Ignore it, Jazzy. Made the mistake of rising to it myself earlier.

Be content that those of us who are euphoric about SCP's homecoming are going to have a damn sight more enjoyable evening than those who are shaking their heads and fretting that Slater and Jiminez have made the wrong decision in a cynical attempt to appease the fans. Or whatever it is they reckon is happening...

Celebration time. We just got our soul back...

    Yeah I will don't worry.
And yes... We got our soul back indeed! Enjoy your night :-)

Its not a matter of being a kill joy is called voiceing an opinion, and thats what these forums are about so dont cry about it please.
  • I think its great news he was brilliant as a player all the players looked up to him so now hes got the chance to do it at a managerial position also i've heard we've got two centre backs coming in tonight/tomorrow, just havent heard any names!
  • personally i would haved liked poyet as manager ,but powelly coming back is great for the fans the man is a legend and the board know that ,i really hope this works out for the club and chris powell and he can bring success back to the club and take us to new heights ,its gonna be hard to get up this season ,but if he does as good a job as manager as he did on the pitch as a player we wont be to far away .
  • Agree with dick plumb .A great bloke and more popular guy you wont meet. Personally i would have liked a more experianced man and maybe chris as number two. Charlton through and through but so was les reed.
  • Looking forward to 15 years of Chris Powell in charge, can't believe any negativity , as already said Poyet and a lot of others had no experience as managers before th start of long and successful careers.
  • [cite]Posted By: svennson[/cite] Charlton through and through but so was les reed.
    Chalk and cheese
  • [cite]Posted By: Martomoto[/cite]I'm with the sceptics on this. Personally think we needed a proven manager with a track record. Maybe I'm wrong. Hope I am! Love Chris Powell to bits and hope and pray it goes well for him and us. But I won't be doing cartwheels just yet. It is a gamble.

Most experienced managers' track records will be largely of failure.

Paul wanted Ray Wilkins, whose managerial track record is entirely of failure.

Powell is a better and more rational choice.
  • To those who feel this is punt to far, and keep going on about needing an experienced manager I say we have had three since premiership days and look where it has got us. We where never going to get a big name manager for two reasons one cost, and two because they would not come here even Howe turned us down for some little place up north, we must accept are club is not that attractive proposition for most managers. So lets get an inexperienced one in with lots to prove and oh yes and a genuine love of this club, Chris Powell.

  • This could be the right desicion.
Chris Powell is an intelligent man with a footballing brain.
My only small concern is that he may be too much of a nice bloke to be a manager.
  • is this 100 percent confirmed that he's the manager then?
  • [cite]Posted By: BigSam_Cafc[/cite]is this 100 percent confirmed that he's the manager then?

BBC say he has been offered the job and has accepted. As AFKA has posted elsewhere, they are ironing out the contract and it wont be officially announced probably until tomorrow.

Does that mean he's the manager. Not yet until all paperwork signed.

I can't see how you would get to & then survive so long at the top, and play so many games as a defender without just a little streak of nastiness running through you. I prefer to think of an iron fist in a velvet glove (so to speak) & that is a rare talent, the barkers & growlers often turn out to be one trick ponies anyway......I'm sure if he was Tim "nice but dim" character he wouldn't be where he is now,

My thoughts ( for what they are worth) is whoever we take on , people will always be able to find negative things , and yes this is a risk as he no previous managerial experience , and yes i know fans are fickle , but .... this is division 3 .... not the premiership , at what better a level to cut your teeth? i'd rather Chris dropped a few clangers in this division , learnt quickly from them and had a forgiving fanbase.

If we were in the premiership and taking Chris on now , i woukd be extremely concerned and worried , who comes in alongside Chris is important , everyone raves about Curbs ( well not all) but noone liked Mervyn Day , and would be gutted if he came back , i do feel Chris needs a bad cop type of person , to kick & rally the players when they need it.

Someone mentioned Dean Kiely or Stevie Brown , i'd be happy with either , but still feel we need an older head type person , be it curbs or Keithy P / Lenny in a senior position, if the new owners can wave that wand i'd be happy ... now lets go sign Charlie Austin , and plan a fireworks party for our next home game (Plymouth i think?) and watch the roof take off.

I got a text from a Bristol Rovers friend , who'd heard the news ,and wanted to know what i thought , i said i was very happy and felt as if i'd won the lottery!

We've got our Charlton back!! ... almost ... hurry up OS! :)
  • We should start a campaign to get Chrissy to renew his player registration for this season, just for a 5 min cameo appearance(and usual goal) in the last game to celebrate promotion.....or maybe I am getting carried away ;-)
  • Well, having exhausted the names of every available manager in the UK since Parky got the tin-tack I have to say that we probably could not have got anyone better than Chris Powell on board.

Of course this is his first job but as others have said you need to start somewhere, why not at Charlton? We were the first teams to employ Lennie or Curbs as manager - they both became legends.

I was unsure about Gary Johnson, he got sacked by Bristol City and Posh and, to me at least, looked like a bloke whose star was on the descent rather than ascent.

The board have set a high bar for Powell by effectively demanding promotion this season, lets hope that they now back him with the funds that he needs to fulfill that mission and get us back into the CCC, which is really our "traditional" division.

But most of all the fans really need to get behind Chris, not just when we are 2-0 up at home but also when we have lost four on the spin and look like we are in trouble, that's when the support and PATIENCE of the fans will really come into play.

We have no divine right to get out of this league and there are some major barriers in our way but if we use the goodwill created by Powell's arrival wisely and remain a united club then we still have a great shot at promotion.
  • surprised by this - thought we'd go for some experience after the relatively young lot who have ballsed things up over the last 5 years but it could be good - he gets my full support and i think it probably shows there was no secret agenda with the new owners but it also probably shows there ain't no secret billionaire funding this thing and if anything its like the appointment of Curbs all them years ago
  • Ormiston - you told me the other night that fairy tales don't come true - I think that this might have just happened ;-)
I agree with your post - and I think that this will bring the harmony that the club has been so lacking...

  • How many seasons was Les Ree actually involved at Charlton in a first team coach or player capacity? 3 or 4 hardly CAFC through and through.

If Powell gets us up this season then I will start believing in fairy tales myself....
  • It's strange, after the reaction on here today, I texted five of my mates and all five responses were the same, totally underwhelmed! Time will tell I suppose.

likewise - just hope the emotions are as buoyant once reality kicks in - can't help looking at this as being similar to the kenny dalglish appointment - bit of a crowd pleaser / motivational, but possibly only temporary - just a hunch and i hope it works out either way.

What happened the FIRST time Kenny took over at Liverpool....?

What happened the FIRST time Keegan took over at Newcastle....?
  • Dalglish 1st managerial role at Liverpool - 60% + win ratio over nearly 300 games

Keegan 1st managerial role at Newcastle - 54% over 250 games

Looks pretty bloody good to me - good call WSS

not saying i think its a bad appointment but seems a bit of a gamble if we're going to be entrusting him with putting together a long term, invested in plan - thats the reason why something at the back of my mind says this could just be a bit temporary - quite probably i'm wrong.

I think that is a key point. Regardless of hysteria on here, if this happens it is going to divide opinions. Personally think it is going to end in tears, but that doesnt mean I wont support him.

Have had 3 text conversations about this today and 2 of them share my fears.

This is not meant as a criticism of this site or those on it, but I sometimes think some of the posters on here think that the views held on here are representative of our whole fan base.

As for this consensus that Powell will be untouchable in terms of fan abuse, I think you are in for a rude awakening. The majority of the idiots screaming c**t at Parky looked to me to be teens, there is a good chance they wont remember the Powell era andwill see him asfair game if things go wrong.
  • I doubt that anyone of us has the slightest idea whether CP will be a success or not, but being Charlton thru and thru will have very little to do with it. If it did then we would be better off leaving 'Sir' Keith Peacock in charge.

It does raise more doubt about the supposed mystery backer and the funds available but we will see what happens with the transfer budget.

    Anyway, good luck Chrissie.

Good point. If they don't remember him as a player, they can't and won't feel the same way about him as the rest of us. Indeed, perhaps at this very moment they are echoing that infamous Standard headline and saying''Chris f*****g who?''

So if they get abusive if it doesn't quite all go according to plan, up to the rest of us to out-sing and out-shout them, I guess. I have to admit that Parkinson never pressed enough of my buttons to do that. But CP certainly does...
