  • Agree with most here, Semedo's challenge looked 50/50 to me. He goes in hard but he goes for the ball not the player.

Thought today showed the makings of a decent team. No need for those excuses about not having time to gel, anyway.
  • Who was the number 19 stripped off and ready to come on before going back to the bench?

It will take this new set of players a half dozen games to get familiar enough to show us what we really have. Therefore 3 points is a great start and there were lots of positives and only a couple of negs, although Bournemouth are understandably not going to be the biggest test. Back five looked solid enough and nothing fancy which I liked. Midfield had a better balance than last season, Reid excellent, middle two dominant, Waggy not at his best and didn't threaten all game, but we have seen better from him. Liked Abbott a lot even though it looked like he could do with another few weeks of hard training. Akpo will be pushing Pawel for his place in the team, but today was a case of the top two picking themselves. Would expect Martin or A.N. Other to be PA's partner as we progress. McCormack's performance along with Solly proving that he is an able right back/midfielder were the highlights for me today and pleased to see Dailly's reaction at the final whistle (he knew that the win today was well earned). On Semedo's red, just thought he was needlessly reckless in the challenge, although on another day he might have only seen yellow.

    Though we were excellent.

Reid is (and will be) a class above most in this division.

Not Solly's greatest fan, but he was excellent today

Both the front men did well, Abbot is huge and will cause most defences problems, liked the look of Martin when he came on, also Racon looked good when called upon.

McCormack, couple of great tackles and very neat and tidy.

Back 4 all pretty solid, no problems at all.

all in all, very happy tonight....

  • Just out of interest how did Arter and Pitman play for Bournemouth?
  • [cite]Posted By: Saints fan[/cite]Just out of interest how did Arter and Pitman play for Bournemouth?

    both really bad imo
  • Arter was pants (and has stupid hair) and Pitman pretty ineffectual IMO, though he didn't have a tremendous amount of support.
  • arter was poor, got booked and was subbed at HT. TBF it was his first game in league footie.

Pitman never got a sniff other than free kicks which went nowhere.

    Was super AL after them?

  • Na, I have a Bournemouth mate who said Pitman will challenge Lambert this season and that Arter looked the business in pre-season.
  • Pitman was not fit to clean Akpo's boots let alone Lambert

    Pitman didnt have 1 shot
  • Reid was exciting first half, frusrating second. Liked McCormack, Solly motm for me. We show promise, just need a pacey striker.
  • A job well done in the end but, being the Charlton we know and love, nothing is ever achieved easily!

Reid looked capable of beating them on his own at times in the first half and I must confess to worrying that we only had one goal to show for all our dominance , mainly as a result of him. Was it Abbot who missed yet another Reid cross from a position similar to that Akpo scored? Other than that "blip" (if indeed it was Abbot) I felt Abbot made an encouraging debut. It made a pleasant change to watch a Charlton forward physically dominate for once. Akpo too put in a lot of good work and took his chance clinically. I was impressed with the way he chased lost causes given that as a big lump long sprints are not really his thing. He understandably faded towards the end when up top on his own.

As for the others Elliot did what he had to do a smart stop of a wet slippery ball down to his left in the second half probably being the highlight. Solly impressed me with his tenacity and was good in the air too given his diminutive stature. I think Waggy deserves some credit though for helping Solly out by doubling up. The only downside being that he did not show as much as one might expect going forward. It didn't matter today with Reidy on fire but another week it might.

Jackson impressed me given that left back is not his preferred position and linked excellently with Reid at times. In the absence of Semedo for 3 matches I'd seriously consider playing Fry as left back and push Jacko up into midfield. The two old soldiers Doc and Dailly played their part. Christian is a massive presence and calming influence with his vast experience.

I thought Semedo was unlucky to go given that he won the ball although when I asked my daughter why she thought he went she said straight away studs up which appears to have been the case. A lot of refs would have given a yellow rather than a straight red and I hope we don't live to rue the 3 games Jose misses. McCormack seemed competent at this level. He got about the park, put a foot in and produced the odd decent pass. Again an encouraging start.

As for the subs not enough time to form an opinion really. Martin's little cameo was entertaining but too early to judge how he will react to the nitty gritty of third division football over a full match. Francis looks as if he offers physical presence which is important at this level. Racon was Racon. One lovely piece of skill, disappear. Maybe only making the bench rather than the X1 will spur him on to greater consistency.

My MOM Reid. He was streets above the rest at times in that first half.

So pleased for Chris Solly - he's had stick on CL in the past. The problem, as it has been for the last few seasons, is that our strikers don't look like scoring much.
  • Bournemouth manager says in interview on BBC that he thought the sending off was harsh
  • [cite]Posted By: LenGlover[/cite] Was it Abbot who missed yet another Reid cross from a position similar to that Akpo scored?

It was Akpo, probably just getting in a practice for the one he scored. Easier to score the first one, but thankfully we only needed the one he managed to put away.
  • Well at 3pm we were 6th in the table.

    At 5pm..........we were 9th!

    Parky OUT!
  • Sounds like it should have been more comfortable than it was but 1-0 and plenty of time to improve
Atm I think we are 2% automatic promotion, 48% play offs and 50% we're back 'ere next year
early days yet and I haven't cast my expert eye on them all yet !
