The analogy I like to use is that Chris Powell has been revising for his toughest exam for over 20 years. In that time he's excelled as a player and been learning constantly from a variety of good (and bad) managers. Mourinho said that you didn't need to be a good player to be a good manager - he said it gave him more time to 'study' over the years. And I am confident that Sir Chris has been studying pretty well.
I really can't wait until Saturdays game with Plymouth. I really think the appointment of Chris Powell will not only get bums on seats and create an atmosphere as good as it was in the Prem, but I believe Chris Powell is the man to take us up this season - possibly through the play-offs.
So, two years on and I think he has done well. Not sure about some of his tactics this season and it was looking grim earlier in the season (if we were in the bottom three he would probably have gone) but he's learnt quickly and the lads kept behind him.
Can remember the excitement I felt the first time he was linked, I hadn't even considered him for a second before that. Suddenly became the only candidate who I would have been happy with!
I think this thread serves as a good reminder that no matter your feelings toward this current board, it is them who took the gamble in appointing powell, a decision which for me, an I'm sure many others, made me excited to go and watch charlton again.
I think the guy has worked a semi miracle to be honest. After picking us up from the wilderness, he led us to a league title and now sit comfortably in mid table Championship, something I honestly thought would be beyond him and us a few years back.
Bearing in mind what has gone on behind the scenes the last 9 months or so, with little to no investment, our Chris should be personally very pleased with his own achievements to date.
He has built a spirited team with the ability that perhaps reflects their current league standing but who are clearly 100% behind their manager.
Charlton Athletic FC @CAFCofficial Today marks the second anniversary of Chris Powell's appointment as manager of #cafc (MW)
Wasn't the appoinment announced but he didn't actually take charge until 17th Jan? Whatever, he's currently the 28th longest serving manager in English league football now.
I wouldn't say it was a semi miracle, but he's done an excellent job. Our 'natural level' is probably in the Championship, and we were well funded last season, when compared with the majority of clubs there, but 101 points is still an excellent achievement.
He's done a 10/10 job. A shame that some were maybe expecting us to do a 'Saints or Norwich' and got carried away. I think that's what has lead to some of the unnecessary negativity at times this season.
Curbishley was brilliant, this guy just has that extra added layer of legend about him.
He will have a stand or a statue one day, I genuinely believe that.

Same as that, I never considered Powell at all. I thought OK back him all the way, but after Daggers away (probably the worst performance I have ever seen by Charlton), I thought he might not last, but he's his own man he built his team and thank god he did.
