
Francis has limitations, name me a League One player that does not, but he made some critical contributions today.
[cite]Posted By: ValleyGary[/cite]all very well watching the highlights, perhaps if you watched the 90 minutes then your view might change of francis.
im all for getting behind the players when they wear a red shirt but he is starting to push me to the limit.
So, his point saving clearance - when none of the other defenders had even reacted - counts for nothing, eh?
The sad fact is that we sold a class RB (at this level) for a much needed 400K and with no cash available Simon Francis is the best that PP - or any other manager for that matter could bring in.
When you're shopping at Netto's you ain't going to be buying another Johnny Humphrey. Your choices are the grey brigade (Dailly, Doc), the taletned but flawed (Anyinsah) or those who are very inconsistent like Francis.
I have seen him play live a few times and I agree that he can be very careless in possession but he also gets forward pretty well and can - on occasion - get in some great crosses, we have scored a few goals from his deliveries this year already.
right place at the right time....good positioning and well done. the ball came of the post and he was there, good defending on that occasion.
lets look at his other contributions. yes he put in a very good cross which their player nearly turned into his own net but he got caught in possesion more than once, and im not talking a quick touch and then tackle, he literally had the ball for 10 seconds and looked confused. He has the touch of a wall. He allowed too many crosses into our box in dangerous areas. Im not fooling myself into thinking we are going to have cafu playing for us but a bit of quality is still affordable in L1. Francis has none.
but then you probably saw that from the highlights.
Francis has had some good games this season, but it's nearly always when he's able to get properly involved in the attacking side of the game. His crosses can often fly high wide and handsome, but I think that is because he's trying to deliver the perfect ball all the time but consequently, when he gets it right, they are very hard to defend against.
Unfortunatley, he has some big flaws in the defensive side of his game and I think he is a major reason we concede so many. It's a fair criticism imo that he doesn't work hard enough to cut crosses out at source and, as I've said before, he walks a fine line between calm & collected and over-casual & sloppy which can lead to careless passes and clearances which again invite pressure and can create chances for the opposition.
He has the raw materials to be a good player and he will now be working under one of the most defensively assured full backs Charlton have ever had so there is a chance he will learn and improve. I do worry though that he'll always have that sloppy edge to him as that is probably more a character trait than a footballing skill that can be taught. As a player that is already on the laid-back side, I'm not sure the lack of competeition for the right back berth has done him many favours either. I think it would nice to see some competition signed or Jenkinson given a couple of games to remind Frank his place isn't totally assured.
the defence is definitely the area CP will need to sort out if we are to secure a play-off position and have a pop at automatic
as nobody could answer my question re: the last clean sheet, I checked and it was Barnet in the Cup or Swindon in the league both back at the start of November.
we won't be going anywhere with stats like that so hopefully CP can tighten things right up at the back

Nice last line, you're all class aren't you?

I know you haven't been on here that long and that your efforts to date have been somewhat underwhelming but do try to at least show some manners, if only out of respect to the people who bust their arses keeping this site going.
Can someone who was there tell me where Wagstaff played on saturday. Did he play in same position as against spurs , basically as a second forward between midfield and the striker. I have often thought he could operate well from here and I don't think he played wide as a youth. Maybe Damian Mathews influence? His marks seem to be good so something worth persevearing with
First post - being in Leeds don't get too many games but took my son to this one (I'm not letting him grow up to be a Leeds fan!)
Amazing start which made Hillsborough as quiet as a cathedral apart from the Charlton fans. Ayinsah held the ball up well and his pace and strength worried their CB. Played good football and passed it around, albeit we did sit back a bit. Penalty didn't seem to be for much but save was fantastic.
Second half was a nightmare - how we held on for a point I'll never know. They came out got 2 quick goals and the whole of hillsborough woke up, we lost all confidence and couldn't string 2 passes together, while they really fed off the atmosphere. Take note regular Valley attendees!
Sodje is a complete waste of space - he doesn't appear to have any pace, didn't hold the ball up at all and for a bloke of that size was constantly muscled off the ball by their CB - the complete opposite of ayinsah. If only he could stay fit. I agree with other posts that we didn't seem to close the wide men down and stop them getting crosses in. The full backs seemed to play quite narrow, possibly to stop balls down the side of our two CBs who aren't very quick. Once the ball went out wide they both seemed a bit slow to close down.Having said that I didn't think Francis played too badly but as often mentioned he did give the ball away several times with really sloppy passes and once by dawdling on the ball when we were in a really good position. You can't really blame dailly and doherty - they won most crosses but the sheer number coming in meant that eventually someone would get on the end of one. From the poor view at the far end together with the roar that went up I was convinced they had scored in injury time - definitely a point gained.
The Sheff Weds penalty ........before the ball is kicked, there are 4 Charlton players and one from Sheffield Wednesday who have encroached into the box.
