[cite]Posted By: PaulCAFC[/cite]We are becoming like the Geordies and the Scousers - only wanting to support a manager that has been a past legend. King Kenny, King Kev the Messiah, Bobby Robson and demanding Alan Shearer, but not too many of these have worked out in the long run. My head goes above the parapet and no doubt someone will see this as an opportunity to throw abuse if they don't agree, but actually I don't give a flying!
Hmm. Yes. Kenny Dalglish: 3 titles and 2 FA Cups. Kev Keegan - took Newcastle into the Champions League and Bobby Robson? Sir Bobby Robson? Are you having a laugh?
Yes, I'd like to experience some of that kind of failure.
[cite]Posted By: PaulCAFC[/cite]And if the appointment of an inexperienced manager does not work - what then?
Yes, but the so-called experienced managers we have appointed have got us relegated twice! I do not think he will do as badly as they have! Time will tell.
Look, I can see some reservations (to a point), it will be his first job, of course, BUT, every manager has that the first time around. Can you not see the positives in this appointment?
I think you are doing Chris Powell and our new board a massive disservice. He has his coaching badges, he was the PFA representative and commands the respect of every player and manager out there. Sven says he is ready to manage and will be a great manager, everyone within the game thinks the same thing (bar none). He will bring passion back into our club which will immediately restore the fans support/belief. We will have a fortress once again. I could go on but that will do.
Spot on. There are risks. Curbs was joint player coach before he became joint manager before he became manager. He had no prior experience. Lennie was reserve team coach when he took over.
Liverpool have just sacked the Manager of The Year who as been described by some Addicks as a total muppet.
Ian Holloway, everyone favourite second club manager screwed up at Leicester and was sacked.
I could list others. There is no crystal ball which can determine who will succeed and who won't and experience isn't always the key.
It is a risk. There is no risk free option.
I think this is an excellent decision. We have to play our part by giving him time and the team our full support.

I was thinking that earlier. Got burnt with pardew

I will try to explain my personal view. We started the season financially threatened, and felt that promotion was our only survival strategy. Every defeat was a nail in the coffin. New owners come in and the financial pressure eased off, and this left us looking at Parky, and remembering Northwich, and recently Walsall, Colchester and Swindon, and reflected on his style of football, and his choice of player...even if we had somehow won promotion under Parky, does anybody think the subsequent euphoria would have stopped him having to leave in the summer?
However we had to deal with the blow of Swindon, and if he didn't leave now on the back of recent results, a new regime, and the transfer window...then when?
So we have some financial stability, and need to look at the rest of the season and beyond, and given we are not going to get O'Driscoll and the like...any of the suggested names would be a gamble. I would prefer to gamble on Chris Powell than experience in the form of Wise, Johnson and any others, and I feel that this appointment is for the long term, and with stability promotion is not the imperative it was at the start of the season.
I will support Chris, warts and all, because I want to help him to achieve what I believe we both want, and I reckon it will be enjoyable doing so.
Seth, what are you on today? Second time I've read a post from you in the last two hours and scrapped waht I was going to write because you had already said it. Spot on analysis, how we got here, where we are at this moment and where we can now go - all in 200 words.
And Paul: ''I hope this appointment works if it happens'' - what on earth does that mean? Try and share the joy of the best day to be a Charlton fan in the last five years. We've got our soul back...
[cite]Posted By: CAFCdamo[/cite]haha , love it
even the "we hate chris powell thread" has turned into a Sir Chrissy Powell love in!
But it's not a "we hate chris powell" thread, is it? You can love the guy and still think this is the wrong decision.
Ah !! Just like some of us could say Parky was a good guy but a crap manager eh ;-)
Absolutely! Just not on the Thanks Parky thread.
If the Chris Powell for Manager thread is being officially designated the Chris Powell love in thread, or if we have a "Welcome Chris Powell" thread once it is officially confirmed, then it would be polite for those of us with reservations to voice them here, to avoid pissing on the chips of those who are euphoric about it. If it's just a general discussion thread, then there's no reason why all different points of view shouldn't be represented there, as long as differing opinions are respected. There's no reason to call people c*nts just because they disagree with you (not that you did, unfortunately the same can't be said of everybody).
Even if this does turn into a bad decision... So what, he deserved to have had the oppertunity to give it a go right? Don't get me wrong I will be disapointed but I will never hate Powell or wished we would have tryed somebody else.
Got to be given time whatever happens. We've got to start all over again. If we sneak promotion this year then great but if don't then the board mustn't panic.
I remember going to Pride Park to watch us play Derby in the Premiership. We had just signed Chris Powell from Derby. When his name was announced before the kick off the Derby fans gave him an ovation and then gave him another when he was substituted near the end. And that after helping us to a 2-0 win! The fact is that the man commands respect wherever he goes. Yes, he is inexperienced but he also has his coaching qualifications. If anyone can get the best out of our squad of players then it is CP. This might well be as an inspired appointment as was Sir Curbs.
If I'm honest I wasn't as overjoyed as most when the news broke, purely re. lack of experience and fear of tarnishing such wonderful memories. However, if people are true to their word, are patient, and back him while he imposes his ideas, then the euphoria and togetherness the appointment's created could carry us a long way on their own. It'll be intriguing seeing who he brings in with him; Damian Matthew is certainly highly thought of. So, a fresh, exciting start. We know he understands exactly what the whole Club stands for. Wouldn't it just be bloody marvellous if he could bring us even close to what we took for granted while he was here? Count me in - CHRISSY POWELL'S RED & WHITE ARMY!
If you don't think it's the right decision , do the club and Chris Powell a massive favour and don't go to the matches.
The last thing the club and the new management team need is the negativity that has been hovering over The Valley in recent times.
Lets get behind the Legend that is Chris Powell because it's about time we did our bit by cheering on the team and the manager.
It's not only the team that has faded in recent years , the atmosphere that The Valley that has gone too. lets change that.
Great player, great bloke, but who knows as a manager ????
Totally wrong appoitment for us at this time. We need to get out of this diviosn and we look like appointing someone who has not managed a team in his life (apart from a week or two as a caretaker). We need someone who knows this league, knows how to get out of it and also the players avaialble.
and if it all goes tits up, I cant see the north stand calling him a c**T, booing or calling for his blood, giving him carte blanche to do what he likes

Chris Powell is back and so is the old golfie. Excellent.

Brilliant Golfie!! I've really missed the old you. LOL.
Most important thing is that Chrissy Powell and the team are greeted by a newly positive and reinvigorated atmosphere at the Valley on Sat week which allows the XI on the pitch to ''express themselves'' (horrible cliche, I know, but the thing about cliches is we all understand what they mean.)
100 per cent confident this will happen with knobs on - and it will lift everyone, bar a little group of Parkinson fans in the corner saying,'' our man could have done this''. And Golfaddick, who should probably be placed in quarantine in a stand all of his own, as you could hardly seat him safely with the PP lovers, could you ?? !!
I wanted an experience manager but I was wrong to predict that Taylor and Burley would do well at palace due to their experience. I also have to realise that we're a third division side and therefore won't get the cream of the litter. I would've wanted Powell to manage a lower league team to test out how good he was before coming to us, but we are the lower league team now. Some recent first club appointments have turned out very well in this league, Martínez and Adkins being fine examples.
[cite]Posted By: jazzyjazzyjazzy[/cite]Even if this does turn into a bad decision... So what, he deserved to have had the oppertunity to give it a go right?
I think this is it. If he's going to start a career in management it's going to have to start in the lower leagues and it feels right in this situation that it's us who are giving him the chance. If it doesn't work out the board have the finances to get someone new in, it's not as risky a move as it was last year. This league is so poor that relegation is highly unlikely, although not impossible.
I would like to see him partnered with an experienced assistance, Keith Peacock fits the bill perfectly in my mind.
Initially I don't think it's the right move but have started to sway after reading jazzyjazzyjazzy's comment! I will back the manager and the team 100% as I would've if Wise came in.
i think that the powelly love in is right for those that wish, those that have stated genuine affection for the man but query the decision are proberly just verbalising the doubt all of us have.
the reasons i am convinced chris powell is the man is that i believe it, i believe it is more than just a new manager, i believe the positive effect it could have on the whole place could rub off and turn into a great thing.
those that dont think that will fear the oposite and good on them and rightly so

Are you seriously suggesting that those who have reservations about this appointment should stay away from the Valley because you are afraid they might start booing Powell as soon as the results start going against him? If you think there are any Charlton supporters, those with and without reservations about this appointment, who will not fully support him from the first game, and probably for the next 100 no matter what the results, you are deluded.
[cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite] is it now not allowed to express doubts or negative views? ?
''Doubts'' are one thing. But ''negative views'', predicting tears and failure before the bloke has even taken charge of a single match ? Well, of course such views are ''allowed''. This isn't China. But are they fair or reasonable? Well, I'll leave you to answer that one.
On VE day, you could have said , ''great, the war's over'' and danced in the fountains in Trafalgar Square. Or you could have stayed home and grumbled, ''nothing to celebrate, we're still going to have rationing and austerity for years to come.''
I have to say that personally I prefer the refreshing straightforwardness of this :

Oh for God's sake IA!! Can you give the constant sneering a rest? It's not about being a Parky lover or a Parky hater, it's a perfectly natural concern that this may not be the right appointment at the right time, either for the club or Chris. I'm sure everyone wants him to do do well, but it is a risky appointment. Many here may be willing to give him until the end of the next season to get us promoted, but will the board? And there's always the "Kelvin of Sevenoaks" factor to consider. If we don't start winning our home games convincingly, or god forbid we get hammered at home by Southampton or Peterborough, how long will the honeymoon period last? I know his enthusiasm can be infectious, but he's not a miracle worker.
If we allow ourselves to get too carried away, the comedown when Chris proves to be only human is going to be a lot worse than if we temper our excitement now, and allow him to surprise us with how good he turns out to be.

Let people express their doubts. They are as valid as my optimism.
