  • Just really pleased for Solly. Sometimes I've watched him and I worry about how the more direct players will trouble him. But having said that his attitude is absolutely superb, even when he's struggling he battles like a little bugger and then often shows he has a brain altering his game. I liked Basey as well, but Solly has an attitude far superior to virtually all of our young players in recent years. For that I'd like him to succeed, and no doubt his attitude will play a part in that.
  • Cherrys fan here,
think a few of you were watchin a different game. Charlton were def stronger first half, reid looked good against our striker playing right back but second half before and after red card we bossed the game. we could have had 2 pens, one hand ball the other when your right back tripped our left winger, ref gave a free kick on the edge of the area but fairly certain it was just inside the box.

our keeper had one save to make plus a few catches tho your keeper wasnt worked enough either to be fair. according to bbc possesion was 50-50,we had more shots and you committed more fouls. thought sending off was a bit harsh in all honesty.

would you guys say u played well? we prob played to about 60% of our capabilities, pitman 10% tho
  • Hello Mr Cherry! You definitely had the edge in the last 28 minutes. It seemed after our man was sent off that you always had an extra player.

    Would you agree ....?
  • We were stronger in the half we had 11 men, yes. You also admit our keeper wasn't worked despite having 10 men.

    Welcome cherryred.

Hard to say how well we played as we have a fair smattering of new players so don't really know their full capabilities yet.

I think our take on it is that 3 points are 3 points. Charlton are renowned for never doing things the easy way and I think you came into it in the second half more because we got anxious about only having a 1 goal cushion when really it should have been 2 or 3 given the first half openings created by Reid. As a result we played deeper and deeper and only having 10 men for half an hour or so certainly didn't help.

It it's any consolation we played Wycombe on the opening day of last season and you look a better side than them to me. I can see you staying up especially if you reckon you were below par today.
  • Yep cherryred, I certainly do think we were watching different games, but welcome anyway!

First half you never had a sniff. We had all of the possession, etc, and got into some good positions only to be let down by our final ball.

Funnilly enough, yes you did have a lot more of the game in the second half and "bossed the game". However, that probably had more to do with us going down to 10 men, sitting deeper and inviting you to break us down - which you didn't do.

Two penalties? Hhmmm. I remember the "trip". Couldn't tell whether it was in or out but would've been an extremely soft one so maybe the ref was trying to even things up a bit there. Handball? Well, if someone gets the ball whacked at them from two yards away who knows what it's going to hit, but even if it was a hand I can't see how there is any deliberate intent.

In all honesty I thought you were poor. Was expecting a much tougher game and feared the worst when we went down to 10, but thought we were fairly comfortable in the end. Why oh why you kept pumping the ball up for Dailly and Doherty to head clear God only knows - the two of them dominated from start to finish.

Hate to say it but Bournemouth looked absolutely toothless. Not saying that to cause friction but you did look extremely poor. We weren't great either but we didn't have to be.
    Ref was shocking.

Good luck for the rest of the season.
  • There was no handball, but the ttrip was definitely in the box. 100%
  • I agree wacking the ball up late on didnt work, u were very organised after goin a man down and we werent incisive enough even tho we had much more possesion. thanks up the addicks for confirming the trip, i was fairly sure. as for the handball it was handball, fair enough it was from close range but the ref had given free kicks i think against both teams for very similar things so figured he should be consistent even though giving it would be pretty fortunate for us.

    i agree ref was shocking.

like i said we werent at our best but over the match as a whole i think it was an even game (stats agree) so if we were extremely poor so were u, though i thought the game was pretty good.

ur one of the favourites for promotion and we've just come up so u were expected to win. i dont think we let ourselves down, nerves got to us first half though.
  • You were pooh fella. Up until the sending off (penalty incident apart, which I thought could have gone either way) you didn't string three passes together all game. Every time you played the ball forward it was lumped up to Dailly & Docherty, who never once looked troubled. After the sending-off (which was ridiculous) you had a lot of possession - but did sod all with it.

We'll obviously have much bigger and harder games than this, but I thought we never really looked in any trouble against you even playing with ten men. FWIW, I think you'll struggle this season, unless you get some more quality in your midfield - though you looked reasonably good at centre half, and Pitman obviously has some quality up front (not that you'd know it from today - he had no service). Nice to see Arter is still absolute pants.

  • if we had loads of possesion how do u reckon we only strang no more than 3 passes together?? we wont struggle il guarentee it now, reckon we'll finish around 11th - 14th. cant judge a team on one game. if we were that poor why did u only win one nil, and dont say cos u had ten men lol. arter looked too keen to impress u guys on his return and put in a poor performance, apparently he had a knock at half time.
  • Listening in, it was amazing to be back....

You guys sounded fantastic, Reid sounded like he was tearing Bournemouth to shreds...

the last half hour was torture, and a big cheer from when we got the points...

    GREAT TO BE BACK!!!!

Are the big boys Abbott and Sodje good enough together to score the goals to get us promoted, or would it be much more preferable to have a quick finisher to play alongside one of them?

Both the big strikers worked hard yesterday but I tend to agree that as a front pairing that there is not enough mobility. Both will score goals but both of them would be more effective playing alongside a much quicker partner. I think PP is well aware of that and before the window closes I expect one or two more strikers through the door.
  • We could do with a bit of a tony cottee or michael owen....

some nippy little sh*t of a player who is nippy and faster that any L1 CB clumpers...

Working off flick ons from sodje or Abott
  • woke up out here in China a fair few hours ago now

and it felt great to wake up to 3 points in the bag

am guessing those of you waking up in the Uk over the next couple/few hours will be feeling the same way

the season is up and running.... and we got a first day win

    COYR!!!
  • Stats don't lie CherryRed

We had 100% of the goals.

    Nuff said.
  • Always nice to get a win under your belt and it lifts the pressure a bit, but I'm not getting carried away just yet. First half was something of a stroll and thought Bournmouth looked a poor side. Reidy was playing well and doing some damage and there were a few signs that things might gel eventually, as with last season though we didn't really make the dominance tell - Akpo's goal and Akpo hitting the bar were the only times we got threatening shots away, although we did get in behind a couple of times.

Second half though we were sluggish and looked a bit complacent. I actually think Semedo's sending off did us a bit of a favour as it concentated minds and woke a few people up.

Was pretty happy with the defence, Solly had a particularly good game and Dailly and Doc were organised and calm. Jackson looked a slight weak link and was a bit keen to just punt it forwards for my liking.

Up front Akpo had probably his best game at the Valley, although still managed to miss one from about 4 yards. He looked fully fit though and it showed in the way he was able to throw his weight around. Not a great deal of link up play with Abbott, but neither was is it non-existent. Saw enough from Abbott in terms of movement and anticipation to suggest he will get goals if given service. Martin looked lively too, quick and always moving with a good touch and some tricks to go with it - my worry is the catch will be he can't finish!

Midfield is what worried me. Reidy started well, but if Reid isn't doing it, who is going to? Once Bournmouth tightened up on him and he tired a bit, we had very little creativity. Waggy was poor, Semedo was Semedo and I'm a little surprised at how much praise Ally Mac is getting for yesterday - I thought he was steady but pretty unspectacular. Think McCormack will be very useful in games like Saints away, but at home to Bournmouth I'd have preferred to see Racon's sliky skills given a run out.

Overall, a few promising signs but plenty of room for improvement - which is about all I expected given the summer upheavel.
  • yeah...but...

other people know what i mean, right?

felt good waking up to know we had won, right?

    maybe it's just me
  • Good result, poor game. Maybe the team needs a while to gel, but Reid aside I don't see any options in attack, although that new fella with the blond hair looks quite useful. I thought Bournemouth were unspeakably bad in attack so I'm reserving judgement on whether our defence is any good.

  • first game of the season

3 points a clean sheet, regardless of what cherryred says his team did not have 1 shot on target other than the one that robbie saved in the 2nd half, piss poor reffing cost us a more comfortable victory..

very nice to watch the telly and read the papers with 3 points from 1 game on the board..

with fitness and proctice time together we could have a good season, i think the squad is too thin and suspension and injuries will have an impact..

but i saw more good than bad, especially how daily and doc did not miss 1 header, lack of pace at the back yes lack of know how and experience not a chance

Instantly forgettable as a match, though 3 points marks a good start.

Reid looked like he could be our most important player this season, so be prepared to see 2 players marking him in the future.

On the other flank, Wagstaff did little to suggest he will be in the starting line up in weeks to come.

Solly looked effective, as did Daily and the Doc, but pacy forwards will give them problems, I fear.

JJ looked ok, but didn't have that much to do.

Elliot looked dazzling in pink, but only had one save to make.

Semedo's sending off looked a bit harsh - he looked devastated - thought the ref was poor in equal measures. Hope we appeal the decision.

Abbott looked like he will be a handful in the future - liked the look of him. Seems like an honest player.

'Slim' Sodje performed quite well, but I don't think the Abbott/Sodje pairing is going to be the best. We still need a 'fox in th ebox' type forward.

Martin looked promising - perhaps a bit of a showboater - but could be a better long-term solution than Wagstaff.

Given the wholesale changes, I thought we did quite well overall. It will take time for the players to get a better understanding of each other. 3 points is an encouraging start, and I am quite optimistic that Parky has the foundations for a good team.

There will be sterner tests, but a win is a win.

They definitely should've had two penalties. We should've had one. There were about 8 handballs in the game and not one of them was given as a free kick or penalty. Bournemouth came on stronger after the sending off, which was no way a sending off (a continuation of a dire refereeing display), but we showed spirit and good fitness so early in the season to keep them at bay. Beforehand, they looked pretty but toothless, and to be fair there weren't that many hairy moments defending with 10 men for half an hour plus about 7 minutes added time. They will survive because I don't think Pitman will look so bemused for the entire season. I wasn't expecting them to be so physical though, thought they got away with a lot, like their number 6 cuffing solly over by the dugout touchline, and looked rather confused when the referee was (just about) blowing for clear fouls.

Focussing on us from back to front...

Elliott looked comfortable but his kicking was poor. Solly put in a battling display after being a bit out-muscled earlier on and came on massively in the second half. Doherty and Dailly didn't have a great deal to do but were solid. Jackson was hesitant at times defensively, though did make a couple of excellent sliding tackles but looked far more comfortable going forward. Wagstaff was fairly average, hard to remember him getting too involved in the game, picked the wrong ball a couple of times when the right one could've occasioned a shot on goal and was right to take him off as I think Solly needed more help. Semedo I thought looked rusty prior to the sending off which was clearly OTT. McCormack was one of my big plusses... he was given a bit of stick pre-season but thought he had a stormer, good neat passing, hard in the tackle, composed and his driving run and lay off to Reid in the build up to the goal was promising. Reid was brilliant, with one caveat... very quick, very skilful, tricky, looked fitter for having a full pre-season and so was able to make more of his runs even later on into the game... deserved to have two assists not one. However, he doesn't half like keeping the ball and at times a slightly earlier release would be more beneficial to the team though it is difficult to knock him. Akpo put in a lot of effort in, won some headers and even though he should have bagged two certainly stuck one to the doubters today with the winner and a committed performance. Abbott started brightly winning a LOT of headers but seemed to tire a bit and was the right choice to take him off in the re-shuffle.

Racon looked neat and tidy though maybe a little relaxed in the circumstances, Martin looked lively, some great touches down by the corner flag and Francis OK in short time on pitch but had the life skinned out of him once.

Full marks to Parky, picked an attacking team with two out and out wingers and two up front and fair play on the subs, they were all needed and all of them came off... he showed great maturity and vision to change his mind on the Fry sub and go back to the drawing board for five minutes. He would've got slagged for throwing him in if it didn't work so we should praise him for having another look and showing flexibility.

    Summary

Showed flashes of what we might achieve with a bit more togetherness and fitness. Should've been far more comfortable before Semedo departed, but afterwards I was very pleased to see the spirit shining through even with the number of changes to the squad and we looked comfortable. I don't think Sodje and Abbott quite work even though they did well today. A slick, pacey striker sitting on the last man's shoulder would be the perfect foil for either. 8/10.

  • Oh lord a steady central midfielder, who passes, tackles and motivates himself. I should have slept for the six years it's taken us to sign someone who can replace Parker! Steady, what a joy it'll be to watch if Mcormack lives up to that.

    Charlton 1 - 0 Bournemouth
Charlton Athletic saw off Bournemouth to get their League One campaign off to a winning start despite having to survive the last half hour with 10 men.

Akpo Sodje put the Addicks ahead on 22 minutes when he fired Kyel Reid's low cross home from six yards.

Reid then went close to doubling the lead with a long-range free-kick.

A 20-yard Liam Feeney shot was the closest Bournemouth came, despite the hosts having Jose Semedo sent off for a studs-up challenge on Michael Symes.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Charlton manager Phil Parkinson told BBC London 94.9:
"First half, it was a good performance and we created some very good openings.

"The second half, the game swung on the sending off. I think the Bournemouth player's reaction more than anything influenced the referee.

"I think we acquitted ourselves well as a team, we will get better as we go along and we will add to what we've got."

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe told BBC Radio Solent:
"It was a game of two halves. In the first-half, we were slow out of the traps.

"We improved vastly in the second-half, our mentality had changed and were on the front foot.

"It's a baptism of fire, but what better way to start the season than against the best sides and to see how far we've come."
