Wild Speculation Over Details Of Takeover Bid Results In Zero Facts. FACT.
  • Re-sticky this... one of the first things I want to read when i get on here, sure alot of people think the same
  • There is never any real info on here, luckily with my Old Etonian connections, as well as ruling the world we know the mystery new owners as well.
  • You know alot Mr D ... but fashion .... NO
  • Haha, sorry about the other dig, could not resist it, but when I was looking for a charlton fashion link, Rik Kwan came to mind immediately.

How is east london suiting you?
  • No inside info here just wild speculation. But I can't help but think AEG have to be somewhere in the mix. They already own three football clubs (2 US and one in Sweden) plus of course have the O2. They also have the 'Soccer Dome' (formerly the David Beckham Academy).

We must be going cheap at the moment and we're right on the doorstep. There must be opportunities for them - maybe we'd become an indoor club paying at the O2 or The Valley could become a multi-use arena for sports and concerts. If they can't get permission to do that then they could build a new multi-event outdoor stadium on the peninsula with us as a sitting tenant.

Surely they must be involved in some way?

Surely they must be involved in some way?

Why must they? We just don't know

    Because they must!
  • Trust me, it will be a very low key affair.

No huge bundles of cash to invest and just steady progress, however it will mean the club remain safe.

    Varney exclusive: Addicks fans reassured

    Wednesday, 8 December, 2010
    17:19 PM

FORMER Charlton chief executive Peter Varney believes the way ahead is clear for the consortium he is fronting to take over the club, writes Tony Hudd.

In an exclusive interview with the Kentish Times, Mr Varney stressed to all the club’s supporters that the offer agreed is a binding one.

Stopping short of disclosing the name of the group he represents, he said: “Because what has been agreed is legally binding, this means that unless issues come to light of which the investors have not been made aware of there should be new owners of the club this side of Christmas.

“The investors have already satisfied the club on its proof of funds process and its fit and proper person test, but the Football League and Charlton’s bankers also have stringent requirements that will need to be satisfied.”

And he disclosed: “A team of lawyers and accountants have been beavering away at The Valley since November 27. I think it’s been well documented that Richard Murray (the present owner) has been seeking new investment for some time and Richard deserves the respect of every Charlton supporter for continuing to underwrite the club while much needed investment was found.

“Our focus for the next few weeks is completing the legal and financial processes and, when the time is right, all the questions that supporters understandably have will be answered.” In declining to identify the investment group, he said: “Not even my wife knows that!”

Former Leeds United and Cardiff City chairman Peter Ridsdale had been linked with a buyout of the club which he quickly moved to deny. This was followed by speculation that Swiss-based financier Sebastien Sainsbury had entered into takeover talks with Mr Murray, who became the club’s sole owner when he bought out the rest of the board earlier in the season.

Charlton supporters are sure to welcome the return of Mr Varney, though in what capacity remains a mystery.

He stood down as chief executive in June 2008, citing personal reasons. Charlton have been looking for new investment since suffering relegation from the Premier League in 2007. Ian Wallis, chairman of the Bromley Addicks Independent Supporters’ Group, welcomed Mr Varney’s return. He said: “I know that all Charlton supporters will be excited by the prospect of new owners and hopefully new investment, which will enable the club to move forward.

“I hope the investment group has the best interests of the club at heart. But, with Peter Varney representing them, there is a good chance they will know all about Charlton and what the club stands for.

“I hope that we see Peter Varney back in an active role at the club because the fans trust him.” Charlton chairman Richard Murray broke the news of the takeover attempt in a statement in which he confirmed that Baton 2010 Limited had accepted an indicative and legally binding offer for the acquisition of Baton 2010, Charlton Athletic Football Company Limited and Charlton Athletic Holdings Limited from an investor group represented by Varney.

In August, Mr Murray took control of the club through Baton 2010, a company controlled by himself and his family.

Never thought of that but makes sense and fits in with the new owners being continental Europeans

  • More from Varney on SLP website. It's not been decided yet if he'll have a role if the takeover goes through.

    Varney coy on Charlton future
    Thursday, 09 December 2010

    Richard Cawley
PETER Varney has yet to discuss whether he will have a role if a mystery investor group complete its takeover of Charlton.

The Addicks former chief executive is representing the potential buyers, who do not want to reveal their identity until they have completed the due diligence process.

But Varney told the South London Press that his long-term future has not been discussed: “It’s not the most pressing item because the important thing is to get the due diligence done as quickly as possible.

“It is a discussion which will take place at the right time and this isn’t the right time.
“The due diligence is key to the whole process and everyone is focused on that. We plan to talk down the line.”

    Gazumped!

    It's Zabeel all over again...
  • It surprises me that they could get Everton for £200m or us for £20m

Now lets be sensible here - which offers the better value for money?

If they spend £15m on our stadium and £15m on our team we'd be back in the premiership with a 40k stadium and an extra £150m in their bank

Why can't these mega rich investors see anything outside the Premiership?

    *loosens clutch on the straws*
  • Henry there's nothing new in that report is there?
