He has a lot of very good qualities. But he needs to start having more belief in his own ability and that of his team. At times last season we were far too timid and withdrawn, with a little bit more belief, we'd have been promoted.
No he is our worst manager in recent history on paper and has got us relegated to 3rd division, didnt see fit to play a player who liverpool think is good enough and failed to get us out of it with one of the biggest wage budgets in the league. Top bloke, lovely guy but not the man to take us forward.
Oh and as for the man motivator bit.... I take it you werent at the Millwall games ?!!!
Having said that I have a lot of respect for him for hanging round and will wholehartedly support him whilst he is here and hopefully he will prove me very wrong.
like the players he has bought in on paper but too early to comment. It is one thing to bring in quality players another to organise them and be tactically astute. Too many times last season I thought he was out thought tactically by opposing managers with weaker teams. If he improves that part he could do very well...as you say well presented and articulate with a decent track record in the transfer market. Jurys out but potential is there.
The real time to judge PP will be in may 2011. Although he has not had much to spend this is now without a shadow of doubt his team. The vast majority signed for him and he chose them. The team tactics and spirit will be down to him and any excuses about dead wood players like McLeod and Moutoukil along with others will no longer be valid. This is his moment as Charlton manager. Good luck Phil.

I had been lead to believe it would be May 2009 and May 2010 previously. Good to know a new date has been set.
There's no doubt that he operates well in the transfer market, but for me he's not always managed to make the best use of the resources he's had available and has struggled tactically at times (right footed central midfielders on the left and his patented inviting-an-equaliser formation, initially perfected in the Cardiff home game, spring to mind). Maybe with more of his "own" players around things will improve.
An interesting paradox here though; the most optimistic people with the highest opinion of Parky seem to be the most forgiving of his past failures. Seems odd to me, that one.
personally i feel this season is make or break for Parky.
when he first took over you can argue that the damage had already been done and relegation was certain whoever was in charge. In his first whole season he took us to the play-offs. we could/should have done better, but many people predicated that we would do a lot worse. overall it was a decent effort.
now most of the players are now his signings... it's no longer a team that he inherited, but one he has built. So i think the jury will reach a verdict this season.

Whilst I'm inclined to agree it has to be pointed out that Liverpool haven't thought he was good enough to be played yet either.
Sadly he will never prove most wrong as they will just continually downgrade their expectations in line with his (lack of) achievement.

Controversial perhaps but Pardew when he left was quoted as saying that when he took over he thought he could arrest the slide but just couldn't. Is Pardew as bad a manager as CL would have us believe ? I in all honesty doubt that. Ask a Saints fan. Think off the field problems have been like an albatross hanging around our clubs neck effectively since Curbishley departed. Not sure PP was any more to blame for our relegation than the board. My judgement will come on Mr. Parkinson if we fail come may.
Parky basically took over from the mess Dowie/Pardew left.
Last season we were within a win of the auto's and got a points total which if we get this year could see us promoted.
This year we've basically rebuilt the squad.
I think alot of people still remember the 18 game winless run which he was a part of but really Pardew had started the rot in that run,, which is why people are still unsure of him. towards the end of that season we started playing okay despite being already relegated.
Personally I wanted him out at first but he's grown on me, people expectations last season was fighting relegation/mid table yet we challenged for automatic promotion all season. And I also believe he is the man to get us out of this division.

Nope, never said that. Just asked what people thought.
[cite]Posted By: nolly[/cite]peoples expectations were promotion last season
i remember a lot of people expecting us to get mid-table at best, only the few optimistic among thought we would go straight back up. in fact i'm sure if you dig deep enough you might find a poll.
I have to say, I have been very critical of Parky. But the players he buys impress me. He's a good judge of character and you can imagine the players respecting and liking him. Still not sure though.
"peoples expectations were promotion last season".
Everyone's? Don't mix up expectations with hopes. Plenty of argument re. his record on other threads but he very nearly got us promoted whilst still hamstrung by the Pardew / Dowie failures. Now he's got a chance with his own team let's hope we can do it this time.
His lqck of tactical knowledge is a bit exagerrated IMO. No worse than most managers at this level and probably some above. If you went through each game last season there'd be plenty of examples where he got it right, but mistakes stand out more just like they can with goalkeepers.
For over half a season he had no left winger and was forced to use Bailey, Shelvey and Wagstaff there. Later on in the season we found out he was after Reid and Jackson that summer but didn't get them. Reid then came in but was often on the bench because he wasn't 100% fit, and off the bench he offered more than most players could against tired defenders.
He often played 4-5-1 because our other strikers were Dickson, McLeod and an unfit McKenzie (mistake yes but we had to take a risk at that point in time).
This season with a balanced squad, near enough 2 players for each position (once we get a striker) Parky won't look so negative or "having no plan B" as often said. For half a season our realistic options without gambling on something completely different was to put Wagstaff on and McLeod or Dickson (or one from the start in a 4-4-2). This season we shouldn't be so predictable in that way.
Games like Millwall and Northwich were unacceptable but every manager has terrible performances at some point. Curbs had several.
He wasn't the right manager to keep us up, but without getting very lucky he's the right man at this level I think. If we have a bad season he can go at the end of his contract next summer.
I think RM may be seeing him in the same mould as Curbishley. There's still a long way to go though and still a question mark over his tactics and I would like to see us dominate games for 90 minutes, which I am confident we will do this season.
Would have been a miracle for him to keep us up 2 seasons ago, team was an asbolute shambles littered with deadwood. Last season I thought he did a really good job considering he still had a lot of the mess left over, he didn't always get it right with his tactics and substitutions, but lots of managers don't. This season will really show how good this guy is, I can see him getting us promotoed, I like his attitude, seems to have a really good work rate and seems to know a decent player when he sees one.
I like him. Have since he started. Very approachable, goes out of his way to communicate with the fans and knows exactly what the Charlton ethos is.
He works damned hard to achieve what we all want and will put his hands up if and when he underachieves.
I understand the players work well with him and from what I've seen of him, his management skills are excellent - he can motivate without having to throw the toys out of the pram and I think he is getting more and more tactically astute - which you can only get from experience.
I don't think we could ask for much more whilst we're in our current position and I'd be disappointed if RM didn't give him the time he needs to develop his own team/squad.

I've always been a fan of his. People have to remember what he's had to work with financially, and I think he's done brilliantly.

I did.
I fcuking didn't!!!
