Don't be ridiculous - we need a decent manager to get us out of this league. God help if we are on a losing streak - will everyone turn against CP?
If you don't like the appointment of our new manager I'd stay off this forum for the next week (at least) if I were you cos it's gonna be the biggest Chrissy Powell Love In Ever, and that really is a FACT!!!

And if the appointment of an inexperienced manager does not work - what then?
[cite]Posted By: PaulCAFC[/cite]And if the appointment of an inexperienced manager does not work - what then?
Yes, but the so-called experienced managers we have appointed have got us relegated twice! I do not think he will do as badly as they have! Time will tell.
Look, I can see some reservations (to a point), it will be his first job, of course, BUT, every manager has that the first time around. Can you not see the positives in this appointment?
I think you are doing Chris Powell and our new board a massive disservice. He has his coaching badges, he was the PFA representative and commands the respect of every player and manager out there. Sven says he is ready to manage and will be a great manager, everyone within the game thinks the same thing (bar none). He will bring passion back into our club which will immediately restore the fans support/belief. We will have a fortress once again. I could go on but that will do.
[cite]Posted By: Mike_CAFC[/cite]Great decision, better than that Gary Johnson, or even Glenn Hoddle, get a grip, this is a proper Charlton appointment.
The fact Gary Johnson is fat has nothing to do with whether or not he'd be a good manager does it so let's not get silly. He is a good manager and did well for a time with Bristol City, establishing them in the champ. He's done well with a peterbrough side that couldn't (but granted still can't) defend this time around and is above us. He'd havebbeen a good shout IMO.
Chrissy is a god at charlton but is that enough? People are now saying he's a long term apptmnt but when parky was here it was urgent we got promoted this year. Doesn't make sense to me, I still think we need out this year and am not sure whether appointing a brand new manager will achieve that. But well see. God I hope it works out.
I think Chris Powell is a lovely guy - I've met him several times and I believe that he will eventually be a good manager. In my opinion I just do not think that the appointment is right at the minute. If he fails, I would hate to think that his reputation as a Charlton legend would be tarnished.
FFS Curbs and Gritt were scrabbling around when they started, we sometimes had to endure crap results and crap players, Curbs had, what, a 10 game losing streak in the prem? We accepted it. We accepted it because we could recognise that the bloke and the club were trying their best for us, that decisions were made honestly, and setbacks faced with grace and shrewdness.
If Chris has to sail through choppy waters he will have my support because I believe he wants what I want, success and progress for our club. I didn't feel that with good old Parky, and certainly not with Pardoo and Dowie.
So inexperienced so what? Bring on the setbacks, bring on the challenges. I don't care because for the first time in ages I feel there is a unity between fans and the manager, and given our previous high levels of tolerence I am in for the long haul.
Good luck Chris, explain but don't apologise, be your own man and get to work!
I think it is only right that there is 2 trains of thought on the sir chrissy Powell appointment I have made my view 100% clear on supporting it.
The only way it can possibly work is if he is given time and support. I would put my money on the only people that will get shite for it going belly up is the board.
The unity in the stands will be nigh on 100% because it is powelly if that can go through to the squad along with some new singings that I think we will see this week then who knows.
One thing is certain powelly will have been studious in his approach and will give more to getting it right here than any other manager interviewed and powelly wernt the only person in contention.
Reknownd through the game as a bright up and coming English coach/manager this is his time to shine. He will do his best to ensure it happens. But the club financially is stable and we need to grow again. There is a long season ahead and with momentum and energy this really could work.
It could go tits but it could go tits with anyone in charge.
There is not 1 manager mentioned who may not have fucked it up

Absolute tosh. Howe, Johnson etc. were all on a hiding to nothing - they had to get us up this year or we would have turned on them because we might as well have kept the other bloke whose name I'm already forgetting.
Powell is different - the one person who , if it takes him another season to get out of this crap division, will be given the latitude to do so by 99 per cent of us, because he's proper Charlton and he will do things the right way.
[cite]Posted By: Mike_CAFC[/cite]Great decision, better than that fat wanker Gary Johnson, or even fucking Glenn Hoddle, get a grip, this is a proper Charlton appointment.
Bet your mates are proud of your choice of words...........
Is it 'tosh' because you don't agree? So 'proper Charlton' is the answer is it? I want to get promoted and couldn't give a toss about 'proper Charlton'. Can't beleive that you would put off promotion for a year and think that it's okay.
As IA says Johnon or Howe would have been under immense pressure to get promotio this season, Powell will be afforded the leeway we may require. Any manager would have been a gamble so I'd rather gamble with Powell than anyone else. He's going to be a manager someday so why not now with us ?
Yes Paul, you may be right, but on the other hand you could be wrong, and from where most fans stand the boost of Chris is what the club needs to galvanise the fans and unify the fans to the board!
There has been a desperate feeling down there of late, and with this appointment it gives a Charlton a fresh start, or at least it feels like a new chapter for Charlton, to me and the great majority.
Liverpool appointed Kenny D who felt he was honour bound to manage the club, and despite the sentiment I am sure in time he will turn it around!
Chris is excellent with the press,a big bonus these day's , respected and well liked.
He has worked at Leicester and his dealings with the PFA he is astute enough to know what he has to do!, and I a sure he will do an outstanding job.
Rejoice the man is back!, back home where he belongs!.
Give me a manger with heart and passion, I am sure Charlton fan's will give the guy there full support.

I agree with what you are saying but think you have to take it one step further. The clubs who have been consistently successful in football have backed their managers through good and bad times. Success (and promotion can take time). Powell will get my full support for the full length of his contract regardless of results (as constant change has practically destroyed the club).
There is not one single candidate that everyone agrees to be definitely absolutely correct with no questions asked, so if we're going to take a risk take it on a guy who knows just how much it means to us surely.

Absolutely this.
Paul, I understand your reservations, but any manager could fail and I happen to think that Chris Powell is more likely than most to succeed. One of the top managers in the game -- Svenn -- gives him a glowing reference and believes he's ready. That, along with the fact that we know Chris to be an exceptional individual, is good enough for me. I just hope he doesn't get cold feet; I want his signature on the contract.
[cite]Posted By: PaulCAFC[/cite]Is it 'tosh' because you don't agree? So 'proper Charlton' is the answer is it? I want to get promoted and couldn't give a toss about 'proper Charlton'. Can't beleive that you would put off promotion for a year and think that it's okay.
I will try to explain my personal view. We started the season financially threatened, and felt that promotion was our only survival strategy. Every defeat was a nail in the coffin. New owners come in and the financial pressure eased off, and this left us looking at Parky, and remembering Northwich, and recently Walsall, Colchester and Swindon, and reflected on his style of football, and his choice of player...even if we had somehow won promotion under Parky, does anybody think the subsequent euphoria would have stopped him having to leave in the summer?
However we had to deal with the blow of Swindon, and if he didn't leave now on the back of recent results, a new regime, and the transfer window...then when?
So we have some financial stability, and need to look at the rest of the season and beyond, and given we are not going to get O'Driscoll and the like...any of the suggested names would be a gamble. I would prefer to gamble on Chris Powell than experience in the form of Wise, Johnson and any others, and I feel that this appointment is for the long term, and with stability promotion is not the imperative it was at the start of the season.
I will support Chris, warts and all, because I want to help him to achieve what I believe we both want, and I reckon it will be enjoyable doing so.
We are becoming like the Geordies and the Scousers - only wanting to support a manager that has been a past legend. King Kenny, King Kev the Messiah, Bobby Robson and demanding Alan Shearer, but not too many of these have worked out in the long run. My head goes above the parapet and no doubt someone will see this as an opportunity to throw abuse if they don't agree, but actually I don't give a flying!

Also, for all thos ewho were so sad that Parky was sacked as he was a decent bloke you should now be over the moon:
We now have one of the most decent and respected men in football as our manager now!!!
And I thought I would be shot down if i went that far, but yes: ABSOLUTELY!
Don't be ridiculous - we need a decent manager to get us out of this league. God help if we are on a losing streak - will everyone turn against CP?

even the "we hate chris powell thread" has turned into a Sir Chrissy Powell love in!

As could anyone from Fergie to Dowie mate. At least this way it's a bit of euphoria and not another drab unispiring appointment.
Management is basically pot luck and chemistry with the players and club and fans it seems so dont see any reason not to give him a go.
