[cite]Posted By: Ormiston Addick[/cite]I understand that we are playing a bit scratchily Tel but we are halfway through the season and are effectively second in the league and in the FAC 3rd Round. You can't knock that from a results point of view.
This league must be utter cack Tony, I keep hoping against hope that I'll come away from a game feeling like I've been entertained. It's little wonder that we have lost fans in droves. We seriously need some fresh impetus.
[cite]Posted By: TEL[/cite]We haven't played well chaps, Sheffield Wednesday is the only exception, where we had a complete team effort.
Not sure I agree totally, we were magnificent front to back at Peterborough, we looked the real deal and played together like a team in a way I haven't seen for years. But you're right in general, we haven't played convincingly many times this season, certainly not enough times to justify an automatic promotion place, which looking how weak this league is, now has to be the goal.
[cite]Posted By: ShootersHillGuru[/cite]I hope changes are made soon because I believe with a decent coach this current squad should be performing so so much better.
The problem with that is that his critics say his purchases are crap footballers : Benson, Abbott, Francis, Docherty, all come in for stick here, as does Liera, whom Parky has actually accepted as not being good enough for a starting place.
I think this squad has got us to about the best position it could. Its not a good enough squad, because Parky hasnt had the money.
The only player whom he couldn't get the best from is JonJo, in my opinion. These players are in the Third Division for a reason, including you, Kyel Reid.

We were really, really good. Totally tore them to pieces. Is it wrong to suggest that that's what this team are capable of and a good manager would have them playing like that far more reguarlly ?
After going to the 3 nil hiding dished out to us last time around , the fact we got something out of the game was a positive in its self. We were very lucky in my book ( 2 penalties given by half time , and an oppo player sent off by half time! i thought it was going to be our day , even though we weren't playing well or creating much , Robbie E should have been taken off at half time , Doherty is very mistake prone ( dodgy backpass led to Robbie being injured , and also sat on his derriere for one of the goals), and we have no cutting edge in the final 3rd , but..... we got a point , i really think we are ready for the transfer window , we definately look in need of a freshen up , Waggy looks off the pace at the moment , as he's gone off the boil , maybe out him on the bench for the next game , can't wait to see footie league show as not sure Benno deserved the red , even though you knew the ref was going to show it , as he looked like he'd had a rollicking at half time by the Colchester players/ management , and basically gave us nothing in the 2nd half.
Benno was pretty ineffective with Martin up front ( neither of them can hold the ball up) resulting in long balls over the top from defense which just passed possesion straight back to Colchester.
Thought both Jacko pens were cooly taken , Bennos goal was a peach ( right in front of us ) hope he doesn't get a 3 match ban.

I think that's largely true.
But what makes a third division footballer?
Most of our squad can play to a high standard. They just can't do it consistently.
They lose concentration. They lack confidence. They go and hide. They take the easy option. They seem psychologically as fragile as egg shells.
Maybe that's what differentiates the really good footballer who makes it in the higher divisions. They possess concentration and confidence and mental strength to back up their skill.
Our lot are not unskilful. I honestly think a lot of their problems are in their heads rather than in their boots.
You'd hope that a good coach could build the confidence and concentration and the other mental attributes they seem to lack. But I'm not sure that is Parky's strength.
Overall, a draw was a fair result. Some might/will disagree but we looked decent - that is to say, better than them - in the 2nd half, and they were easily better in the 1st. Their man should have been sent off; Benson probably didn't quite deserve a red though the linesman seemed very confident in his decision.
We were piss poor first half, the long balls up didn't work (totally agree with Mendonca in Asdas), we were only drawing because of the two penalties that they brought on themselves. Second half we didn't press on with our man advantage until we went a goal down; Benno took his goal superbly but did absolutely nothing for the rest of the game.
Elliot was injured - didn't really think he was at fault for anything - Francis was alright relatively, Doc was poor, Fry was poor, Dailly was good - boy can he dribble - Martin was a bit headless with some nice touches a la Kyel Reid, Racon crap, Semedo sprayed the ball decently, Jacko good because he put them in when he needed to, Abbott had marginally more presence than Benson but still did nothing. Who else... Yeah, Waggy, he was pretty anonymous.
as predicted (again nailed it) a high scoring draw
we just haven't got that killer edge to win games atm , 3 points from the last 4 games isn't good enough considering the opposition and what transpired in those matches
this is an absolute shit league only 2 teams from charlton , soton , brighton ,hudders and sheff wed will be able to make the automatics imo and i think soton are signed sealed and delivered(that will please NLA , he loves them) to take one of them spots
this makes this window a real big one for the invisible owners , this is a great chance to get out of this hell of a league
what with the tightening up of the table and the recent unconvinving displays i'm not as bullish as i was previously
10% automatic promotion 65% its the fun of the play offs and 25% i'll have to listen to another season of this after every abject wank performance "well what do you expect , they're third division footballers playing in the third division " ...............looooooooooosers
[cite]Posted By: TEL[/cite]If Colchester hadn't had the sending off, we would have been murdered. People........ they played with ten men for a big slice of the game, yet they took the game to us and took the lead. We were extremely lucky today, maybe I need to borrow Rothkos rose tinted specs, but there agin everyone around me including the four other fans I went with thought the same. Don't you think I'd love to come on here and say we were brilliant? Nothing would please me more. We haven't played well chaps, Sheffield Wednesday is the only exception, where we had a complete team effort.
you dont need Rothko's mate if thats how you saw the game i am pretty damn certain that i wouldve veiwed it the same way.
See you in the Lib Monday say 3;30 i reckon i must owe you a coldun
Tel - That's what I thought as soon as the Benno foul was committed. Lino flagging furiously was a bad sign and I've just read that when Parky asked the 4th official to have a word wiith the ref about it, he was told that his line of communication with the man in the middle wasn't working !!!! Pantomime season is still in full force ! Really hope we can get the red over ruled. As on Tues night, Benno works hard but until he has Abbott alongside , has no service/no-one to hold the ball up & play him in.
Maybe somewhat cruelly, I'm beginning to christen Martin , "Headless" . Expends 100% energy with very little positive result. And I totally agree with other posters regarding both Waggy & Reidy. Zero confidence - both completely lost their mojos. But why ????
Surely the takeover events haven't unsettled the team to this degree ? I don't want to look for excuses but can't see us going anywhere with performances akin to the one we put in this afternoon. Something must change and fast. Swindon are there for the taking and the lads need to show the fans as well as the new owners just what they're made of.Roll up your sleeves time, boys and get stuck in , PLEASE .
"Woeful. I'm embarrassed by our league position. We used up yet another get out of jail free card today. Too many of our players are so out of form it's not funny. Has Waggy just lost form or is he being used to cover the useless right back who's only skill is the occasional good cross. Jackson isn't a winger and apart from two very good pens didn't do enough. Our left back had a mare, doc had a dodgy day, Francis is non league and apart from taking his goal well, Benson was anonymous and I honestly thought Martin had gone off. Credit to Dailly for trying to drive us forwards and Abbott for his hold up play. Something has to be wrong in the dressing room because too many of them just aren't performing. Is that the same Kyel Reid who tore Southend to shreds? He looks a shadow of the man..... We have three wingers at the moment incapable of taking on a player, they all get the ball, stop turn around and lay it back.....none of them know the meaning of making space, none of them even seemed capable of playing simple one twos today. I just hope The new owners cheque has cleared, boy have they got their work cut out."
so so true - one of the best post I read today.
I was also there today & don't really know what else to say . There has to be something wrong with our training methods if the wingers (Reid, Waggy, Martin and even Sam when he was here last year) can't put a cross in whilst on the run. Waggy esp has gone so far backwards he would be unlikely to make the local sunday pub side & Ried looks dis-interested.
Not seen the goals on TV yet, but I was dead in line with Benno's disallowed goal & at the time thought he was climbing - one of those that you get sometimes , but only if your name is Shearer. As for the stick Mooney got............Not as bad as he could expect, esp as he purposly went towards our fans at one point to get a drink when he needn't do, and if he thought the abuse was bad I'd advuse him nver to play in an Old Firm Derby,Milan Derby etc where there would be a few more than 700 fans giving him stick !
[cite]Posted By: Rothko[/cite]Effort and commitment and passion for me is coming back 3 times during the game, and then have a perfectly good goal disallowed.
I agree 100% with you Rothko. Reading the above, I must watch a different game to people like TEL and Large. I thought we played well against a decent side and we would have won if the referee hadn't imagined a non-existant foul from Benson at the end. Some people really need to cheer the f*** up!!
Only seen the football league highlights so cannot say a lot.
However if on Christmas Eve you had been offered draws at Brighton and Colchester would you have taken them? I would.
Yes I know we played large parts of both matches against 10 men etc so in theory we might have done better but we've picked up two draws in two of our harder away games this season. That has to be good.
For me the problem, if there is one , is the insipid form at The Valley exemplified by the walsall game.
Let's hope they ram that comment down my throat on Monday against Swindon!
Wasn't there today, but have to say I am concerned to read we were poor judging by most posters and the marks given on the other thread.
Appreciate Parky had a limited budget in the summer, but his number 1 signing (his own words) was Doherty who looks abysmal 4 games out of 5 to me. Far to slow and off the pace and at fault for more goals than Llera ever was.
The only bloke signed with any cash (and £250K is a lot at this level) was Benson who now has 6 goals I think this season - not good enough IMO. Fry was bought in havng looked at him last season and is pretty poor, and Abbot, Warner & Francis all cost money and have contributed almost nothing. Martin was praised when we signed him but seems to be too lightweight.
JJ seems like the only exception (although I still harbour hopes that Reid will come good again).
Let's hope that if given time and money that Parky can spend well In January!
Let's hope the rumours that we are after Danny Green are true, Wagstaff was absolutely awful and has been for some time. Didn't go past his full back or put a cross in once in the whole game, he needs to be dropped!
I know Docherty had a poor game today, but as for singing 'Parky get him off' (especially the young fella and the old blonde bird he was sitting next to!) that was a disgrace, in general the Doc has been one of our most consistent defenders this season.
As already stated by others, Benson (apart from his goal), Martin, Fry and Wagstaff were awful, with Racon not too far behind. Teams can cope with one or two players being under par, but not five or six!
Colchester definately miss a trick with their catering though. Apart from one tiny burger stall in the road leading to the ground, there is no where to get anything to eat or drink. You think they would get the turnstiles open (loads waiting to get in) and start earning a few bob. Even when we did get in there was only one snack bar open that was horrendously busy all the time. They decided to open the other kiosk at 2.30, much too late by then.
Fought back 3 times and should have nicked a winner Benson got a goal Abbott looked half useful and looked like he had dropped a few pounds Jacko takes a good pen Home at 5.45
Negatives
3 of our back 4 are totally not up to it Our attacking wide players - Waggy and Reid are well out of form Inability to keep possession when we have the extra man twice in a row. Honestly felt Col U were going to score every time they got near our box in the first half
Overall satisfied with a point in a tricky fixture but cant help feeling this is shades of 3 years ago when we seemed to be in the Play Offs by default - luckily this is such a woefully shit league we might just cling on.
If there is some money in the coffers then two full backs a centre back will do for starters.
I wasn't there but I must say I don't at all like the lack of ambition in all this ''if you had offered us two points from two tough away games before Xmas, we would have taken it.''
Let's get real. If you had been offered two points from two away games in which would be awarded three pens and play most of the time against ten men, would you REALLY still have been happy to settle for dropping four pts?
If the answer is yes, then it would appear you are also happy to settle for another season of third div mediocrity. Hopefully the new owners will take a different view...
My first live game in a year, an enjoyable and exciting experience and great to meet up with Tel who chauffeured me to the game in 5 star luxury! As for the football I was shocked at just how poor we looked and perplexed as to how the hell we are second in the table. To not win against ten men Brighton was bad but to not learn by your mistakes and do the same a few days later is shocking. Waggy is a shadow of the player I saw last xmas. Racon has become the new Keith Jones, playing every pass sideways and never venturing over the halfway line. Benson is not a back to goal target man, so why the hell do we keep pumping high balls up to him, nothing ever sticks. Sorry to say Francis really was as bad as I have been reading. He does get forward well but his distribution is dreadful, I lost count of the number of careless misplaced passes. As a team we couldn't string more than 4 passes together without needlessly giving it away. We have nothing down the flanks and the midfield seems frightened to push forward. The most worrying thing for me was that despite only having ten men, Colchester looked the better team for the majority of the match. On the surface two draws against Brighton and Colchester are good results, but just as last season I fear we will end up looking back and rueing such missed opportunities and droppped points. I'm hoping this was just a bad day at the office, but I'm told this is how we have been playing for most of the season. Perhaps we just need more time to gel.
We are certainly out of form and need a good game to get it back. Hopefully that will be tomorrow but for me the way the team is balanced we need more of a physical presence up front. Good to see Sodje has recovered and was on the bench and hopefully Anyinsah will be back soon and get a run of games. With these 2 up front we will be a different team. The problem is if you have a sterile attack that don't make a nuisance of themselves or hold the ball up at this level, you encourage opponents to come on to you. I know there are a number of positions that we could strengthen but I think this would be my priority. Would also like to see a dedicated left back like a fit Youga. I think this with a more physical pacey front line and we will start turning the draws into wins.
So not necessarily a lot of money needed but if this takeover is to be a new dawn the funds have to be found for these changes. I can see a couple of players if they are the right ones turning us into automatic material - with no changes the best we can hope for is to scrape into the play offs. Still new owners and the hope is there.
'Reassured' to read that Fry has apologised. His 1st half mistakes were abject, and wasn't much better 2nd half - him and Reidy on the left flank were inept. Doc was so poor 1st half, even after his mistake had caused the Elliot injury. Quite amazing that Dailly was the only one prepared to run at the U's and fed some great balls to Reid, who actually managed to use a couple of them (when not arm-waving/whingeing). Martin promises lots, delivers little. Good to see Jacko varying his penalties. Thought the keeper was close to the 2nd one, but the big-screen replay showed otherwise. Excellent coach journey - back at Well Hall by 6.45!! Keen-eared Lifers might catch me on Charlton Live tonight :-)
You have to take your chances when they come - 2 games when we had a man advantage and we only get draws will come back to haunt us. This league is so tight those 4 points could be the difference between automatic promotion and the play-offs or, if things go badly between being in the play-offs and mid-table misery.
It could even come down to 2 points, meaning we only needed to turn one draw into a win.
I really must start being more of a glass half full kinda guy!
In truth I suspect we would have lost those two games had we played against 11 for the full 90 minutes, so maybe it's not so much four points lost but two points gained. As you said this two points could be useful at the end of the season.

Good point. And those 2 points we gained translates into 2 points lost for Brighton, and 2 points lost for Colchester.
for an hour we had the man advantage against a colchester side that had played just once in 5 weeks.lessons should have been learnt and we should have been much fresher than them after struggling against brighton despite having the extra man for 85 minutes.
i wonder what brighton or colchester's take would have been if they'd played against us having the 10 men instead of them for the majority of the games. would they think they'd missed a great opportunity to beat us or be patting themselves on their backs and just be grateful for the point?

i wonder what brighton or colchester's take would have been if they'd played against us having the 10 men instead of them for the majority of the games. would they think they'd missed a great opportunity to beat us or be patting themselves on their backs and just be grateful for the point?
