Bit of a worry that we are dominating and not putting teams away. Are we going to carry on like that or is it going to click and someone gets a spanking?.

    Just got back home.

How on earth did we not win that ....???

Sleepy start, we got undone by a loooooong throw right deflected and wrong footed everybody - in came Wright-Phillips to slot home.

We never really looked like conceding, despite a decent save from Robbie - and then a long hoof which Benson chased, and nipped between 2 dithering Argyle defenders to poke the ball against the post and in. Got to say though, it was a soft goal .....big bollocking for those Argyle defenders at half time, I suspect.

Waggy off with a bruised ankle, and on came Martin playing right wing. He and Reidy really stretched Argyle, and we totally - and I mean totally dominated. Virtually one-way traffic. A defender sliced his clearance against the inside of his own post but it came out again, decent saves from their keeper - and other times we came close. But we lacked that killer instinct to turn all that possession into match winning goals.

Then we found ourselves a goal down after Reidy was fouled, the referee played on and so did the Argyle player who struck a superb shot. But the referee bottled giving the foul.

We never gave up though, and still poured forward. The Doc pushed up front, headed a floated ball from Semedo across the face of goal, and in came Benson to knock the ball home.

I was amazed at Dailley's performance!
There he is at 37 years old, not played a League match for 6 weeks, and slotting at rightback - the guy's fitness is superb, he plays with intelligence and quality 1st touch - and covered every inch of that right flank. Superb!

Make no mistake - despite our last minute equaliser, we should have put this game to bed.
    2 points dropped.
  • Jekyll and Hyde once again! Pretty average in the first half, got the ball down and played in the second and looked a very good side.

Really couldn't deal with simple balls into the box in the first half, two or three went in which caused us all sorts of problems including the one they scored from. This wasn't a problem in the second half as the only attack they had was the one they scored from, definite free kick in the build up

Thought Abbot played well, worked very hard holding the ball up. Daily looked better at RB the more the game went on and he certainly got forward more once Martyn was on the pitch. Reid & Martyn both far too good for this league. Martyn impressed today, where he didn't v Exeter, more end product amongst the jinky stuff.
  • No doubt about it Imnot Athletic, we are defo 'Jekyll and Hyde'. If we can start the first 45 like we do the second then our dominance should produce a lot more goals. Anyone believe we will give a team a good trouncing soon? Brighton?
  • Listening to the radio it sounded like Abbott got into some good positions and so did Martin. Really pleased for Benson. Reid sounded like he had their defender beat, but we didn't sound like we used him much in the second half, with most of the play coming down Martin's side. If Martin and Wagstaff can emulate Reid in the amount of crosses he throws in we could become a real threat.

Our defence is still a bit suspect. Was pleased to hear Francis not playing, sorry really not a fan of his. Was surprised to hear Dailly at right back though, odd choice Parky, but sounds like he did well. Would like to see Dailly in the middle with Fortune. We need Solly back from injury, at least he is quick and puts tackles in unlike Francis. Wonder if when Youga is back if he can play right back if Solly is still not fit?
  • got to say DOC has disappointed me this season, he is sooooooooooooooooooooo slow
  • For what it's worth, I thought that I would give some comments on the match..

I was pretty unimpressed with the first half display, along with the rest of the Charlton fans I guess as there was not one song managed as I recall.. The second half however, was very good.

We had a huge amount of possession with countless crosses. The pairing on the right of Dailly and Martin worked very well going forward. Martin showed class, a great work rate and intelligence.

It looked to me as though Jackson went AWOL for there first and later in the first half he seemed to be marking nobody when the rest of the defence had got pulled over right and I felt that he should have been getting tighter to cover. I don't think that he had a bad game just noticed those points though.

Reid looked as though he could cause problems in the first half but far too many times he beat his man and then kicked the ball too far in front of him and out of play. Much better second half and he tore them apart. He wasted too many dead balls for my liking though.

Benson worked hard and to good effect. Came back in support when needed.

I think that Semedo and Racon worked well together and overall I was happy with their play.

The centre backs did OK without being outstanding.

Abbot seemed to me to be the least effective player of the second half at least. We should have comfortably won the match with the way we dominated the second half and put so many balls into the danger area. I may be doing him a disservice but I think that it seems as though Abbot has a really problem with headers and if he had some ability in that department then we surely would have a had a couple more goals.

Abbot also seemes to have trouble keeping the ball as well as he should.

Overall a very enjoyable and encouraging display based on the second half.. We just need to do it for the whole match from now on, score more goals than we concede and we are home and dry.

I hope that it starts with Brighton next week, my first home match of the season.
  • really dont know how we didnt win that game!

i can honestly say ive never seen someone play as poorly as benson did and still score two goals, but i guess thats what we bought him for so i shaln't complain...

martin had a particularly impressive second half, and was much more effective than wagstaff had been on the right. reid of course was our best player again, turned their right sided players inside out every time. dailly was very good at right back, linked up well with martin especially and was far better than all of francis' performances put together.

as far as set pieces go, not only are we pretty inept at defending them but offensively they were crap too. jackson's corners in the first half were tragic and when reid tried in the second half they wern't much better...

a very odd feeling all in all, we should have won the game but at the same time i havnt celebrated an equaliser that much in a long while! and ive just got home to find i have my moment of fame on the charlton website, featuring in the picture in parkys post-match views!

I'm not so sure.Didn't go today but whenever i do see him he f***s me off big time.
He NEVER wants the ball.Gives our defence and attack no options. It's one of the reasons you see so many of our balls out of defence come down with snow on.And also a reason for our forward line looking like little boys lost when they get the ball.GET INVOLVED MAN!

I was listening to the commentary, heard his name mentioned lots, in particular praise for a brilliant diagonal pass in the build up to one of our goals.
  • completely disagree. I think Racon has been good in recent games, was one of our best players against dagenham (created what should have been the winning goal superbly), mk dons and brentford and has been involved and getting on the ball a lot.
  • and for reference it is also ridiculous to make too many judgements based on radio commentary, especially if its them on CAFC TV - when i last listened to that (albeit over a year ago) the commentators were awful and were getting all sorts of facts and stats etc wrong about our players and spent a large proportion of the game chatting about that stuff rather than the game.

By all means comment on players when you see them, but based on radio commentaries is daft especially when there were other lifers there. on the player ratings thread Racon has just under 7 average rating off 4 ratings which sounds lime a decent performance.
  • Racon often get's good ratings. Most people seem to remember the occasional skilfull input, rather than the whole match input.

Indeed it is silly to base on radio commentaries, but as any statistician would say 4 ratings is statistically meaningless.

The main question is why do we seem to be winning so few phases of play, where unlike 2007-2008, we have players to win matches in this division. Who set's the stall out for where the midfielf play? Semedo get's through a great deal of defensive work. Both Reid and Waggy provide threat, as does Martin. But although our wngers are incisisve, really it comes down to agressively dominate. Why is the midffield lsoing majority phases? Racon doesn't domnate or support port or midifeld, quickly speading.

The point was about commentaries as oppossed to people being there. The four who posted were indicative of those that were there and we'll see how it goes. I am not a fan of Racons, but I will judge him on the performances that I see not hear and if we are talking about the radio commentaries then selective hearing can also take place as the central midfield pair of Racon and Semedo received praise for their performance and how they had got the flanks working in the second half.
  • I dont know who you're watching but I go to nearly every game and every game Racon plays in he ALWAYS wants the ball. Has been very impressive int he last few games and has shown the form he had at the start of last season.

I'm very please to hear about todays second half performance and bring on Brighton next Saturday.
  • Bring on Brighton top of the table, this could be where our season starts

In the position Racon plays we should be seeing him doing that every 10 minutes. Not once in ninety.Look.I didn't go today but i've seen him many many times and he just don't cut it.Him and Semedo just seem to be on another wave length.Would probably go to a better side than ours and be praised to the hilt.Been waiting for him/them to do it for the best part of 2 years now and seen diddly.I've had enough.

  • WE GOT A DRAW!!!!

Fantastic... I was so sleepy I fell asleep after they wnet 2-1 up... I just told the girlfriend we lost..

great news.... We sounded like we were just about to score when they scored.... to react and get that goal is good news.. Benso might , just might start scoring...
  • The league is so pony (soton must be laughing their socks off they will finish in the top 4 despite a junk start) so a play off place is there for the taking
If our management can get us performing to the maximum of our ability for the maximum amount of time automatics aren't an impossibility
A draw was predictable and we can say how tough we are to beat, just like last year when we lost more games than leeds and norwich, what league are they in ?
0.05% automatic promotion 49.5% play offs 50% the chance for the apologists to find some new excuses for our most shameful period in our history

"Finallly, a plea to all Charlton Lifers : can we please cut out smug, self-serving phrases such as ''the Parky haters will be kicking themselves''? (I'm not going to name the poster, but you will all have read the comment higher up this thread...)

Whatever you think of Parky, the suggestion that any Charlton supporter would want our team to lose because they would prefer a different manager is beneath contempt"

Well said Incorruptible addick, a clown on here suggested that I was glad when charlton lost at some stage last season and it is the biggest insult to throw at a fellow fan who puts so much time and effort into supporting the team .......
We all want the same thing which is success for our team, just because we don't all have the same outlook as each other doesn't mean any of us wants to lose or a a certain player not to score or do well ...... Clown shoes some of you fucking clown shoes

Sage I agree Racon often wants the ball, but he goes on kamikaze-to-nowhere areas to receive the perfect pass. Semedo is not very good at offensive passes. Effectively Racon runs himself out of the game for long phases.

Semedo needs someone willing to plonk themselves right next to him so he can have a quick slide rule pass off to that player. The fact is when ball breaks down Racon is often out of position, and Semedo has to work his butt off to singularly regain ball. Occasionally the ball breaks down and Racon is rather luckily in space, that is when his undoubted ball skills come in to play. My main point is we never dominate possession, certainly not in the first half. Racon's kamikaze runs should not happen unless play is in a messy breakdown phase and we're on top, or say from a defended corner, or in the last twenty minutes when the opposition are tiring. It is great a player wants a ball, but positional discipline in the center is paramount when you have pacey offensive wingers. To me our threat is from Waggy, Martin, or Reid and then hopefuilly Anyainsah. Most champ teams can't cope with pacey wingers, let alone league one teams. Racon is a player we can well do without.
  • Disagree with all this criticism. I think 90 per cent of the time racon is available 5 yards square of semedo when hes got the ball. And is mccormack really a better option based on their respective form this season?
  • To put into context -spoke to a friend who is a Plymouth fan. They won away last week and were looking at this match to start to establish their credentials. They were the better team first half but we totally outplayed them second. They scored a wonder goal to take the lead but he thought we easily deserved to win and tipped us for automatic on the second half show. We need to find a way to continue that intensity and show it over both halves. Same with MK Dons on Tuesday - Remember they don't lose at home very often - we did look decent second half. May be some truth in what Parky is saying about team getting better as they gel and gaining consistency. Bensen now got 3 in 3 - Maybe we should trust Parky a bit more- ok only a point but long season and for me I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. From experience of being a Charlton fan, something is waiting to put a spanner in but I'm starting to get some optimism. Youga close to returning too which I think will make a huge difference. A win next week and this could be the start of something really fun.
  • Benson picked in N.O.T.W League 1 team of the week.Seems to be settling down.Augurs well for the future.
Martin's best position seems to be right winger.First Half Dagenham,Last twenty MKDons at the Valley with Reid on the left and again the same in yesterday's second half have
    coincided with our best spells.
Tough decisions with Waggy doing well but more important is that we now have more options all over the team.More so when Youga and Solly return.
    Quietly confident for Saturday.C.O.Y.R!

    what about the other 0.45%
  • Happy! Bring on Brighton! i just had to add i take back what i say about Benson before, maybe he will really start banging in the goals :-) good luck to him.
